How Wude! Rebel Cyclists Try to Hector Pedestrians Off of Panhandle Bike Path

There are two ways to go east and west in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle:

The bike path (or multi-use trail or whatever) abutting Fell Street; or

The pedestrian-only path abutting Oak Street.

Seems that a group of cyclists thinks that the path near Fell should be bicycles-only, based upon all the new scribblings that just showed up.

See?

Is this kind of thing the reason why some say, “No one dares walk in the Panhandle any more?”

Can’t we all get along?

If most of the pedestrians on the Panhandle path just kept to the right of the path (you know, like traffic) instead of meandering on the yellow line, perhaps there would be less contention about it. =)

    Just sayin’.

I passed by a couple peds a couple days ago – one asked the other if they were supposed to be on the right or in the muddle of the trail. Oh well.

OTOH, you have insane roadies pumping hard downhill hellbent for election…

I’m more concerned about kids on bikes and scooters. Many cyclists seem to have as much disdain for them as for pedestrians.

Maybe we could hire the homeless camping in the Panhandle playground to act as traffic cops. But that might interfere with their “lifestyle choice”.

Yeah, it would be nice if we could all get along and use the multi-use path together. Too bad so many of the pedestrians on that path are clueless.

We have a similar pair of paths in Berkeley/Albany along the BART tracks. Those are explicitly, officially signed as one for bikes only and the other for peds only. About 99.5% of the peds use the bike path anyway. So, I kind of doubt that someone’s chalk scrawls on the panhandle path will have any effect. The peds won’t even notice.

  5. Peter says:

    They won’t notice because it’s a multi-use path, not a bike path.

I’ll still call it the bike path cause that’s what it is, but it’s clearly marked as being for bikes AND peds (on the short green post in the background of the photo). Peds can use most bike paths of course, excepting for the wrong side of the Golden Gate Bridge, depending on time of day, week.
