  1. Sam Foster says:

    Those are both TERRIBLE!

  2. SF says:

What are you talking about? The first one’s awesome!

  3. CO says:

Yeah both of those are better than the current. Not to mention you barely see the current one anywhere in the city so it would be less like replacing something that you use (a cheap, but effective vacuum cleaner) and more like replacing appliance so God-awful you never use it with someone good enough that you might even enjoy using it.

  4. sfcitizen says:

Well, that’s the argument, like ppl are rallying around Chicago’s new-style flag and you see it everywhere.

But if I were going to ask our Mayor and Board of Supes for a favor, which is what this effort is basically doing, it wouldn’t be to change our flag…

In my experience, I see it all over the place. In my experience, I can ID it from far far away.

  5. Fond former resident says:

Roman Mars is right (and what a great TED talk), and both those designs are way better than the current flag (especially the one up top).

  6. sfcitizen says:

So this is what’s wrong with SFGov? Please oh please Board of Supervisors placate us with this? We’re the most corrupt big city west of Chicago, which, ironically, gets an A+ in civics from “Roman” “Mars.”

Hey, what about the flag of the Third Reich – I’ll bet Roman Mars 1933 would have pleaded with Hitler to give that flag a boost, since it meets Roman Marsese’s lofty standards…

  7. John says:

The current San Francisco city/county flag is quite dreadful.
The second option is good certainly better than the current and adheres more closer to the original design. However if it was between these two I’d go for the first one. The point is that these might not be the only options, it would be a design contest. I’m sure the bay area has a lot of artists that could design a great flag for the contest.
Regarding the third Reich flag. Design wise it is a great flag. The fact that your bringing up that flag as an argument supports the importance flags, at least national flags, can have. The negativity associated with that flag isn’t due to the flag being hideous it’s due to what that flag represented in the past. That flag is extremely iconic and now it is instantly recognizable, conjuring up all of the atrocious committed by the bearers of it.

  8. sfcitizen says:

Fair enough. The reaction in Frisco was generally negative though, in 2015. We’ll see what 2016 brings.

If these flag ppl were back in WWII, they’d be saying how the flag would make the Reich better, prolly.

IMO, we should hold the contest first and then put the winner up against the original. Unless the new flag was just a redoing of the yellow boid, the new flag design would lose out, so that’s that…

  9. Jose Guardiola says:

Frisco? Did you really say ‘Frisco’? Yikes. Talk about exposing yourself as an outsider. Well I love San Francisco too and I absolutely LOVE the first flag design above. It is gorgeous and is as elegant as the City itself. Please, please, please adopt it. The current one is hideous!

  10. sfcitizen says:

No no, the tech company and the podcast dude, they’re the outsiders. They aren’t based in Frisco. Never were.

  11. Jaden Saied says:

Those who say that these are “terrible,” either A, have never seen the current San Francisco flag, or B, know nothing about design. Also the first one is awesome.

  12. sfcitizen says:

Not sure where the “terrible” quote comes from.

    The existing flag is fine.

If Autodesk wants to submit a flag idea or hold a contest, it’s free to do so. But what they’re doing now is trashing the current flag in favor of some unknown “better” flag in order to promote Autodesk.

Anyway, I don’t know which promised “government official” would want to get involved in this process. That was back in 2015 and now it’s 2016 so I suppose this effort has stalled…

  13. David says:

These new flag proposals are great. Actually has some pride to it. The reaction I’ve heard from a lot of people has been super enthusiastic to the first one.

Can you be more specific with what you don’t like about it? Please critique the flag itself, not just ad hominems.

  14. sfcitizen says:

If this whole thing is (was?) just a mental exercise of what the flag of SF should look like, well then have at it. But it looked like this was a serious effort last year and I was campaigning against it. Is this older post more specific?

    http://sfcitizen.com/blog/2016/06/08/north-bay-techies-and-an-east-bay-podcaster-want-us-to-abandon-friscos-flag-heres-their-progress-the-past-year/

In any event, my beef is about this effort to change the flag, not about any particular design. Some ppl were asking me what the new flag could look like, so I dug up what I could find from the web. The burden isn’t on me to say why I don’t like any particular proposal. The burden is on “Roman Mars” and Autodesk, IMO – they’re the ones who have the work to do. IMO.

If you want ad hominem, here it is:
