Did We Just Hit Peak Auto? – New DMV Stats Show Fewer Registered Vehicles in SF for the First Time Since 2011 – But Licensed Drivers in SF are Up

Friday, March 16th, 2018

Here’s your background, from a year ago.

And here are your stats for 2016:

And here are your stats for 2017, released just today:

So that’s about a half a percentage decrease for registered AUTOS as well as all registered VEHICLES from 2016 to 2017.

And here are your licensed driver numbers for San Francisco County for the past five years, also just released:

That’s about a 1% increase, year over year.

So there you have it – instead of a relatively steady increase averaging 7000 or so automobiles per year, we’ve just had a decrease of about 1900 autos, for whatever reason.

Perhaps 2016 will end up being Peak Auto for San Francisco – we’ll see.

Here It Is, the Delightfully-Named “Auto Drive,” in the Inner Sunset – Finally a Road Just for Car Drivers – And Also in SF: “Automobile Drive,” Somewhere

Google it yourself: Auto Dr SF

I first noticed this odd notation when I was on one of my bikes, and I thought, “I can’t go through there, not on a bike.” But then later on I actually went through the thing, inside sort of an auto anyway. This Drive is kind of narrow. Seems more like an Alley to me:

I’d love to see a street sign for it.

Au revoir, L’Avenue du Auto:

And yes, this is official:

Say, is “Automobile Drive” the same thing? One thinks so, but one doesn’t know.

All right, happy motoring, in your quadricycles!

I guess they do car stuff now.

All right, on to new business: Is my tummy Tab™️ soda refreshed?

Twin Peaks Update: How Things Look Since the Most Recent Murder and Before the Nighttime Road Shutdown

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

Well, here’s your background – just keep reading down.

Photographer Ed French was killed in July 2017.

And here’s the latest:

SF Leaders Consider Proposal to Close Twin Peaks at Nighttime – By Terry McSweeney

(Of course, people would still go up atop Twin Peaks, but not with their cars, so that would certainly lower the SFPD / RPD workload.)

Here’s where one of the gates could go, on Twin Peaks Blvd. The 30 MPH speed limit seems a tad on the high side, but there you go:

And here’s where the SFPD hangs out – you can pretty much see everybody who comes and goes from this spot:

And here’s your greeting these days:

Repeating endlessly:

Speaking of which, here’s your broken auto glass report. I think I saw strong evidence of at least three break-ins last time I was up there:

This is quite an improvement from earlier this summer, when all the broken glass really stood out on the newly laid macadam. So a rate of about 1000 break ins per year has dropped a lot, due to the heightened SFPD presence.

The popo aren’t up there now as much as in August 2017, but they’re still up there.

As are your shutterbugs:

All over, actually:

Hey, did this woman sleep overnight on the less-trafficked, “car-free” side of this hill? IDK. She looked like a sleepyhead when I saw her one morning:

So there you have it. I can understand why it’s easier for SFGov to just throw its hands up and say, “Screw it, let’s put up some gates on TPB.”

As for whether that’s the best course of action, well, that’s up to you, Gentle Reader.

Old Mercedes Benzes Never Die, They Just End Up Getting Dissected by George Washington High Students – Auto Shop Class Lives!

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Never thought I’d see this – old Mercedes Benz cars parked on the lawn out in front of Geo Wash High in the Outer Richmond, with a grease paint obituary written on the windshield:

Is Auto Shop Class a thing for high schoolers in 2017? Hell to the yes.

I took shop in high school, but that was then and this is now. Generally, guys took shop and gals took typing, or home ec., I think, but there were exceptions. (I should have taken typing instead oh well.)

(What’s sad is that yes, you can keep an old Benz on the road, but it’ll cost you. Imagine if the owners of these rides had opted for something like a 1990 Lexus LS400 – they would have saved money up front and down the road. Oh well.)

Anyway, I says to myself, I says does GW offer shop, and guess what, it does.

These cars have lived, they are dying, but, like Nux, they will live again, in the memories of today’s teens.

Something New: Checkpoint Charlie Atop Twin Peaks – SFPD “Community Policing” of a Sort

Saturday, July 22nd, 2017

I’ve been up to Twin Peaks seven days out of the past eight – this is the first I’ve seen anything like this:

There was an SFPD presence up here even before the killing of last week, but it has stepped up quite a bit now.

First it was all like this:

And then it was all like this, with the Barrelhead Brewhouse supposing to go in:

But the Barrelhead, she went in on Fulton near Masonic, leaving 834 838 an empty hulk, for the most part, for like a half-decade. Oh, I guess California Parking tried to make a go of it a few years back as well.

But now, one looks and sees this:

One Googles and, of course, one sees that Socketsite, San Francisco Real Estate Tips, Trends and the Local Scoop, is all over this bidness, with a fresh entry.

Multitasking: Commemorating the 4th of July and Your Busted Car Windows at the Same Time

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

Don’t look at reported incidents, just look at real life.

Anyway, the silvery piece of cardboard looked white, so this driver was in the spirit of July 4th 2016:

Some are just giving up fixing their windows, it seems, in this year especially. Most passersby will not try to get into your car of course, and the ones who do just might have done it anyway, so what’s the point in hurrying up and repairing the damage today, or this week, or this year?

Cf. this long-term fix. See? Much less festive, but actually a pretty good job:
