San Francisco District One Supervisor Race - Meet the Candidates

Monday, October 6th, 2008

There’s less than a month left until the big 2008 election in San Francisco, so it’s not too early to think about the Supervisor race in District One, aka The Richmond. Here are the candidates to replace Supervisor Jake McGoldrick:

Nicholas Belloni - Independent Film & TV Producer
Sherman D’Silva
George Flamik
Fidel Gakuba
Jason Jungreis
Brian J. Larkin
Sue Lee - Planning Commissioner
Eric Mar - School Board Member
Alicia Wang - Teacher

This was the scene inside Star of the Sea Church at tonight’s debate hosted by the somewhat religulous San Francisco Organizing Project (SFOP). For some reason, the front runners were all grouped stage left. They are Sue Lee, Eric Mar, and dark horse Alicia “Free Hugs” Wang - take your pick:

There was a good turnout of 150 souls or so, complete with a Saguaro cactus from candidate Brian Larkin.

Some say that district elections favor one candidate or another. Oh well.

What’s that - you want to hear what everybody has to say? You want to meet the candidates? Here you go.

Enjoy.

Tom Perkins’ Big Boat Gets into a Little Accident

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Daniel Steel’s fifth husband, Tom Perkins, might just have more boat than he can handle, judging by the fact that it’s been listed for sale already.

recent collision with Nordic 40 footer Stand-By (see damage here) near the Bay Bridge won’t help resale value. The main lower topsail (note gaping hole here) (I’ll take the mizzen topgallant to block, Peter) will never be the same, anyway.

Poor Tom!

The Mother of All Exhibitions - King Tut at the de Young in 2009!

Monday, October 6th, 2008

The Mother of All Museum Exhibitions is coming to Golden Gate Park’s de Young Museum in June 2009. It’s Tutankhamun! It’s on! That’s right, the King of Bling is coming back to San Francisco for the first time in 30 years.

Well, maybe not King Tut himself:

“Tutankhamun’s mummy and the inner sarcophagus are still located in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The outer sarcophagi and shrines are at the Cairo Museum. Neither the mummy nor any of the sarcophagi have ever traveled.”

But this show, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, is going to be way better than The Treasures of Tutankhamun, which is what what people were able to see the last go around three decades ago.

Check out this gorgeous gorget. Wouldn’t you like to hang it on your chest?  Bling bling, baby. Click to expand:

O.K., people, now brace yourselves. Tut is going to cost you some coin. Yes, even if you’re already a member. But this show might be what it takes for you to join the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (800 777-9996) As they say, membership has its privileges and you might appreciate that when all the madding crowds surround you.

Here’s what you need to know now. The exhibition opens on June 27, 2009 and runs through March 28, 2010. And the ‘zeum will be open until 9:00 PM every day for months just to accomodate all the expected people. So, you’re going to need to get your tickets early for best results. They’ll be available sometime near the begining of 2009.

If you want to know the moment tickets go on sale, then sign up for the e-newsletter why don’t you?

See you there in 2009!

LoveFest Love Parade 2008 - San Francisco Hearts You

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Last weekend was time, once again, for reason #17 on the list of Why They Hate Us, LoveFest 2008:

“While Americans are struggling with an economic meltdown, ruthless hurricane season and political uncertainty of our future, San Francisco LoveFest will provide some much needed love. San Francisco’s biggest street party kicks off Saturday, October 4th at San Francisco LoveFest: A Dance Music Parade and Festival. The parade featuring 28 floats will start at San Francisco’s 2nd and Market Streets and continue all the way to Civic Center Plaza for a giant outdoor dance club with the world’s top DJs to celebrate at this free all-ages event.”

Ahora mas que nunca:

“Now more than ever we need to take over the streets and City Hall to express and share the values of culture, peace, love, unity, and respect,” said Joshua Smith, SF LoveFest founding board member. “There is no better time for an event of this scale and intention. Our community needs to come together, enjoy life and hold onto the good things.”

O.K. then.
