I’ll tell you, some days the Internet gets inundated with questions about stereotypical weather girl Christina Loren and some days it does not. I think it mostly* has to do with what outfit she happens to be wearing on that particular day, mostly. This is Monday’s effort:

San Francisco Housing Associations File Lawsuit to Block Anti-Family Legislation
San Francisco – On Tuesday January 28, 2014, the San Francisco Apartment Association, Coalition for Better Housing and the San Francisco Association of REALTORS® filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of legislation known as the Avalos Ellis Act and Merger Prohibition Legislation.
The legislation was passed by the Board of Supervisors and signed into law by Mayor Ed Lee in violation of building owners’ rights under the state law known as the Ellis Act.
The legislation prohibits owners of multi-unit buildings from combining units in a building for ten years following an Ellis Act eviction or for five years following an owner-move in eviction.
On a practical level, the legislation prevents families who own a building from creating a home that meets their needs. For example, the legislation prevents a family from combining two small units into a larger one to provide a home for a growing family. Couples with young children often find themselves in need of additional space they did not anticipate when they purchased a rental building, yet the legislation punishes them.
Only 2 percent of new housing built in San Francisco since 2001 are single-family homes that provide adequate space for families, often with multiple generations living together. Lack of adequate housing to meet the needs of families has contributed San Francisco losing 5,278 people younger than 18 between 2000 and 2010, according to the census.
“The San Francisco Association of REALTORS® supports the rights of private property owners for the free use of their property as their needs suit them. This legislation only exacerbates the problems families face in finding adequate housing and drives out the families that have created the diversity we want and celebrate in our city,” said Walt Baczkowski, CEO of the San Francisco Association of Realtors.
Because so few single family homes are being constructed, families rely on improving buildings they own, including tenancies in common to add living space. This legislation prohibits them from creating the home they need in a building they own.
“Families are fleeing San Francisco due to a multitude of reasons that include a lack of adequate space for growing families that often include multiple generations. This legislation exacerbates that problem by punishing and limiting options for families who simply seek to create a home that meets the needs of their family,” stated Janan New, Executive Director of the San Francisco Apartment Association. “This legislation punishes hard working families, while doing little to protect renters.”
The lawsuit states that the legislation is pre-empted by state law known as the Ellis Act, which allows building owners to take a building off the rental market and convert those units to condominiums or single -family homes. Under the law, building owners are already required to give occupants up to one year advance notice and provide relocation fees of $5,210 per tenant, up to a maximum of $15,632, plus $3,473 additional for tenants who are senior or disabled.
“My clients are seeking relief from this just-passed legislation which unfairly takes away the right of individuals and families who simply want to create a home for themselves and their family in a building they own,” stated Jim Parrinello, attorney for the plaintiffs.
1. So KTVU, the way to make up for your error is to disclose what occurred, IMO. The way NOT to do it is to air “Success Makers*” featuring “Survivor” winner Yul Kwon interviewing other notable Korean Americans. This tit-for-tat, Black-Eye vs. Feather-in-the-Cap, yes-but-is-it-good-for-the-Jews accounting system is a big fat joke and everybody knows it. If you all want to air this kind of “aspirational” bullcrap at 7 AM on a Sunday morning, well then be my guest, but you don’t need to commit the U.S. Media Blunder of the Year 2013 first, right? One thing has nothing to do with the other, IRL. You can throw a bone to the Asian American Journalists Association whenever you want, right? Why connect the two?
2. OTOH, KTVU, if you want to go through the pretty much pointless process of sending out take-down notices hither and yon so that certain people, certain older, out of touch people, can see that you’re trying to placate them, well, at least that makes more sense than Success Makers.
3. So, KTVU, what happened? Your viewing public is confused. And rightly so, since you’re hiding your own story from them. Some think that you all got punked by another TV station as payback for all the crowing you were doing about your Asiana coverage up to that point. Others think that some low-level KTVU employee made a joke and then things got out of hand. But that’s not what I heard.
4. My theory. Some aviation buff from the Midwest, let’s say in Illinois or a neighboring state, posts on a regional forum that the names all the pilots have just been revealed: “Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow.” This joke just sat out there for a day or so and then it started getting repeated on other boards and Twitter and the like. A retired pilot, somebody that KTVU had dealt with in the past, came across the names but didn’t get the joke. So he earnestly passed the names along to a contact at KTVU and that’s what got the ball rolling. Do you want a guess on who that person is? Well, my WAG is a former United Airlines pilot who’s now living in a leafy East Bay suburb. Someone who is older. He’s younger than my grandmother, who would not have gotten the joke either, but old enough to have grown up in a more sober-minded era. (That’s an era where a kind of blue-collar, single-income fam could actually afford to buy a Brady Bunch kind of house on an ironically-named street just before it massively appreciated.)
5. So then, the KTVU crew runs the names by a Chinese-American(?) woman who doesn’t wonder why all the Korean pilots have Chinese-sounding names? (NB: If you don’t have a Kim, a Lee, or a Park in there, then something might very well be suspect.) And the news reader lady, who, after all is pretty much mindlessly reading the Teleprompter, pronounced one of the names as Fook instead of Fuck and boy aren’t we clever to not make that mistake
6. I’ll tell you, it’ll take a long time before a carrier like Asiana has four Chinese national pilots on one of its widebodies. OTOH, there were a heck of a lot of Chinese passengers on the Korean plane. Why’s that? Well, I’ll tell you, one of my former co-workers flew to South Korea last year just before the SFO disaster and this person specifically avoided using the two big Korean carriers even though it cost hundreds more to do so. Why? A strong mistrust of South Korean aviation safety. So, a Chinese carrier, Taiwanese, American? Sure, but not Asiana. One assumes that Asiana had pretty low fares in the summer of 2013…
7. So KTVU, as long as your happy, huh? You had a problem, you dealt with it, you fired some people, you paid off some settlement(s) for firing some people, you aired an aspirational TV show to several thousands of viewers and that’s that. What this all reminds me of is what the San Francisco Chronicle went through after it posted DIARY OF A SEX SLAVE, which was a major investment in time and money.** Boy, that one really hit the fan. After this similar kind of backlash, the Chron agreed not to syndicate the series, which prolly cost the Chron big bucks I’m guessing. Oh well.
8. Anyway, KTVU, that’s what some people might be thinking, but not saying. Try to focus on what’s correct, not what’s confirmed, you old MSM dinosaur you. The way you handled this mess is a bigger problem than the initial mess itself is what I’m saying. Go and sin no more. And I’ll tell you, the FAA / NTSB gets an A+ so far for the accident investigation. It’s like a WHAT WENT WRONG SO WE DON’T DO THIS AGAIN kind of thing. Why doesn’t KTVU do the same kind of thing so we can all benefit?

The National Transportation Safety Board today released the agenda for the two-day investigative hearing on the ongoing investigation into the July 6 crash landing of Asiana Airlines flight 214.
The hearing will be held on December 10th & 11th at the NTSB’s Board Room and Conference Center at 429 L’Enfant Plaza SW in Washington D.C. and begins at 9:00 a.m. on the first day and 8:30 a.m. on the second day.
Hearing witnesses, including representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing, Asiana Airlines, Korean Office of Civil Aviation, and International Federation of Air Line Pilot’s Associations,Commercial Air Safety Team will testify and answer questions from NTSB Board members, technical staff, and parties about flight deck design concepts and characteristics, pilot training on automated systems and visual approach procedures, pilot awareness in highly automated aircraft, emergency response, and cabin safety. A media room is also available with tables, chairs and an audio mult box with interpretations of the proceedings into English, Mandarin and Korean. Audio headsets will be provided. Generally-accepted media credentials will be required for access to the media room. In addition, a fully equipped overflow room has been established and will serve as a storage area for video equipment during the hearing.
Seating for the general public in the Board Room is on a first-come, first-served basis. Given the international makeup of those onboard Asiana flight 214, the hearing will be webcast live in English, Mandarin and Korean. Access to the webcast can be found at www.ntsb.gov.
There will be standard federal security procedures for entry into the Board Room and Conference Center. All persons entering the facility will need to show a photo ID and their possessions will be subject to inspection. So IDK, would you, Gentle Reader, suppose that different strategies were applied for 2010 and 2011 vs. 2012? I would. Because the “non-contribution portions of membership dues” went from $0 in 2010 and 2011 all the way up to $135,933 in 2012. Is there any explanation for this? Did the accountant(?) for 2011 and earlier fill out the 990 forms incorrectly? IDK. Is this kind of a thing a big deal, worth amending a bunch of other recent returns? IDK.
(Did IRS laws on this topic change the past several years? I don’t think so, as this guide from 2008 remains unchanged.)
Now when I say “membership dues,” what’s actually written in there for 2012 is “memberships.” Now memberships is a different thing, IMO. Memberships is what the SFBC spent a lot of time crowing about when memberships were actually increasing. But these days memberships are decreasing. Why is that? I ask.
So, what the SFBC is now calling it a 3% “membership income change” I’d call it a 3% membership dues decrease. And this comes at a time when the population of San Francisco is increasing and at a time when SFGov and the SFBC officially “expect” a sixfold increase in the number of trips made by bicycle in San Francisco by 2020, all the way up to 20%. (“20 by ’20” or something.) I don’t think anybody believes in this fantasy, you know, actually, but, well, there you go.
So, membership dues at the SFBC have decreased more like 3% year over year, rather than 40-something percent.
But if I were running the SFBC and I were as sensitive about giving out my 990’s as this…

Now, what could explain this sudden and dramatic drop in “support?”
Well, we had the Chris Bucchere accident in the first quarter of 2012 and some members didn’t exactly approve of the way that SFBC officers dealt with the issue. Perhaps revenue went down in the following quarters?
And we had the shocking SFBC endorsement of Republican-backed Mayor Ed Lee near the end of 2011 – I doubt that paying members would have approved of that had they been given the opportunity.
You know, this guy, the one who always looks up to the formerly-despised Willie Brown:
Of course, people can always do a Barter Membership, but you’d think that dues-paying members would volunteer anyway, right?
Take a look at the numbers on the tax returns, it seems as if the SFBC is just another arm of the SFMTA or, indeed, of SFGov. (Except it’s an agency that can officially endorse Ed Lee for Mayor.)
Anyway, this is why the SFBC no longer boasts of increasing membership anymore.

And here’s a test. Would you, gentle reader, call the guns that most of the SFPD strap on every day assault weapons? I don’t think so. So like for instance, “the sergeant drew her assault weapon and pointed it at the suspect.” If you said something like that, I wouldn’t know what you were talking about. Most likely, you’d use the term pistol or handgun or revolver or something like that, right?
So that’s why calling an everyday, run-of-the-mill handgun an “assault weapon” isn’t the right thing to do.

Though comprehensive official minutes of the DCCC’s special meeting at California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium will be forthcoming, member and committee reports included several updates on: the upcoming fall campaign; the hiring of a new executive director; current party finances and fundraising plans, including an event centered on President Obama’s nomination acceptance speech; voter registration; the redesigned party website and expanded communications efforts; and amending practices to meet many standards codified in the Brown Act and S.F. Sunshine Ordinance. The DCCC also voted on a vendor for its fall slate card program.
Public comments included numerous speakers advocating individually and on their organizations’ behalf for local candidates and measures; a monthly update on Organizing for America; concerns that the California Democratic Party endorsed Proposition 35 without consideration to official opponents and concerns from the sex worker community. Two speakers called on DCCC members to address themselves to community concerns that policies governing the Castro’s Rainbow Flag do not comport with Presidential proclamations and other exigencies that merit lowering the flag to half-mast when appropriate.
The lone new business item was a resolution passed by a majority of DCCC members that condemned inflammatory and offensive anti-Muslim advertising on Muni vehicles, and called on city officials and MTA authorities to change policies to prohibit such hate speech in the future.
Members John Rizzo and Hene Kelly closed the meeting by memorializing the late Milton Marks III, a highly regarded Community College Board member and former DCCC colleague, who passed away Aug. 9 at the age of 52. The meeting was adjourned in Marks’s honor.

“SFPD Seek Public’s Assistance in Attempted Homicide Investigation
Posted Date: 11/25/2011
On November 24, 2011 at 2:45 AM, an attempted homicide occurred on the corner of 9th Ave/Geary. Prior to the incident the victim and suspect got into a physical altercation inside of a restaurant on the corner of 11th Ave/Geary in San Francisco. Both victim and suspect were eventually separated and left the restaurant. The victim then walked to a gas station located on 9th Ave/Geary. The suspect described as a mixed race or Latin male, 18-24 years old, with short black hair and a manicured beard was then seen getting into the pictured vehicle listed below and drove off.
The suspect then drove his vehicle, described as a black Mazda CX type SUV with possible front end damage, and twelve spoke sports rims into the gas station on 9th/Geary and intentionally struck the victim. The suspect fled the scene. Witnesses to the fight took photos of the suspect at the time of the fight. The victim received life threatening injuries due to being struck by the suspect vehicle.
San Francisco Police Criminal Investigations Unit is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect in this attempted homicide. Witnesses or persons with information are asked to call the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or “Text-a-Tip” at TIP411 from their cell phones. Please include “SFPD’ in the beginning of the text message.”

I remember when I used to come here late at night. It’s like a rainbow coalition meeting. You have your clubbers, pub crawlers, homeless and 3rd shifters getting their Jack on. Since the inside is small we were all elbow to elbow forced into a temporary bonding moment that even would make Martin Luther King smile as he watched his dream come true.
But that dream was crushed as they have started to lock their doors after 10pm. That’s right folks.. you are now limited to ordering through a walk-thru. If you haven’t seen the walk-thru it’s a contraption that relies on “The Cube” where you put your money through.”
