OMG. MUNI’s free tonight! The latest update, as of an hour ago:

Free service on New Year’s Eve (details below)
Additional service: Metro Subway, L-Owl, N-Owl, 5, 14, 22, 24, 38, 90, 91
Possible rail line re-routes: F, California cable car
Possible bus route re-routes: 1, 6, 9X, 12, 14, 21, 24, 31, 35, 38, 45, 91
Dates: Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, through early Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009

On December 31, New Year’s Eve:

  • Muni travel is free from 8:00 pm New Year’s Eve until 6:00 am New Year’s Day.
  • Riders are encouraged to use the Metro to get into and out of the Downtown area.
  • Extra Metro shuttle service is being provided between West Portal andCaltrain stations from 7:00 pm until 4:00 am, to connect with last BART trains to the East Bay. (Last Metro train from West Portal to Downtown about 3:15 am.)
  • J, K, L, M, and N Metro lines are operating on their regular weekday schedule (until shortly before 1 am).
  • Most Owl lines are running every 15 minutes (5, 14, 22, 24, 38, 90, 91, L, N). There is no change to 108 Owl service.
  • Extra Owl service is subject to change, based on operating conditions.
  • The San Francisco 3-1-1 Customer Service Center,is open all night, as ususal, for travel assistance.
  • The F-Market and Wharves line is using buses all evening.
  • No re-routes are scheduled. Contigency re-routes are shown following “Other Transit Systems”.

No re-routes are scheduled. If re-routes are required, vehicles will re-route as follows:

Re-routes in the various neighborhoods will take place only if necessary:

  • Embarcadero area:
    • 1-CALIFORNIA would not serve stops east of Davis.
    • Californa Cable Carwould not serve stops east of Kearny.
  • North Beach. If Broadway & Columbus closes :
    • 12-FOLSOM/PACIFIC toward Cesar Chavez would run via Clay between Powell and Battery.
    • 9X-BAYSHORE EXPRESS and 91-OWLwould not serve stops between Kearny & Jackson through Columbus & Stockton.
  • Cow Hollow (Union Street):
    • 45-UNION-STOCKTONwould not serve stops on Union west of Van Ness.
  • The Castro:
    • 24-DIVISADERO would not serve the stop at Castro & Market.
    • 35-EUREKA would stop on Market between Douglass and Eureka, and would miss all stops on Castro. Board on Eureka.
