This is what San Francisco looks like for the year-end holidays of 2011. Now here’s what things looked like in years past:

First, he was all like this:

Then he was all like this:

Then it’s all like this. The view from Chinatown of Embarcadero Center Buildings One, Two, Three, Four, and West (lower right – EW is the black sheep of the EC Family) along with the Emerald City look of 505 Montgomery.

Gumps in Union Square is Already All Ready for Christmas 2011 – Everything’s Eurocentric, Except for Buddha-Claus

Don’t miss the giant Buddha* – he’s in the mix as well:

Merry Christmas!

* Now, you think, and I’m srsly you guys, you think maybe at some point Gumps could make a replica of the Buddha and then send the original back to Northern China whence it came? Just asking, Gump-bro. I know you have custody of it currently, from Agents of Fortune, though Accident of History, but is that the way it will always be?

“A Qing Dynasty gilded wood Buddha, carved for a summer palace in Northern China, is located in the store. It was carved in the Northern Manchurian Province of Jehol, the summer capital of the Ch’ing Emperors in the early 19th Century. The piece, the largest of its kind outside a museum, is the only item in the store that is not for sale.”

China, China, calling out to history
Is that the way it will always be?

They used to stop at 5th Street, but now they don’t – they go farther this year.

Hurray!

Won’t this please our corporate overlords at Twitter? (Probably not, but, you know, can’t hurt to try.)

All right, come to the annual lighting ceremony with the Mayor this Thursday evening, if you want:

“Snowflakes on Market – Lighting Ceremony
Nov. 17, 2011 through mid-January 2012

More than 140 five-foot-wide energy-saving LED illuminated snowflakes will decorate Market Street’s signature “Path of Gold” light poles this winter from Second to Sixth streets. A lighting ceremony, featuring dancers from the San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker, is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. near the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market streets. The event is free and open to the public. For information, visit www.marketstreetassociation.org

It will go a little something like this, probably.

Dixitque Gavin fiat lux, et facta est lux:

Those are Nutcracker-starring “Snowflakes” from the San Francisco Ballet. (The run starts up again December 9th this year.) Jessica Carter is the snowflake in the middle, so I’m told.

Happy Holidays!

The Merry Pranksters of Steiner Street – When Halloween Comes Early to the Western Addition – Weaving Spiders Come Not Here

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Last year, this prankster on Post Street could make a fake spider jump from two stories up. And you could do the same, why not?

All you have to do is set up an extra long string over the edge of the fire escape and you’re in business. Give a tug when people walk by and you could scare them.

These days spider-fearers are best off hanging out in Union Square, where the influential Bohemian Club has banned arachnids of all types.
