Remember, Cyclists Alway Have the Right Of Way.

Oh wait a second, I just made that up. It’s not correct. I’ll fix my error by telling you I was wrong.

What I meant to say was Pedestrians Always Have the Right Of Way.

Oh wait, that’s wrong as well.

The SFBC knows by now that their statement is wrong but they still have it up on their website?

Yep.

What they should have done is had a lawyer do their bikelaw page.

Oh well.

  1. Mike says:

“Pedestrians always have the right of way” may not be 100% correct, but the point isn’t pedantry… for useful purposes, especially for a cyclist, it is 100% correct. Yield to pedestrians basically at all times.

I don’t see why the SFBC should have to muddle their message just to accommodate the legal reality that every now and then a pedestrian is actually in the wrong.

  2. sfcitizen says:

Why doesn’t the SFBC say what it means?

If they want to say, ” Yield to pedestrians basically at all times” then why don’t they say that? That would be their advice. It aint bikelaw or CAlaw though.

The page they have is called “bikelaw” BTW.

“I don’t see why the SFBC should have to muddle their message just to accommodate the legal reality…” Oh, the burden of accommodating reality!

Was Sutchi Hui “in the wrong?” Dionette Chenery?

“Every now and then?” Most of the ped deaths on the streets of SF last year was the fault of the pedestrians themselves. Not all, but most. Telling pedestrians that they have they “always have the right of way” is wrong wrong wrong.

    That’s “pedantry,” huh?
