They support big, expensive public works projects regardless of the merits of individual projects because they create jobs, especially for union workers, a crucial part of the Democratic Party's base. High-speed rail is another example. It's an even bigger boondoggle than the Central Subway. And I say this as a Democrat myself. If the Republicans weren't so much worse on all the other issues, I'd switch parties. City Hall is ruled by what I call Development Democrats. I still believe this cash cow for the ruling class will transform what's left of an authentic Chinatown neighborhood into a Disneyfied caricature of itself. If the goal is to improve mobility between Chinatown and Downtown-- I've always believed that people-moving sidewalks through the strategic Stockton Street Tunnel would be the sweet solution. Silly me.

I still believe this cash cow for the ruling class will transform what’s left of an authentic Chinatown neighborhood into a Disneyfied caricature of itself.
