Well, now it looks like this:
It’s the Jay, named for a surfer who passed away in 2001. (You’ll learn more about Jay when Sean Penn gets around to making a movie about him.)
But don’t think that this is “the last word” on this matter or anything:
“Keir Beadling, the chief executive of Mavericks Surf Ventures, said the permit decision was disappointing but was not the last word on this season’s contest.”The reality,” he said, “is that no one else could attempt to produce a contest at Mavericks without running afoul of MSV’s rights associated with the company’s intellectual property, and with its relationships with sponsors, vendor partners and various agencies.”
Ooh, sounds scary. Srsly.
