This was the scene last night at the Palace of Fine Arts, where Stanfurd freshman and bay area local Crystal Lee was crowned Miss Chinatown USA 2010. It’s international news.

Photographer Eric Risberg must have still had the sleepers in his eyes this AM when he captured the new Cunard cruise ship Queen Victoria making her debut in San Francisco. Here’s how she looked going under the Golden Gate Bridge and past Alcatraz.
Look for her at the Pier 35 Cruise Ship Terminal (you know, the one that’s the most expensive to operate on the entire west coast, and that includes Canada, eh?)
How would you like to kill 107 days traveling the world? It would only cost $25k (and up):

Here we go, straight out of the shipyards of Trieste, Italy, it’s Cunard’s Motor Ship Queen Victoria! Well, guess what – she’s coming to San Francisco on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010, so plan accordingly.
This is going to be the biggest thing to hit town since the Queen Mary 2 back in ought-seven.
But don’t call the QV an ocean liner, oh no, she’s just a cruise ship owing to her lack of freeboard, among other things. Oh well.

Queen Victoria Makes Her U.S. Maiden Call to Port of San Francisco Jan. 27, 2010
Cunard Line’s youngest ship, Queen Victoria, will make her maiden call to San Francisco on Jan. 27, 2010, marking her only U.S. inaugural call in the next year.
Queen Victoria will stop in San Francisco as part of the first segment of her third world voyage. Expected to pass under the Golden Gate Bridge at approximately 6 a.m., she will dock at Pier 35 at 6:30 a.m. before departing at 6 p.m. for Hawaii. Designed in the grand Cunard tradition, the 2,000-passenger Queen Victoriais the second largest Cunarder ever built, weighing in at 90,000 gross tons and measuring 964.5 feet from stem to stern – more than 110 feet longer than San Francisco’s tallest building, the Transamerica Pyramid.
Thousands of spectators lined the shores of San Francisco Bay in 2007 when Cunard’s flagship, Queen Mary 2, made her first call in San Francisco. Best viewing locations include the Golden Gate Bridge – vista points on both north and south sides of the span; Fort Mason; Crissy Field and the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Not officially or anything, but the DPT /SFMTA / SFPD folks who normally work on keeping inbound Market Street free of cars from Eighth Street to Fifth Street took a break last Friday (yes, Black Friday). So it was like totally wide open to traffic, temporarily anyway.
This was the result: a string of slow-moving vehicles for as far as you could see, all the way to the Ferry Building. Click to expand:
Note the new signs. The previous versions talked about how “private vehicles” were banned from continuing. The current versions allow ”buses, taxis, trucks, and bikes” on Market. So that makes things more clear for the tourists.
Speaking of whom, Our Visitors just ignore the signs. They understand that they need to keep out of the bus and taxi-only diamond lanes, but they don’t seem to get the idea that they’re not allowed to proceed on Market the way they used to. It seems they need a crew of MUNI Parking Control Officers to tell them what’s up.
Oh well.
(Myself, I got doored by one of these cars a couple minutes after I snapped this photo. I was on the slow lane of the beige portion of the street to the right of the vehicle when the passenger door opened - it was an against-the-rule dooring just like the Incident at the Juicy Couture.
Oh well.)

Last night’s meeting on the proposed Geary Corridor Bus Rapid Transit Project was co-hosted by District One Supervisor Mar and the San Francisco Country Transportation Authority. Lots of people showed up, including at least one blogger – read all about the meeting here at the Richmond District Blog.
They’re still working on some major details, so it’s not too late for citizens such as yourself to get involved. Just saying.

Supervisor Eric Mar and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority will co-host a community meeting to discuss the progress of the GearyCorridor Bus Rapid Transit Environmental Impact Report/Statement (EIR/EIS), among other transportation improvements under consideration for the thoroughfare. The Authority and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) are well underway with the Geary BRT environmental review process and are seeking public feedback on the analysis of changes in traffic and parking conditions, construction strategies, as well as pedestrian and streetscape enhancements that would be part of the BRT project. Agency staff also will be on hand to discuss related Geary corridor improvements, including the Mid-Richmond Traffic Calming Project.
Following up on the Geary BRT public scoping sessions held in December 2008, this community meeting will provide an opportunity for neighbors, business owners, and transit users to discuss the benefits and potential impacts of the project under consideration. The Authority hopes to finalize the Geary BRT EIR/EIS in 2010. For more information about the Geary BRT effort, visit www.GearyBRT.org.
