BART, Tully’s Coffee, TransFair USA Team Up to Thank Earth-Conscious Commuters on Earth Day
$500,000 Fair Trade Certified™ coffee giveaway warms hearts while reducing global warming

Oakland, CA. April 17, 2008 – BART knows that its riders are among the most progressive in the country, which is why the Bay Area’s leading public transportation network has teamed up with leading specialty coffee purveyor Tully’s Coffee to thank BART riders on Earth Day.

Next Tuesday, April 22, 60 volunteers from TransFair USA and local grassroots liaisons will hand out vouchers for free Fair Trade Certified™ and Organic coffee from Tully’s at six BART stations to morning commuters. With Tully’s cafes within close proximity to each of these stations, commuters will have an easy and Earth-friendly way to enjoy Earth Day by redeeming this coupon for a free cup of drip coffee or latte made exclusively with Fair Trade Certified and Organic espresso – served in a compostable cup. In addition, commuters can pick up a free half pound when they purchase a half pound of coffee beans from Tully’s.

“The Earth Day ‘Thank You’ event gives BART a chance to thank our riders for doing their part to protect the planet,” BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger said. “Each day, the average rider prevents 23 pounds of harmful pollutants from spewing into our air, and riding BART is the most effective choice you can make to fight global warming–10 times the effect of replacing five light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. Thanks to Tully’s generosity and TransFair USA’s volunteers, we have another opportunity to express our appreciation to our passengers. What an ideal way to celebrate Earth Day!”

TransFair USA & Fair Trade Coalition volunteers will hand out coupons to morning commuters between 6 to9 a.m. at Montgomery Street, Embarcadero, Powell Street, Civic Center, Oakland City Center/12th Street and Downtown Berkeley stations. This is the second of a quarterly giveaway, in a sustainability partnership between BART, Tully’s Coffee and TransFair USA.

Tully’s: A Sustainable Cup of Brew
Tully’s Coffee is among more than 700 national restaurants and cafés that offer Fair Trade Certified products, meaning farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America are paid fair prices for their products and crops are raised with environmentally sustainable agriculture techniques.

“Our first event with BART and TransFair USA was a huge success and we couldn’t be happier with the customer feedback,” said Martin Walker, VP of Marketing and Merchandising for Tully’s Coffee. “We are excited to continue our three-way alliance by celebrating Earth Day with these outstanding partners.”

“Earth Day is all about spreading the word on better ways to live sustainably,” said TransFair USA’s President and CEO, Paul Rice. “Rewarding BART riders with Fair Trade Certified Tully’s coffee makes perfect sense: commuters get to enjoy their morning cup, and with that much increased awareness about Fair Trade Certified, we can help enable more sustainable lives for farmers who grow the coffee.”

BART/Tully’s Fair Trade Certified Coffee Giveaway: Green Facts on the triple benefit of 50,000 BART commuters drinking Fair Trade Certified coffee from Tully’s compostable cups:

50,000 BART riders prevent 1,150,000 pounds of greenhouse gases and harmful air pollutants from emitting into the atmosphere each day.
50,000 compostable coffee cups reduce petrochemical plastic use by 12,500 pounds.
50,000 cups of Fair Trade Certified coffee help provide approximately $16,000 of additional income to small-scale farmers, supporting more sustainable livelihoods.
