Are “Rear Red Lights” Required for Bicycles at Night in California? No, Not At All – So Why This SFMTA Poster?

What does this poster mean to you? Does it mean that its creator is saying that rear lights are required by law?

Yes it does.

But are rear lights required by law IRL?

No, they are not.

Does the SFMTA know this? IDK.

Hey, who is more likely to kill bike riders in San Francisco? Is it all the car drivers in the world or is it the several thousands of drivers employed or regulated by the SFMTA? Again, IDK, but it’s a reasonable question.

Hey SFMTA! Why don’t you have a lawyer look at your posters before you release them?

Just asking.

I think reflectors are a good idea, not sure if they are required by law. But my real question is why do you need to use abbreviations like “IDK” and “IRL” on a blog post? Otherwise I like your blog.
