The Vanishing Car Show Babes of the San Francisco International Auto Show

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Just as San Francisco has experienced the demise of construction workers, it’s also lost its car show model babes. Things just aren’t what they used to be at the San Francisco International Auto Show, for whatever reason.

Maybe in Europe or Asia they still have something like the Bundy Bounce, but you’re not going to find anything like that at the big family-oriented car show in San Francisco, longstanding stereotypes of car shows notwithstanding. FYI.

Here’s what’s left of that bygone era.

The continuously-improving Kaizen-ettes (改善ettes - Jordan, Marisa and Laura) sing the praises of this 2010 Toyota Prius:

Talking to no one at all about the Chrysler 300 sedan:

That’s it.

Also, no beefcake (beefcake!). Maybe they had something like that ten years ago, but not anymore.

Photos of the 2009 San Francisco International Auto Show at Moscone Center

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

The 52nd Annual San Francisco International Auto Show continues ’til Wednesday, December 2nd down at Moscone Center. It’s eight bucks, why not check it out?

The joint is sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle - here are their photos from Wednesday night. And here’s an annotated gallery from Ryan W over at Yelp. And here are the babes.

Hands up – who here has a Lexus? The SEMA boys painted this IS350 using the flattest finish known to Man. That’s not primer, it’s paint:

I think the South Koreans are arriving a little late at the boaty chromed-up car party, but anyway, here’s your giant 2010 Hyundai Equus – ask about their bullet-proof model:

Colma, CA is a Land of Fog and Cemeteries and Shut-Down Car Dealerships

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Here’s Colma (nee Lawndale until 1941), CA, the West’s #1 necropolis. Why does it have its own BART station and musical? No one knows.

But what it does have includes car dealerships (both kinds – the dead and the living dead), fog, and, of course, cemeteries. Truly, it is the Land of Wind and Ghosts.

A look down Serramonte Boulevard.

Not too long ago, Tom Hanks got his giant black Lexus from a dealership on this street, but all the Lexuseses are gone now. Will they return? No one knows.

See you there, on the next dreaded sunny day.

San Francisco’s Best Parallel Parker of 2009 Has Got to be This Guy

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Even with a spotter, trying to park this trailered rig on the left side of Fell Street, well that can’t be a picnic. The very prospect of thinking about which way to turn the stearing wheel gives me a headache.

Didn’t see how this one turned out, but just for the bold attempt, and considering the degree of difficulty, this man deserves to be San Francisco Parallel Parker of the Year, 2009.

Arrest #49 for Local Burglar – Baited Car in Golden Gate Park Proves Irresistable

Friday, July 31st, 2009

What items tempt you the most when you scan parked cars for Objects in Plain View  - would it be a laptop computer, an iPod, maybe a backpack? Well, be careful, cause when the SFPD baits cars for sting operations in Golden Gate Park, they sometimes use all three. (It’s almost like entrapment, or something. So tempting these parcels are, next thing you know, it’s smashy smashy!)

From the Richmond District Blog comes a sneak peek of Richmond Station Police Captain Richard Corriea’s next weekly update for the Richmond District Police Community Police Forum. Read an entire entry below.

Is this a parking lot, a freeway, or Golden Gate Park’s MLK Drive near the Inner Sunset on a recent Friday? Click to expand:

IMG_7201 copy

Yes, it’s MLK near the Friend Gate of Strybing Arboretum. Perhaps the cars huddle together for safety?

Here’s why:

“On July 25, 2009 Richmond [District] officers working in plain clothes staked out a car at Middle Drive and Bowling Green Drive in Golden Gate Park. There were several items of value in the car, including, a backpack, computer and an IPOD. The officers knew from experience that an auto burglar would find the car an appealing target. Indeed, several hours into the stakeout an individual burglarized the car, and he was immediately arrested. A subsequent search of the suspect turned up evidence from a theft committed nearby earlier in the day and narcotics. The suspect, who has been arrested forty-nine times, including thirty-one times for felonies, was booked for burglary, possession of stolen property, theft and a narcotics violation. This individual is likely responsible for several auto burglaries daily.”

How many car windows do you have to break to get a rap sheet this long - hundreds, thousands?

San Francisco’s Presidio – National Park or Lamborghini Proving Grounds?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The answer is this – a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

Look for this black Lambo barking around the Pacific Heights part of the Presidio.

Or, if the driver gets into trouble on an Army-engineered, seriously reverse camber curve, look for this car among the Eucalpytuseses, and then on the pages of WreckedExotics.com.

Now I know it doesn’t make sense to drive around in your Lambo on the gridded streets of regular San Francisco, but it also doesn’t make sense to aimlessly drive around the winding streets of the Presidio neither. If the Eucalyptuseses don’t get you then the Federales will.

You’re not on what they call a “sustainable journey,” just saying.

The Unregistered Lamborghinis of San Francisco County

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The thing about San Francisco is that it’s crawling with oddly registered or unregistered exoticars. The kind of California license plates that come on Toyotas or Hondas seem to have a hard time sticking onto the rears of Ferraris and Lamborghinis in this town.

This aging Lambo Gallardo (the Spanish word gallardo translates into “gallant,” and from Italian into “striking”) typifies the breed. No license plates, but the infamous get-out-of-jail-free C.H.P. 11-99 Foundation license plate holder, well, natch, you’ve got to have one of those, right?

And the radar detector hanging in the windshield, that’s just the icing on the cake.

Parallel Parking in San Francisco – The Exact Wrong Way to Do It

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Now take a look at this full-size Chevrolet Silverado work truck parked on the Streets of San Francisco (a Quinn Martin Production). The driver literally had about one inch of maneuvering space fore and aft, so it was fairly obvious he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Whose fault is it? Either the driver of the Subaru wagon on the left or the 3-series BMW on the right. The onus is on you, the parker, to make sure others can get out, right?

In this case, the Chevy owner gave up and the BMW left a few hours later. It was replaced by a MINI Cooper, whose owner actually checked to see if he left enough space.

How to Break into Cars on the Streets of San Francisco

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Of course you already carry around a small shard of NGK (日本特殊陶業株式会社 aka Nippon Tokusyu Tōgyō Kabushiki-gaisha) high-temperature spark plug porcelain ceramic insulator to easily break windows, but how do you determine which parked car has worthwhile booty? Simple, just crane your neck and look into each car as you walk down the sidewalk.

You’ll never know what you’ll find.

As seen on Golden Gate Avenue, checking every last car on this block and the next one too:

NB: Don’t try this in the Richmond District, else you might make the Noteworthy Arrests section of the Richmond District Police Community Relations Forum newsletter and then end up in the hoosegow.

The Reason Why San Francisco Loves the ForTwo Smart Car: Easy Parking

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Even a Mini Cooper would have trouble parallel parking in this space, but a red fortwo from smart had no trouble at all. Now the driver has full access to the Clement street shopping district. And it appears to be parked legally, unlike some other smarts in town these days that park 90 degrees the wrong way.

Hurray!

Look for the fortwo in the new movie release The Pink Panther II, starring Steve Martin.

Base-model MSRP is now a bit over $12k – maybe it’s for you.
