Well, you can read the press release below. Or better yet, check out the refreshingly frank Wikipedia entry on Swiss International Air Lines and/or the prior SwissAir, which followed the Mckinsey & Company’s “Hunter Strategy” for too long. (You can read about that fiasco in B-School.)
Billions of bailout dollars (or whatever) later, the Swiss sort of have a vibrant national carrier again.
Anyway, if you’re flying to Switzerland, this will do. The Airbus A340 jumbo is nobody’s idea of a successful design (what with its surplus of fuel-sucking engines in this Big Twin Era), but it’ll get you there and back, six days a week, as a pampered guest of SWISS CEO Harry Hohmeister (his real name, srsly).
Imagine this bird at SFO:
And British Airways isn’t pleased about this development at all, but oh well.
All the deets after the jump.
Swiss International Air Lines Ltd. Announces New Non-Stop Service From San Francisco to Zurich
SWISS announces today new long-haul service between San Francisco and Zurich six times a week offering Bay Area passengers the opportunity to enjoy Swiss hospitality and feel right at home when flying to Switzerland and beyond to any of its 76 worldwide destinations.
The new service will begin on June 2, 2010 with an Airbus 340 complete with the SWISS First and SWISS Business cabins plus a more comfortable SWISS economy experience. The schedule is as follows:
San Francisco-Zurich (SFO-ZRH) LX 39 dep. 7:25 p.m. arr 3:40 p.m. the following day
Zurich-San Francisco (ZRH-SFO) LX 38 dep. 1:15 p.m. arr 4:30 p.m.
Rigorous cost management and focused endeavours to enhance efficiency, make SWISS one of the few air carriers able to further expand its network in 2010. As a result, the new San Francisco-Zurich service brings one of North America’s most important business and leisure destinations into the SWISS network; and with San Francisco growing steadily in importance for Swiss-based companies, the new service will further enhance Switzerland’s appeal as a business location.
“By adding San Francisco to our network, we are meeting a strong demand that we have heard and felt from many major companies and large numbers of leisure-travel customers,” said SWISS CEO Harry Hohmeister. “Actions like this, show just how much drive and dynamism a healthy and competitive SWISS can provide for Switzerland, as a place to do business and as a tourist destination.”
The Honorable Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco applauded the news about the new service. “Congratulations to Swiss International Air Lines on new premium non-stop service from Zurich. This route will further cement the ties between our two Sister Cities and provide passengers with a superior travel option to Zurich and beyond.”
Dedicated to providing quality service in every detail and personal care, SWISS is committed to delivering true Swiss hospitality to all passengers who are made to feel at home. The new service includes SWISS First, SWISS Business and SWISS Economy. The new SWISS Business offers passengers innovative air seat cushions that can be individually adjusted for comfort levels. The new seat is fully reclinable, with a seat pitch of 45″, seat length of 79″ and a seat width of 20.5″.
San Francisco makes the eighth gateway served by SWISS in North America. SWISS offers convenient service to Switzerland from Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark, and Montreal. The new San Francisco service into Zurich flies into the heart of Europe, from where SWISS serves all major European cities with minimum connecting times.
