FLASHBACK: Recalling When Hipsters of the Lower Haight Tried to Own and Operate an AMC Pacer for a Laugh or Two

Thursday, February 11th, 2016

This was the scene on Haight Street back in the aughts (and back when CWNevius still lived in the East Bay, where he belongs and where he’d be happier) – four urban youts inside of one AMC Pacer:

This thing was advertised as the “first wide small car,” and maybe it was. (Back in the day, certainly, it was wide enough for the Sandwich King.)

(Perhaps Google should have used these cars to carry their Street View sensors around? Compared to brand-new, bright red hybrid Priuseses, a fleet of old Pacers would have attracted less attention from John Law.)

But look, Gentle Reader, they loved Pacers in France, for some reason:

All right, let’s say au revoir to les hipsters de Haight, seen after they’d navigated through the already failed Octavia Boulevard “urbanist”/urbonaut experiment/ongoing fiasco:

I’ll point out that sometimes it’s the unregistered sex offenders…

MUNI Bus Ad of the Week: “Discover Doctors Convieniently [sic] Located at the Intersection of Personalized and Excellent?”

Monday, March 17th, 2014

[UPDATE: Oh, and as Reader Andrew notes, “convieniently” isn’t spelled proper.]

From Diggity* Health Medical Group:

That’s funny ’cause most doctors I know are inconveniently located at the intersection of Croesus and Mammon, am I right, GF?

Anyway, this ad’s a bit wordy for a MUNI bus, IMO.

Now MUNI’s Running Ads That Support UberX Taxi Service? Apparently, Uber is “Better Faster Cheaper”

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Here’s what the SFMTA is saying this week, that UberX is “better faster cheaper” than SFMTA’s regular taxis:

And here’s the SFMTA’s other ad on this topic:

“All right, here’s the new side-of-the-bus ad from our SFMTA, the slowest large transit agency in American history (And I’m srsly on that one. Can you name me one slower? OK then.)

“Do You Know What You’re Getting Into?”

By the numbers:

1. Trained drivers with extensive training [And people say bloggers talk funny!]

2. Proper insurance [A low blow! But yes, SFMTA, you have a valid point here.]

3. Your support of local San Francisco drivers. [Some yes, some not]

4. Driver background checks. [Meh.]

5. Safety and meter inspection [Meh.]

6. Formal process for dispute resolution [Meh.]

OK, now how old are you, SFMTA? Not too old but old enough to have been in charge of this:

Was this SFMTA-licensed driver trained with extensive training to, IDK, investigate fires before people die?

Apparently not. How many fares have Lyft drivers killed?

Speaking of which, what about  the sad case of Julie Christine Day, who was last seen alive leaving the Bubble Lounge on Montgomery?

One of your vaunted, extensively-trained, fully licensed and insured drivers started up his fully-inspected meter and then immediately set about murdering his fare, right, SFMTA?

So, what the Hell?

All right, SFMTA, you might have some good points about Lyft and Sidecar and Uber (look for the orange rear-view window cozies, I’m srsly) and the illegal limos and the out-of-town taxi drivers making illegal pickups in the 415.

But you are biased by your 50% tax on taxi medallions, among other things.

So let’s mark this effort as yet another failed initiative from the SFMTA.

Here’s the Latest Controversial SFMTA MUNI Bus Ad: “THIS IS ISLAMIC APARTHEID” – Uh, You’re Losing This Game, SFMTA

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

Via the District 5 Blog comes the news

On It Goes

All the deets:

“After months of procrastination and dhimmitude, the San Francisco MTA finally posted our Islamic apartheid ads on city buses (above are the first of the pics). They have been running the libelous “Israel is an apartheid state” ad without hesitation (or substantiation), mind you. I, on the other hand, had to provide numerous links and references to back up my ads. Why me and not them? Because I was stating fact, but the Jew-haters were merely expressing their opinion. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

San Francisco turned over the revenue from our ads to Muslim groups to study the effect AFDI ads had on the Muslim community, I kid you not. But they kept the revenue from the Jew-hatred ads.

We will educate the American people despite the difficulty, despite the obstacles.”

Speaking of Offensive MUNI Bus Ads, Check Out This Campaign from San Francisco’s DAVID CLAY JEWELERS

Add this one to the list of crimes from DAVID KAY JEWELERS:

“You won’t get jealous when your friend gets the newer smaller version”

(Oh, and BTW, the offensive ad here isn’t “anti-gay” not at all.

To say so is ignorant.

But it is anti other things, I’ll grant you that.)

In closing, diamonds are horrible. Get anything else but a diamond. People will figure this out soon enough and the worthless piece of rock on your finger will be even more worthless a couple decades from now.

And more importantly, it will be seen by others as worthless.

Oh well.
