Dirty Harry 1970′s Time Capsule: Groove on KGO’s Orange Chopper and KPIX 5′s Robin’s Egg Blue Van

Well, Dirty Harry debuted 40 years ago so let’s use his movie series to see what the 415 looked like back in the 1970′s.

From The Enforcer, here’s KGO Radio’s groovy orange Bell 47J Ranger, looking not that much different from the choppers they used on M*A*S*H*.

Above the old Embarcadero Freeway and close to the build site for Embarcadero 4 (our youngest Embarcadero, it turns out) and Embarcadero 5,  the crazy Hyatt Regency Embarcadero Hotel:

And back then, the Equinox revolving restaurant actually revolved. See it atop the Hyatt?

“The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is a large, imposing exposed concrete structure. It was built in 1972, designed by notorious architect John Portman. He is known for his outlandish designs. The Hyatt Regency here is no exception. It’s hard to describe, but I’ll try. It was built as a modern concrete structure around an atrium with extensive use of odd angles…presumably to take advantage of the odd, triangular-shaped property and beautiful bay/city views. From some angles it looks like a normal building, others like a pyramid, and from yet others like spires shooting up to the sky. It’s extremely unique and enjoyable to look at by us architecture and engineering dweebs. To everyone else, it’s a big gaudy hotel that is seriously starting to look dated architecturally.”

Now here’s Harry leaving City Hall back in the mid-1970′s – can you imagine an uglier color than this blue?

I can’t.

Attention Bay Area Pilots: Don’t Get Too Creative with Your Airplane’s “N” Number

Here’s what you can’t do with your aircraft’s tail number. What you can’t do is get all creative to the point where people can’t read it.

‘Cause when you go flat-hatting over San Francisco’s Ferry Building in your aging Piper PA-34-200T Seneca II, you need to have your license plate legible for tout le monde to see. That’s how the system works.

What you can’t do is take away the middle part of the ID numbers leaving all the 0′s, 3′s, 6′s, and 8′s looking alike. That don’t fly.

The turbocharged Piper Seneca II, for the times when your Saratoga can’t get you there fast enough:

Anyway, people need to know who pilots are for the times they land on the wrong end of the runway ‘n stuff.

Is That What You All Call Snow, Bay Area? Nothing Beats the Winter of Ought-Two for Snow

If it’s colder than normal this AM and there’s some white stuff on the ground, well then I guess you could say it snowed in the San Francisco Bay Area. But back before the global warming the climate change, back in 2002, we had SNOW, baby.

As here, in ought-two up in Marin County on Mount Tamalpais, when I was out prospecting for gold with my donkey and/or on my Trek 8000 mountain bike (born 1991, Waterloo Wisconsin, died 2006, Civic Center, San Francisco). This is what it looked like in the afternoon ’til the rain melted everything.

Now that was snow, the most we’ve had since 1976.

So, nothing after 1976 has beaten 2002 for snow in the bay area. (I think.)
