OMG, Soccer! It’s the FA Cup Trophy at the British Consulate – Manchester City vs. Club America at AT&T Park This Saturday!

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

What’s this? AT&T Park is going to host its first international soccer match in a half decade this Saturday, July 16, 2011? Well that’s news to me!

Anyway, this was the scene today at the British Consulate, where Manchester City representative Gary Hopkins showed off the hard-won Football Association Challenge Cup Trophy to Acting British Consul General Mary Gilbert .

See? (If you want to see this historic trophy for yourself, it will be at the Union Square NikeTown sometime on Friday, July 15th.)

So it will be Manchester City vs. Club America at 5:00 PM at AT&T this Saturday. Get your tickets here.

“International soccer powerhouses; England’s Manchester City and Mexico’s Club America are set to play each other in San Francisco, Calif. on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 5PM PST at AT&T Park as part of the World Football Challenge.

With no shortage of funding, Manchester City (CITY) boasts one of the most star-studded rosters of any league after being owned by the ambitious Abu Dhabi Royal family. CITY is set to take Europe by storm this upcoming season after successfully defeating bitter rival, Manchester United, on their way to conquering the English FA Cup and finishing third in the English Premier League, thus providing automatic qualification in to the European Champions League, the most elite soccer competition on the planet.

Mexico’s elite Club America is one of the most storied and legendary clubs south of the border with followers numbering in the millions, in Mexico City alone. This is truly an outstanding matchup for all soccer aficionados around the Bay.”

Mayoral Communications Director Christine Falvey Denies Edwin Lee Attended a “Re-Elect Ed Happy Hour” Last Week

Monday, July 11th, 2011

In response to this post from earlier today, Director of Mayor Edwin M. Lee’s Communications Office Christine Falvey comments:

“The caption must have been a joke. He has not attended any such events. The photo was taken at the Giants game last week.”

So that explains that, I suppose.

Anyway, that was the answer, here was the question:

“Is this photo (or its caption) newsworthy? I don’t know.

But certainly, the fact that Mayor Edwin Lee was present at a “re-elect Ed happy hour” before last week’s 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres is news to me.

Los tres caballeros (Spanish for “bros”) y nuestro alcalde “provisional” Ed Lee:

If you think, at this late date, that the prospects for Ed Lee’s re-election weren’t front and center in the conversation The Powers That Be had last January, then you are horribly, horribly naive.

The fact that things were all mapped out for Ed Lee seven months ago makes the happy talk from The Nevius and King Randy Shaw I of the Tenderloin a little grating.

Anyway, if I were in Ed’s shoes, I’d shut down all the recent Run Ed Run talk by saying, “No, I won’t run for re-election – that would be dishonest.”

Just saying, caballero.”

The Worst MUNI Bus Ad Ever: “Fed Up With the Price of a Fill Up?”

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Hey, SFMTA! Do you realize that you’re a national joke?

‘Cause, I don’t know, sometimes it seems you don’t realize you’re a national joke.

Just saying.

OK, work with me here, you’re beautiful, you’re gorgeous, you’re a San Francisco Giants* fan, right, and you don’t care what it costs to park near AT&T Park, oh no, what has you fazed is the cost of the four quid worth of petrol you had to expend to get to the game, so look astonished, go ahead, oh hey Margie, could you stencil the word “gasoline” onto our 1960′s-style gas pump, oh never mind, we’ll just add it in later in post, OK, babe, you’re giving me a 3 right now, let’s make it a 9, that’s it, look more astonished, more, that’s it, hold it, hold it. Click! That’s a rap people, I’ll see you at the after party:

How much did we pay for this ad, I wonder…

*Or something, I still haven’t figured out which baseball team the talent supports. Does the M stand for MUNI? Oh, what’s that? The SF Giants might not want to be associated with a hated, loser organization like MUNI? Maybe…

Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of species. Somewhere between science and legend TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential.

UFL Football League Struggles to Pay the Bills, But Will the NFL Strike Help Paul Pelosi’s Sacramento Mountain Lions?

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Here are all the deets since the UFL‘s California Redwoods started playing professional at AT&T Park in 2009.

Our “local” team has upped and moved to Sacramento – they’re called the Mountain Lions now. Oh well. At least the uniforms have a dignified, old-school look, so that should please area writer Joe Eskenazi.

You’d think the enormous squad of cheerleaders would be called the Kittens, or the Pumettes, or maybe even the Cougars, but no, they’re called the Lady Lions. See?

Anywho, elements of the UFL, as you might imagine, are having trouble paying the bills. Uh oh. (Hey you know what happens to a McDonalds what doesn’t pay its employees as agreed? Bad tings, that’s what happens. But if the UFL doesn’t doesn’t make sure that its employees get paid, well that’s A-OK, huh?)

But maybe the 2011 NFL lockout will result in an increase in talent tout de suite?

Stay tooned…

Thousands of Disappointed U.S. Soccer Fans Turned Away from Civic Center

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

I don’t know, I think they could have figured out a way to have Pride Weekend and the World Cup at the same place at the same time this A.M.

Or, in other words:

How the hell is there no large venue showing this match?”

They were still setting up this stage when the action started in South Africa:

Fans forced indoors tried to make the best of it, craning their necks as if they were in the front row of a Metreon movie theatre:

(Of course, batting practice precluded AT&T Park’s JumboTron from showing the contest.)

Fans arriving at Civic Center this morning were told to go to “some bar” to catch the match. One fan announced that he was “mega-bummed.”

Oh well…

Sir Paul McCartney to Play AT&T Park on July 10, 2010! Tickets on Sale May 24th

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Up and Coming Paul McCartney just can’t stay away from our sports stadia, right? A mere 15,971 days after playing the ‘Stick, he’s back to play the ‘Booth.

From Barbara Koh’s About.com comes the exciting news:

Paul McCartney has announced two new performance dates, the first at San Francisco’s very own AT&T Park on Saturday July 10th, and then at the Rio Tinto stadium in Salt Lake City on Tuesday July 13th, as part of his ‘Up and Coming’ 2010 tour. Keeping with his headline-making special concerts over the last few years, the tour will see the iconic star and his band play unique venues, places and locations; new cities he’s never played and familiar markets he’s not visited for a while.”

Get that? He’s not visited “for a while.” I”ll check you on that, good buddy.

(Did you know he was also in a band _before_ Wings?)

See you there!

“The July 10th concert date at AT&T Park will be Paul’s first performance within the City of San Francisco since The Beatles’ last concert tour appearance – at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966.
