The Scary, Batlike Hummingbirds of Golden Gate Park – And This Other One has a Costume for Halloween 2015

Friday, October 30th, 2015

This little critter startled me the other day, as it’s in the same bush where I saw a roof rat a few weeks back.

Dese boids generally have an all-carbs diet, but sometimes they need a little protein. This the last thing some spiders see:

Sort of looks like a bat to me.

But now it’s time for costumes. This little feller’s mantle is saying, “Hey ladies, look at me!”

(Hey, you know, speaking of scary, area Republican Ron Conway, through his interest in Pinterest, has made more money off of this shot than I have. Taken more than a decade ago with a $4500 camera and $4500 worth of glass it was. I’m in the wrong “business.”)

Happy Halloween!

Boy, Our SF “City Family” is Really Counting on Stealing the Oakland Warriors from Oakland – “LET’S GROW WARRIORS?”

Monday, August 3rd, 2015

Is there anything wrong with leaving the Golden State Warriors in Oakland?

Anyway, here’s the scene in Golden Gate Park – I can’t imagine this arboreal/sports clothing line program “makes money” for our City Family, but rich like having fun too, and this is one way for them to do it:

What’s next, “Let’s Grow Niners?”

Cherry Blossom Viewing Picnics Continue on into April Near the Japanese Tea Garden, Rain or Shine

Monday, April 6th, 2015

First is was all like this, in early April 2015 across the street from Friend Gate of the Strybing Arboretum (which used to be popular until the $7 paywall went up):

These people were optimistically setting up in the rain. But then, weather started “improving” – the rain stopped and the fog came back and you could actually see Sutro Tower a little bit:

And then, when you pass by again, it’s a full-on party under El Sol:

Right? After all, these blossoms aren’t going to watch themselves.

See you next year!

A Graffiti Artist Took a Dim View of All the Rules at the Former Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Of course, you gotta have rules:

Strybing used to be free but now there’s a paywall, except the place still takes up our tax money, which doesn’t really make sense.

The crew that runs this place wants the former Strybing to be a “world-class” facility, whatever that means.

The crew that runs this place likes plants but not people, cause people cause problems.

Which is fine, they want to have a paywall, but why are we still supporting this place, I don’t get it.

Houses of the Holy – What are These Stones from an 800-Year-Old Spanish National Monument Doing in Golden Gate Park?

Friday, February 6th, 2015

The answer is nothing much.

All the deets here and here and here.

Here’s a stonemason’s mark, the cross you can see in the middle:

This is sort of kind of what it looked like, back 800 years ago.

These stones shouldn’t just be sitting around Golden Gate Park, but that’s where they’ll stay…

The Only Thing Sadder Than the Street Corner Christmas Trees of January is This Sad-Sack Lebanese Cedar in GGP

Friday, February 6th, 2015

So I see this tree in Golden Gate Park and I’m like, “What is you? Is you a tree?”

If you want your own Cedrus libani Pendula, just cut up a Christmas tree and throw all the branches in a pile, cause that’s pretty much what this bush thing looks like:

I’m amazed.

This is What the San Francisco Tourist Agency Does with Our Money, Our Tens of Millions

Monday, May 26th, 2014

It sends youthful orange-shirted attractivas with iPads out to approach tourists in Golden Gate Park.

Feigned excitement: “Oh it’s your birthday tomorrow!?”

We can’t afford to operate the Strybing Arboretum without soaking the tourists, but we can afford this?

What’s going on, SFGov. Do you do everything a special interest tells you to do?

The Last Fox I Saw in Golden Gate Park – This One was Either Poisoned or Run Over by a Car on Crossover Drive

Monday, July 15th, 2013

At the time, employee(s) / gardeners of the former Strybing Arboretum were feeding this particular critter from cans of dog food they would carry around for the purpose,

Also at the time, poisoned pellets were put out for “vermin.” One theory is that this vixen ate the pellets and died.

Also at the time, there was a report that a fox was run over on nearby Crossover Drive. But of course that could have been a coyote IRL, or it could have been a different fox.

Anyway, this was the last fox I saw in GGP.
