Chocolate Salon! Chocolate Salon! Chocolate Salon! Coming to SF on March 20th

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

If you pony up $25 right now, then you can look forward to feeling like Homer Simpson in the Land of Chocolate come Saturday, March 20th.

Yes, the massive TasteTV San Francisco International Chocolate Salon is back for 2010 up at Fort Mason’s Herbst Pavillion.

It’s going to be mega.

There’ll be samples a plenty so check the sked and map out your journey before you go cocoa-crazy. (It’ll tide you over ’til the 15th  annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival up at the Wharf in late Summer 2010, anyway) See you there at Ft. Mason on the 20th.

All the deets, after the jump.

Here Comes Big Dig West – Groundbreaking for the Central Subway Begins

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Today’s groundbreaking for our new subway was quite the affair. The Central T will open for business sometime in 20xx – that’s pretty much an inevitability now.

Of course back in the day, we had naysayers. But they’ve given up. After all:

‘This is not going to become the Big Dig.”

All right, I’ll bite. This is not going to become the Big Dig because….? Because why? That remains unstated, unarticulated.

The scene this morning, under a SoMA freeway:

via anglisa

So, yes, of course Boston’s disastrous Central Artery/Tunnel Project isn’t San Francisco’s Central Subway Project. But will there be massive overruns? Sure, I mean they’re pretty much baked into the cake, right? Interested parties would love to see cost overruns – that’s the primary reason why these things happen.

Will San Francisco be better off with this subway than without? Probably.

Will San Franciscans use it? Sure.

All right, thanks for our new subway, America. We’ll get more use out of it than people up north got out of the Everitt Memorial Highway. (Your federal tax dollars paid for that one too. Oh well.)

Let’s Hope It All Works Out.

The Great Unbeigeing – Market Street’s Traffic-Slowing Safety Paint is Peeling Off Already

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

You know that beige color (it’s not paint but I don’t know what it is, actually) that was just put down on Market Street? Well, it’s coming off fast.

From this…

…to this:

Sic transit gloria Market

San Francisco’s Market Street is Going Beige This Afternoon

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

This is the scene near Union Square, inbound, right down the street from the latest the latest MUNI bus vs. cyclist collision.

(Dude got scuffed up by an articulated 38 Geary (or whatever – it’s line number had been switched off) but he looked O.K. when they were putting him the ambulance.)

Anyway, here it is:

Beige? Really? Wasn’t it supposed to be painted green?

(Beige. I think I’ll paint the ceiling beige, after seeing this glorious color up close.)

But, anything for safety’s sake. Hurray!

UPDATE: Turns out, per Bluoz, that this stuff is called “Ride Away/Greenway” or something. It’s from DaVinci Pavement and Design.

And here’s San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Program Director Andy Thornley chirping up to bring it all home:

“It’s actually “fawn” — I brake for Bambi — though others have characterized it as “cafe au lait” or “mochacino” — if it gets people to wake up and pay attention that’s all that matters. It’s another trial for Market Street, joining the forced right turns at 6th & 8th Streets (expect to see 10th Street turns soon) and Art in Storefronts and other good stuff. There’s more to the “Safety Zone” trial, 10 MPH pavement legends and signs, rumble strips, and advance stop lines that will blossom into full-blown bike boxes (with green pavement, you betcha) once the blinking Bike Plan injunction is lifted. These elements (color, rumble strips, 10 MPH marking) will be combined in various ways at the four parts of the 4th & 5th Street intersections (eastbound and westbound), SFMTA and SFCTA folks will be watching and evaluating to see which things are effective at slowing traffic and getting folks to watch out for each other, and then they’ll take the winning combination and implement it at all Market St boarding islands from Castro to the Embarcadero. Get yourself a fresh soy latte and roll on down for a test ride . . .”

So There You Have It.

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Of course, it’s just one per person, while supplies last, yadayadayada. San Francisco (and Emeryville) locales are listed below – find any boutique in the U.S. right here.

Check it. Speaking of OMG, note the golden ”GOD Chocolat” part of the ad. Does Godiva know what they did there? Hell to the yes they know what they did there. Why they made the ad that way shall remain a mystery:

Now, they might try to slip you a truffle with sea salt on it, but all you have to say is, “Sea salt belongs in the ocean, not on my truffle. Give me a different one.” There you go.

To conclude, OMG, OMG, OMG - free truffles!

San Francisco Theater Festival a Huge Success at Yerba Buena Gardens

Here’s the sched and here are a bunch of photos. That should whet your appetite for next year.

Yes, it’s all free. See you next year!

“The San Francisco theater scene can become stronger and more vigorous, appealing to community members who do not currently benefit from the contribution theater arts make to one’s life through activities like the Theater Festival. Director Peter Sellars has noted that bringing people together for a shared theatrical experience does more than create good art; it creates and nurtures a sense of community and an interest in the common good.

The Festival creates access and expands the theater audience. Working together to put on the Festival, the theater community conducts a large-scale event that gains the attention of the broader community. The Festival induces cross-pollination of audiences as attendees interested in one performing group stay to see others. As the Festival grows, we will see theater audiences expanding, leading to more performances, more productions, and more theater jobs, as well as a richer cultural experience for all community members.

While there are festivals for film, dance, jazz, blue grass, beer, and wine, there is no comparable festival for theater. The San Francisco Theater Festival is unique. This is the only showcase for Bay Area live theater, presenting the full spectrum of theater groups. This is the only festival that takes place on one day or a single weekend, providing the audience with an opportunity to sample conveniently the many theaters available here. This is the only FREE festival, thereby providing open access to all.”

Every summer on July 4th weekend in San Francisco, Fillmore Street is home to the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast: The Fillmore Jazz Festival.

Golden Gate Park’s 4th Annual International Children’s Festival a Huge Success

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Hundreds turned out under sunny skies today for the 4th Annual International Children’s Festival in Golden Gate Park today. The event featured “authentic Turkish food like baklava, stuffed grape leaves, traditional manti (Turkish ravioli), kabobs and Turkish coffee.

O.K. then.

See you next year!

Children and families from cultures all over the world will unite at the 4th Annual International Children’s Festival on Saturday, May 9 in Golden Gate Park to share fun, food and festive celebrations to bring everyone together as one global community.

“We want to share all of the diverse heritages represented in the Bay Area in one location on May 9,” said Yucel Durak, Festival Organizer. “By bringing children together, we can learn from other people and develop a true understanding of different cultures on our planet.”

The main focus of the event is to promote the wide diversity of people in the greater San Francisco area through the art of dance and performing arts. The highlight of the dance performances will be a series of Turkish dances as well as Azerbaijan, Bosnian, Scottish, Indian, Hawaiian and even Korean. Local public and dance schools will also have performances.

“The Scottish, Hawaiian and Korean dancers are very popular crowd-pleasers,” Durak said. “I am looking forward to seeing the Turkish, Bosnian and traditional Indian dancers to have a better appreciation of their heritage and culture.”

The big attraction will also be the vendor marketplace – featuring traditional items for sales and of course plenty of tasty food. This year, the 4th Annual International Children’s Festival will feature a special selection of Turkish foods and treats. Some of the tasty menu items include baklava, stuffed grape leaves, traditional manti (Turkish ravioli), kabobs and Turkish coffee. The authentic Turkish food will be available at 12 p.m.

“The different types of Turkish food will be one of the best parts of the event this year,” Durak said. “Food is one thing we all share in common and it’s not only educational, but a lot of fun, to enjoy all the different dishes.”

The entire 4th Annual International Children’s Festival runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Golden Gate Park at 50 Tea Garden Drive. The event takes place at the Music Concourse Bandshell Area grassy area between the Cal Science Academy Museum and the De Young Museum. Attendance is free and open to the public.

For more information on the 4th Annual International Children’s Festival, presented by the Pacifica Institute and co-sponsored by Bay Area Cultural Connections, please call Yucel Durak at 408-747-1478.

Coming off a recent Anatolian Cultures and Food Festival in Orange County that drew more than 30,000 people, more information about the main organizer, Pacifica Institute, can be found on the web at http://www.pacificainstitute.org. Meanwhile, more information about co-sponsor Bay Area Cultural Connections can be found at http://www.baycc.org.

Happy Fourth of July from San Francisco, California!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Here’s what it will look like tonight at around 9:30 PM on the waterfront in San Francisco.

Assuming the weather holds out – it certainly doesn’t look like it will be the foggiest fourth in S.F. history, so that’s good.
