The California Dream was built on a system of public schools and colleges that gave every Californian access to the education needed to get ahead. Gov. Jerry Brown is pushing hard for Prop. 30 because he says “we can’t keep cutting our schools and still keep the economy strong for the next generation.” In the last four years alone, California schools have been hit with $20 billion in cuts, over 30,000 fewer teachers and class sizes that are among the largest in the country. Brown says his Prop. 30 stops the cuts, stops the steep tuition hikes, and invests in our schools and colleges to prepare the next generation for the jobs of the future. To protect schools and invest in the future, Prop. 30. Prop. 30 asks California’s wealthiest to pay a little more so that the middle class doesn’t have to bear the burden; families making below $500,000 a year will pay no additional income taxes, and the sales tax will be established at a level lower than it was last year.

The governor says that Prop. 30 protects taxpayers with tough accountability measures: all new revenues are put into a dedicated account that Sacramento politicians can’t touch, and Prop. 30 requires annual audits posted online for everyone to see. Rejection of Prop. 30 would trigger $6 billion in state spending cuts on January 1, mostly from K-12 schools, which would be authorized to cut short their school year. Additionally, there would be a 5 percent tuition hike at the California State University system, 20 percent tuition hikes at the University of California, and a reduction in funding to community colleges.

Governor Brown has said,”There are a lot of people who I am confident will vote ‘yes’ if they get the facts.” Come hear the governor up close – and bring your questions.

“Republican presidential candidate and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann will present her views on pro-business economic policies that will allow private sector businesses to compete in the global market while addressing the need for job-skill retraining, innovation, comprehensive tax reform and reduction of regulations that threaten jobs. She will also share her thoughts on how to revive America’s competitive edge and restore the United States to the top of global competitiveness. Bachmann says she is running for president “to bring a new voice to the White House -­ a voice of constitutional conservatism, limited government, and a safe and secure America.”

In July 2010, Bachmann – an unwavering champion of Tea Party values including the call for lower taxes, renewed focus on the Constitution and the need to shrink the size of government – founded the Tea Party Caucus in the United States Congress. In 2006, Bachmann became the first Republican woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota. She says government has grown exponentially, with Obamacare being the most recent example of its uninhibited growth. She says government should make the kind of serious spending decisions that she says many families and small businesses have been forced to make. She champions free markets and believes in the vitality of the family as the first unit of government. She is also a defender of the unborn and stands for religious liberties.
Bachmann currently sits on the Financial Services Committee (FSC) and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Serving on the Intelligence Committee, she has consistently advocated peace through strength to ensure America’s national security.

Prior to serving in the U.S. Congress, Bachmann was elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2000 where she championed the Taxpayers Bill of Rights. Before that, she spent five years as a federal tax litigation attorney, working on both civil and criminal cases. She also led the charge on education issues in Minnesota where she recognized the need for quality schools and subsequently started a charter school for at-­‐risk kids there.

Bachmann received her J.D. at the O.W. Coburn School of Law at Oral Roberts University and an L.L.M. in Tax Law at the College of William and Mary. She received her B.A. from Winona State University. She and her husband Marcus, to whom she has been married over thirty years, live with their five children in Stillwater, Minn. They own a small business mental health care practice that employs nearly 50 people. In addition, the Bachmann family has opened their home to 23 foster children, which has inspired Bachmann to become one of Congress’ leading advocates for foster and adopted children, earning her bipartisan praise for her efforts.”

“Jose Antonio Vargas Shares His Story for the First Time with INFORUM

Journalist and Pulitzer Prize Winner to Talk about his Struggle as an Illegal Immigrant

San Francisco – June 29, 2011 – Commonwealth Club’s INFORUM, today announced that Jose Antonio Vargas, successful journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner best known for chronicling his life as an illegal immigrant in the Unites States, will share his story in one of his first public interviews Monday, July 11, at the Commonwealth Club’s SF Club Office, 595 Market Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco.

Vargas has been living illegally in the United States since the age of 12. In conversation with Phil Bronstein, The San Francisco Chronicle’s editor-at-large, Vargas will share his impressive story of struggle to belong and find success in the United States. Raised in Mountain View, Calif., Vargas started his triumphant career working at the San Francisco Chronicle while attending San Francisco State University. In the summer of 2001, Vargas got his first internship at the Philadelphia Daily News and continued on to intern at publications such as the Seattle Times and the Washington Post. Vargas wrote a series on Washington’s H.I.V./AIDS epidemic, covered the role of technology and social media in the 2008 presidential race and even visited the White House. In April 2008, he was part of the Post team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the paper’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings. Vargas also founded Define American, an organization seeking to change immigration reform.

John Yoo, Law Professor, UC Berkeley; Author, Crisis and Command

Allen Weiner, Co-director, International Law Program, Stanford Law School – Moderator

At the Department of Justice, Yoo played a large and controversial role in shaping the Bush administration’s policy in the war on terrorism, arguing that prisoner of war status under the Geneva Conventions does not apply to “enemy combatants.” He further asserted executive authority to undertake “enhanced interrogation techniques” regarded as torture by the current Justice Department. Yoo will trace the history of presidential power.
