2008 Illegal Soapbox Derby atop Bernal Heights Cancelled by SFPD

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Well it was on the Laughing Squid, so everybody knew about the 2008 Illegal Soapbox Derby atop San Francisco’s Bernal Hill. Not to be confused with the recent Red Bull event in Dolores Park last month, the illegal (possibly lacking a permit, and insurance, and…) Bernal Heights soap box derby has pleased one and all for years.

But then word came from from Mission Mission that that Recreation and Parks Rangers and San Francisco Police Department officers would be on hand to shut this mother down.

And so it was.

This racer had to back his rig away from last year’s starting gate, later closed altogether, under orders of an RPD Ranger:

Things were no different at the bottom of the hill, with these SFPD officers giving the bad news to organizers:

Genial sergeant Miller arrived to discuss matters with an organizer and respected neighborhood poobah Todd “First Class” Lappin, but any subsequent soapbox derbying on the hill was disorganized and fleeting:

So there you have it, no soap box today, at least at Bernal Heights Park there wasn’t.

See you next year?

San Francisco Halloween: Official Vs. Unofficial

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

If you want the short version of what happened last night, take a look at Dave Golden’s great high-ISO photos with his Nikon on Flickr (which would not be possible to produce with Nikon digital equipment even just a few years ago) and this early report on SFGate and this rather negative take from KPIX. And see street party suppressor David Perry point of view here.

Or you can have the long version:

First, let’s travel back in time to San Francisco Halloween Past. It looked like this, with huge crowds in the Castro District:

See the huge crowd?

Even crosstown rivals the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders managed to get along:

But the word crowd starts with the letter “C” and that rhymes with “T” and that stands for Trouble.

So now in 2008, Halloween in San Francisco is officially cancelled, or not, depending you look at it. Last night we had this, a police effort to keep traffic moving through the Castro. At this, the SFPD generally succeeded. Because the spice must flow, you know:

Read all about it here, which reads like the official blog of the City and County of San Francisco. Now, of course you can still see what the old Halloween looked like, before the NIMBY homeowners of the Castro got their way, but just not as much of it.

Honoring the late Yves Saint Laurent:

Credit cards! Now, those can be scary, especially these days.

And speaking of scary, how does evidence of falling gas prices scare potential alernative vehicle investors?

Per reports, about 30 people were arrested in the Castro are for being drunk in public.

Anyway, that was unofficial San Francisco Halloween in the Castro. Some people didn’t show because they listened to the white men here.

As for Official San Francisco Halloween in Parking Lot A:

You could watch Godzilla for free with a handful of others…”

…or listen to a perfectly viable Latin jazz band with a couple hundred of others.

Turnout was about what you’d expect to get in a dark parking lot with heavy police presence.

Speaking of which, the city’s official free party is a magnet for young people and all the assorted trouble young people get into to. You can’t sneak in, so you have to go through a Super Bowl style security cattle chute. So the criminal element circles around the parking lot, attracted and yet repelled.

Add it all up, and the Castro area comes out ahead as far as personal safety is concerned. Next ranked would be inside the perimeter of Parking Lot A. Last ranked would be the area surrounding Parking Lot A. If you charged a cover, then you’d keep out the riff raff, but then why would people come?

A brief police detention on 3rd Street, just outside the official party near AT&T Park.

Possession of eggs on Halloween is not yet a crime, at least not yet, anyway.

Akit brings it all home for us on his blog.

On it goes.

Happy Halloween. See you next year in the Castro!

Fantastic New Afghanistan Exhibit at the Asian Art Museum

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Well it’s on over at the Asian Art Museum. The fantastic new show is Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul.

Now it’s got its fair share of bling, more than enough to hold you until King Tut hits town in 2009, but all these golden treasures come with a story. Read all about it over at the National Geographic and look at some high resolution photos here. And see what San Francisco Art Examiner Marisa Nakasone thinks about it here.

Oh no! It’s the Rebirth of Castro Halloween. Die Dow, Die!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Look out! The same people (such as “composer, lyricist, scriptwriter, concert hound, music reviewer and web designer” Mark Tyne) who brought the Death of Castro Halloween funeral procession all the way down Market Street from the Ferry Building in 2007 are at it again.

Except this year the theme is the Death of Wall Street and the Rebirth of Castro Halloween. So we’ll see you out there, unless you get cowed by the ham-fisted “Home for Halloween” people, who would probably prefer you to stay at home and watch Major Dad reruns on the telly.

This pair of queens in the Castro shared a nice moment with a masked wrestler back in 2006, back in the good old days:

Fleet Week 2008 a Huge Success in San Francisco

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Here are photos from San Francisco’s Fleet Week air show on Sunday, October 12, 2008. Here’s what it looked like the day before and years past.

Despite being called The Patriots, this flight team uses Russkie-designed jets. Hmmm. Anyway, the backseater doesn’t look too happy. Click to expand:

From Ogden with love. This Viper West U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon based out of Hill Air Force Base in Utah shows us all what full afterbuner looks like.

Look at them shock waves as the F-18 Hornet approaches the speed of sound. Apparently, “the public generally responds negatively to sonic booms“, but I think we could handle it. The sound would be like this.

Just when you get one into focus, the other one squirms away…

Columbus Day Parade 2008 Goes on Without Tommy Lasorda

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Well it’s still there on the 2008 Italian Heritage Parade website:

“We’re pleased to announce, the 2008 Parade Grand Marshal will be Tommy Lasorda!”

But alas, it was not to be. The whole thing is ably explained by North Beach Examiner Tony Long here and here. Perhaps Tommy will be invited back next year?

Now, on with the show. It’s called Columbus Day, or Indigenous People’s Day, or Italian Heritage Day, or Día de la Raza, or Discovery Day or even Día de la Resistencia Indígena. Take your pick.

Popular San Francisco Supervisor and soon-to-be Assembly Member Tom Ammiano. Click to expand:

Of course, Birra Peroni was nella casa:

As was the Boudin Bakery alligator wrestler. That’s real bread, people.

What’s this? Hundreds of Falun Gong! They looked to be the largest entry in the parade by far.

Hey look, it’s the wholly unrelated New Tang Dynasty Televsion (NTDTV):

O.K., here we are, back to the parade:

So that’s it.

Here’s to you, Tommy Lasorda/ Our county turns it lonely eyes to you…

See you next year?

Blue Angels Return to San Francisco - Fleet Week 2008

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

The best place to see the Blue Angels during Fleet Week must be atop the North Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Here’s what it looked like on Saturday, October 11, 2008.

Fleet Week 2008 - Saturday’s Parade of Ships Cancelled

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Due to “unfavorable water conditions” [srsly] the Parade of Ships skedded for tomorrow morning isn’t going to happen, per the U.S. Navy:

“The Parade of Fleet Week Ships that was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008, has been cancelled.  Due to unfavorable water conditions, the U.S. Navy regretfully advises that the ships will instead arrive on the morning of Sunday, October 12, 2008.

“The flight schedule for Fleet Week 2008 will remain the same, including the Blue Angels flying Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Ship tours may be delayed slightly.”

Bummer. More details from Carl Nolte.

San Francisco’s Fleet Week 2008, Starring the Navy’s Blue Angels

Friday, October 10th, 2008

October has arrived, so it’s time for another Fleet Week in San Francisco. What’s Fleet Week?

Fleet Week is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas operations dock in a variety of major cities for one week. Once the ships dock, the crews can enter the city and visit its tourist attractions. At certain hours, the public can take a guided tour of the ships. Often, Fleet Week is accompanied by military demonstrations and airshows such as provided by the Blue Angels.

O.K. then. See some photos of Fleet Weeks past and also this weekend’s schedule below.
