The Coast Guard Cautions Boaters of High Winds in Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO - The Coast Guard, along with its partners agencies Alameda County Sheriff Department, Marin County Sheriff and Fire Departments, and Mission City Police Department Marine Unit, has responded to 16 distress cases involving recreational boaters in the Bay Area, today. The Coast Guard warns recreational boaters and water sports enthusiasts to use caution while on the water this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory and Gale Warnings in the Bay Area, and is reporting gusts up to 45 knots in some places. For more information, visit http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/.

Boaters are reminded to always carry properly fitting, Coast Guard approved life jackets while enjoying time on the water, and to always have a float plan in place with friends or family prior to getting underway. The boating public is encouraged to ensure all navigation and safety equipment is in proper working condition, and to take a boating safety course to learn more about operating safely on the Bay.

”With the challenging weather forecasted for the Bay Area, the boating public is encouraged to take special precautions to avoid putting themselves or their families in a dangerous situation,” said Commander Pat DeQuattro, Chief of Response Department for Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.
