OMG, It’s Carmageddon! Forget About Parking In Front of Your House Anymore If the SFMTA’s “Car Share Vehicle” Program Comes to Your Block

It’s a mere formality now, this plan from July 11th, 2014 to give a metric ton of street parking spaces over to ZipCar and the like.

Hey look, even spaces on the side of the block where I live.

Like, I don’t care, but man the NIMBY’s are not going to be happy with this, NOT ONE BIT! If the spaces get used too much, it’ll piss off the NIMBYs. But if the spaces get used not that much, it will also piss off the NIMBYs.

What’s next, spaces reserved for Avis and Hertz cars? Perhaps. Why not?

If you stop in one of these spaces in your private car, you risk a ticket. If you go and actually park in one of these spaces, you know, like you’ve been doing the past two decades, well, you’re going to get towed, with extreme prejudice. And that will run you $500-$1000. So, respect!

As with every other program SFGov does, some of us will win and some of us will lose.

Oh well.

Oh, hey, what about street cleaning? Is ZipCar going to get a pass on this or will they send somebody out to move the cars for two hours (ala Kramer in Seinfeld) or will something else occur? I know not.

I’ll tell you, I don’t know how our Austrian “neighbors” make fancy “eco-forward” rayon, but here’s how you make regular rayon. Enjoy:

  • Cellulose: Production begins with processed cellulose
  • Immersion: The cellulose is dissolved in caustic soda: (C6H10O5)n + nNaOH → (C6H9O4ONa)n + nH2O
  • Pressing: The solution is then pressed between rollers to remove excess liquid
  • White Crumb: The pressed sheets are crumbled or shredded to produce what is known as “white crumb”
  • Aging: The “white crumb” is aged through exposure to oxygen
  • Xanthation: The aged “white crumb” is mixed with carbon disulfide in a process known as Xanthation, the aged alkali cellulose crumbs are placed in vats and are allowed to react with carbon disulfide under controlled temperature (20 to 30 °C) to form cellulose xanthate: (C6H9O4ONa)n + nCS2 → (C6H9O4O-SC-SNa)n
  • Yellow Crumb: Xanthation changes the chemical makeup of the cellulose mixture and the resulting product is now called “yellow crumb”
  • Viscose: The “yellow crumb” is dissolved in a caustic solution to form viscose
  • Ripening: The viscose is set to stand for a period of time, allowing it to ripen: (C6H9O4O-SC-SNa)n + nH2O → (C6H10O5)n + nCS2 + nNaOH
  • Filtering: After ripening, the viscose is filtered to remove any undissolved particles
  • Degassing: Any bubbles of air are pressed from the viscose in a degassing process
  • Extruding: The viscose solution is extruded through a spinneret, which resembles a shower head with many small holes
  • Acid Bath: As the viscose exits the spinneret, it lands in a bath of sulfuric acid, resulting in the formation of rayon filaments: (C6H9O4O-SC-SNa)n + ½nH2SO4 → (C6H10O5)n + nCS2 + ½nNa2SO4

Be my guest if you have the time to watch any of them. I’m sure there are old scenes of the Bay Area I’d like to see, but somebody will need to go through and pick out the good parts and string them together afore I’ll watch any part of any TSOSF rerun, sorry.

Here’s an old Chrysler van. Can you see the rear extension they simply tacked on to the end of the thing? See how they left the wheels in the same place as on the shorter 12-passenger version?

The Ford design was to lengthen the body over the same frame as smaller vehicles. GM  increased the wheelbase. Safety experts feel the GM approach is the safer design.


Passenger vans (Econoline Wagons/Club Wagons) could seat between two and 12 passengers, depending on the number of seats installed; standard-length wagons typically held two bench seats behind the driver. In 1978, a 15-passenger “Super Wagon” was introduced on the same wheelbase as the standard-length van, using a body extension added to the rear of the vehicle.

At the very least, you should load up people from the front on these rigs.
