Here’s the latest from America’s Slowest Big-City Transit System:

Adjusting Fares for a Faster and More Equitable Muni

 1. Leave us begin:

“We’re making changes to Muni fares…”

No MUNI, no! Just say “INCREASE,” MUNI! Say it, say it, oh, ohhh!

Now, what would a normal person say? How about something like this:

Muni raises cash fares by 25 cents under new budget

2. So, here’s another way of saying increase:

“Starting January 1, 2017, single-trip Muni fares paid with Clipper or MuniMobile will cost 25 cents less than fares paid with cash…”

Hey, SFMTA! Why not just keep fares the same and offer a 25-cent discount for using Clipper or whatever? Wouldn’t that be better? And wouldn’t that be more “equitable?” Oh, what’s that, SFMTA, you need more and more and more money to pay for all the mistakes you’ve made over the years and to pay for an expanding crew of highly compensated (indeed – just look at the TCOE (Total Cost Of Employment)) “media relations” staffers and to pay, effectively, for all of our SFMTA’s unique-to-the-world “work rules” what have accumulated over, what, the past century?

3.  Now here’s a puzzler:

“We’ll start with … Providing Clipper Cards without the $3 purchase fee*…”

You’d think the asterix would lead to something else on the page, but it don’t. Oh well!

4. And here’s another impossible goal promised by our SFMTA

“…ensure everyone knows how to get a Clipper Card…”

I’ll tell you, I don’t know how to get a Clipper Card right now. I’m sure I could figure it out, but I’ve never had a reason to get one, oh well. Of course IRL what’s going to happen is that a lot of people will end up paying the 25 cents more. Our SFMTA knows this, but doesn’t seem to want to acknowledge it.

5. Ahem:

“…making Muni a faster, more reliable system…”

How about instead, “Making MUNI a less slow, less unreliable system,” you know, instead?

6. And what’s this?

“Comments for this thread are now closed.”

Well, why’s that, SFMTA? [UPDATE: Comments are now enabled at the SFMTA website. Hurrah.]

Anyway, as always, our SFMTA is run primarily for the benefit of … those who are employed by the SFMTA. Cest la vie, Mon Amie. But, man, it’d sure be nice if our SFMTA could correctly identify Yet Another Fare Increase as such. Oh well.

But the SFMTA isn’t really making anything is it?

Access by foot and bike is pretty limited, the road that loops around the mountain top in a “figure 8” is underused by car traffic and the loop’s intersections are confusing.

OK, well, “access” by foot and bike will still be “pretty limited” after the SFMTA completes the scheme it came up with, right? And let’s take a look at that road, on a dreaded sunny day:

Now, would you say that the east (left) side of this figure 8 is “underused?” No, not at all!

Hey, is being “car-free” a good thing? Like is it as good as being something like herpes-free? One wonders.

On Tuesday, the SFMTA Board of Directors will consider approval of a pilot phase…

This means that the SFMTA is going to do what it wants to do, with the little bit of money it can scrape up to enact its ideology.

The project was shaped with community feedback…

First of all, there’s no community up there atop Twin Peaks. Second of all, if there is, it’s tourists (international, national, regional, and local) and this plan cooked up by the SFMTA is about as anti-tourist as one could imagine.

We’d also create legitimate parking spaces at the center and south intersections to address the illegal parking that already occurs.

WHAT WHAT? So all these People With Cars, the hundreds of People what congregate up there sometimes, they’re parking on the side of the highway “illegitimately?” So it’s legal but it doesn’t comport with SFMTA ideology? Or maybe it’s illegal, but our SFMTA hasn’t seen fit to put up signage what explains things nice and clear for visitors who don’t really have a good handle on English? And so all the scores of places where people park now and, indeed, the past century, all of that was not and is not “legitimate?” Whoo boy.

So the plan is to decrease access IRL and advertise this paint job (that doesn’t add ANYTHING) as one what will “increase” access.

Will that cost anything? Yes.

Will it cost the vaunted SFMTA anything. No, not really. Just a bit of paint…

“Here’s a big hint, SFMTA: 90% of the people who actually live and work in SF do not give a s#$t about the NFL or this party. We are not going to be happy about it no matter how much you try to spin it.”

“I’ve been following this fiasco and planned for a 1 week hiatus but 3 weeks?! And you’re just notifying Commuters now?!”

It goes on and on.

And, mind you, this Comments section, which looks like something you’d see on Reddit, SFGate or SFist, is being hosted at SFMTA.com.

QUESTION: Why does our sad-sack, POS local transit system feel the need to cheerlead for NFL Enterprises LLC?

Octavia Boulevard Update: Anybody Who Claims This Short Road Has “High-Speed Motor Traffic” is Lying

Now if you want real “high-speed motor traffic,” well then look to the 280 freeway.

But if you want a poorly-designed glorified freeway offramp with lots of slow-moving bumper-to-bumper gridlock, well then Octavia is your bingo.

See? This is typical. Traffic has been jammed up here starting about a week after this road opened. This is exactly what low-speed traffic looks like:

“Some Tips to Help SF Weekly Get Over the Free Parking Obsession.

DOES THE SF WEEKLY HAVE AN “OBSESSION” WITH FREE PARKING? NO. SO YOU’RE WRONG, STREETSBLOG. AND YOU’RE DOING A DISSERVICE TO YOUR 80 OR SO DAILY READERS / COMMENTERS WHEN YOU LIE ABOUT STUFF, RIGHT?

“The folks at SF Weekly seem really upset about the end of free car parking on Sundays.”

BY FOLKS PLURAL YOU MEAN ERIN SHERBERT SINGULAR? YES YOU DO. WRONG AGAIN.  AND IS SHE “REALLY UPSET” NO. WRONG AGAIN. AND DOES SHE EVEN “SEEM” TO BE REALLY UPSET? NO. WRONG AGAIN.

The shock is apparently severe enough that Erin Sherbert put up a post yesterday directing readers to sign the petition demanding an absolute end to the SF Municipal Transportation Agency’s expansion of parking meters, launched by the Eastern Neighborhoods United Front (ENUF).

DID SHE “DIRECT” READERS TO DO ANYTHING? NO. WRONG AGAIN.

Many San Franciscans tired of the free parking mess on commercial streets actually aren’t “pissed off about paying for parking on Sunday.”

HOW MANY? ENOUGH TO SUPPORT ADVERTISING ON THE STREETSBLOG? NOPE! THAT CAN”T BE TOO “MANY,” HUH? OH, THAT REMINDS ME, FORK OVER $60K TO ME RIGHT NOW SO THAT I CAN CONTINUE TO SUSTAIN MY UNSUSTAINABLE BLOG!

But in a sign that you don’t need a parking PhD to get why meters make streets work better for everyone, SF Weekly’s readership seemed to welcome the end of free parking on Sundays.

OH A PHD IN PARKING! IF ONLY!

SF’s dysfunctional free Sunday parking regime was a burden to everyone who had to circle the block endlessly for a spot, everyone who had to put up with commercial streets clogged with traffic, noise, and exhaust, and all the merchants who lost business because of the lack of parking turnover.

SO NOW IT”S EASY TO PARK ON SUNDAYS? REALLY? I DON’T THINK SO. PERHAPS ALL THE SPIN COMING FROM SFTMA MUNI DPT SFPARK MIGHT NOT BE 100% ACCURATE? GEE, PERHAPS ORGANIZED RELIGION HAD A LITTLE SOMETHING TO DO WITH FREE SUNDAY PARKING BACK IN THE DAY AND, COME TO THINK OF IT, THESE DAYS (UP UNTIL NOON, ANYWAY) AS WELL. MMMM… AND MAYBE SFMTA MUNI DPT SFPARK WON’T BE CHARGING “ENUF” IN CERTAIN AREAS TO GARNER ALL THE BENEFITS THEY ARE PROMISING. WE’LL SEE….

All told, free Sunday parking was much more “oppressive” than paying a price to use scarce street space for automobile storage.

SING IT, PREACHER MAN!

That’s why supporters of SFPark started their own petition encouraging its expansion. It’s a point we make repeatedly on Streetsblog, and hopefully the editors at SF Weekly got the message coming from their readers.

There was no mention of the driver’s speed.

UH, GEE, THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE DRIVER’S CURRENT IRS TAX COMPLIANCE NEITHER, RIGHT? SO WHAT? WASN’T THIS PED 100% AT FAULT FOR HIS OWN DEATH? I THINK SO.

(The driver was only mentioned to note that he or she was “very cooperative.”)

WELL, WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?
