Of course, the eastern span, the one they’re still working on decades after the Big One of 1989, will have an ornamental tower. Oh well.

The new bridge’s tower is functional as well — it is in fact the anchor of the self anchored suspension span.

A freeway on stilts on pilings driven into the hard mud down below would have been fine.
