Everybody knows about the bison of Golden Gate Park, but history of the Bear Pit, which used to be near the Childrens Playground(?), is not as well-known. Big Grizzlies (like Monarch Bear, the “biggest in captivity“) and Black Bears were kept in what looks to be a very small area.
These days, the Grizzly Bears of San Francisco live in what appears to be a vastly superior environment.
But you make the call – check out the Hearst Grizzly Gulch at the 80 year old San Francisco Zoo when you can. Watch the orphan sister bears from Montana and see how much they frolic.
