The Stated Objectives of the “Masonic Avenue Street Design Study” vs. Reality

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Hey, it’s the Masonic Avenue Street Design Study:

“About the Project – The primary goal of the Masonic Avenue Street Design Study is to identify how Masonic Avenue between Geary Boulevard and Fell Street can safely and efficiently accommodate the needs of all roadway users, including but not limited to … motorists.”

ALL RIGHT, EXACTLY HOW DOES THIS PROJECT “ACCOMMODATE THE NEEDS” OF “MOTORISTS?” OH, NOT AT ALL? THOUGHT SO. MOVING ON.

Objectives:

1. Engage representatives of all constituencies within the community who would be impacted by changes to Masonic Avenue…

ALL RIGHT, WHICH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE “MOTORIST” “CONSTITUENCY” WERE “ENGAGED?” ANY AT ALL? YOU KNOW, THE OCTAVIA BOULEVARD PEOPLE “ENGAGED” MOTORISTS AS FAR AWAY AS MONTEREY BOULEVARD, OUT THERE WITH CLIPBOARDS AND EVERYTHING. DID THE MASONIC AVENUE PEOPLE DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT? OH NO.

2. Improve transit operation.

THIS PROJECT WILL UNIMPROVE TRANSIT OPERATION ON AND AROUND MASONIC – THERE’S NO QUESTION ABOUT THAT. IT’S GOING TO SLOW DOWN THE BUSES THAT USE MASONIC, INCLUDING THE OCCASIONAL #5 FULTON AND #21 HAYES.

3. Improve pedestrian and non-motorized access to transit.

SO TRANSIT USERS WILL HAVE “BETTER ACCESS” TO REDUCED BUS SERVICE? I DON’T GET THE BETTER ACCESS PART – YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT A BUS STOP? ALSO, WHAT’S “MOTORIZED ACCESS TO TRANSIT?”

4. Increase the safety of pedestrian crossings.

YOU KNOW, THE PRIOR PROJECT MANAGER IS ON THE RECORD AS STATING THAT THIS KIND OF THING IS BAD TO DO LIKE NOW BECAUSE IT WOULD HURT THE CAUSE OF PUSHING THE ENTIRE PROJECT THROUGH. KIND OF SAD, REALLY.

5. Increase motorist compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

UH, WHAT, WITH TREES? IF I WANTED TO INCREASE COMPLIANCE WITH TRAFFIC LAWS, I’D JACK THE SPEED LIMIT UP TO 40 MPH. NOW, THAT WOULD HAVE SOME SIDE EFFECTS, BUT IT CERTAINLY WOULD REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF SPEEDING, RIGHT? OR, HAVING HOURS-LONG TRAFFIC JAM UPS DURING THE MORNING AND EVENING DRIVES WOULD REDUCE SPEEDING, IS THAT WHAT YOU’RE GETTING AT?

6. Reduce the number of vehicular collisions, especially those involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

HOW? BY PLANTING TREES? WE’LL SEE. HEY DIDN’T THE RECENT OCTAVIA BOULEVARD / MEDIAN PROJECT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF VEHICULAR COLLISIONS ON OCTAVIA? YES IT DID. HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN THAT?

7. Support neighborhood vitality by creating a more inviting and accommodating public realm.

BY PUTTING IN A MEDIAN AND PLANTING TREES? SO, LET’S TAX AMERICA, CALIFORNIA, AND SAN FRANCISCO TO CREATE A “REALM” ON 3000 FEET WORTH OF STREET PRIMARILY FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE WEALTHY PROPERTY OWNERS AND PRIVATE SCHOOL(S) WHAT ARE ON THE STREET? ALL RIGHT.

Poorly-Designed Octavia “Boulevard” Proves Too Much for Mercedes-Driving Mom – Plows into NIMBY Green

Monday, December 31st, 2012

To the right of this accident scene is Octavia Boulevard.

And to the left, a block away, is Octavia Street.

And in the middle, you’ll see NIMBY Green with a newish Mercedes Benz CLS sitting on top.

Via ciprofloxacin – click to expand

You see, Octavia used to be a regular old street until Redevelopment (a bad idea from the 20th century) and the failed Octavia “Boulevard” experiment (a bad idea from the 21st century) came along.

Anyway. this is what results when “activists” are valued more than traffic engineers

SHN “Book of Mormon” Ticket Lottery a Huge Success – The Only Way to Get a Seat Now – Here’s the Video

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Here are the rules of the game.

Here is what the lottery looks like:

I’d say that you’d have had a 10% chance of winning on Preview Night.

Realize that the scalpers and scam artists are going crazy right about now, so paying $29 for a seat what’s worth north of $290 IRL might strike you as a good deal.

Get lucky!

OMG, You Have No Idea How Hard It Is to Get Book of Mormon Tickets – Your Last Best Chance? Daily Ticket Lottery

Monday, November 19th, 2012

This is it.

This is the biggest Broadway roadshow to hit town since forever.

Book of Mormon will play at our Curran Theatre from November 27th to December 30th 2012 and then it will be gone.

There is no way that the run of this smash musical comedy will be extended as the BoM crew will start up in Portland the day after New Year’s.

So here’s what you need to know:

1. This thing is going to be huge – everybody’s going to be talking about it. You know, because it’s ”the best musical of this century” per the New York Times ‘n stuff.

2. You want to go to this show whether you know it or not, even if you’re not into Broadway. Yes, Book of Mormon is profane, but it’s also “an atheist’s love letter to religion.”

3. Tickets are beyond sold out. So the scalpers and the scam artists are going to have a field day.

Check it, from the craigslist:

So that’s hundreds of dollars per seat for tickets what originally cost way less than $100.

So here’s what you do, you show up at the box office on Geary two hours early and enter the lottery.

At $29 a ticket for the winners, this is a steal.

If you don’t want to go through this kind of hassle  day after day, then don’t do it because you are not a true fan,  (The  SHN / BoM people are making you jump through hoops for a reason, don’t you know.)

Now I’ll tell you, when they did this for Rent, back in the day, they lotteried away the two front rows for $19 a piece.

Good times.

Of course the angle was sort of ridiculous and you would see things you weren’t meant to see, but this was quite nice for students of the theatre.

(I don’t know which seats lottery winners will get – they might not get to sit right up front.)

So, have at it.

You Can’t Win If Don’t Play.

Our Schools Win Too.*

PRE-SHOW LOTTERY ANNOUNCED! THE BOOK OF MORMON Lottery Ticket Policy:

THE BOOK OF MORMON will conduct a pre-show lottery at the box office, making a limited number of tickets available at $29 apiece; cash only. This lottery will be held prior to every performance.

Entries will be accepted at the SHN Curran Theatre box office beginning two hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. One and a half hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $29 each.

Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability.

Nine 2011 Tony Awards® say it’s the Best Musical of the Year. Vogue says, “It’s the funniest musical of all time.” And The New York Times says, “It’s the best musical of this century.” It’s THE BOOK OF MORMON, the Broadway phenomenon from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez. The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart calls it “A crowning achievement. So good, it makes me angry.” Contains explicit language.

For more information please visit www.bookofmormonthemusical.com.

If you come across any website other than shnsf.com claiming to sell THE BOOK OF MORMON tickets for the San Francisco engagement, buyer beware! SHN has no way of validating, or replacing tickets that have been purchased through any website other than shnsf.com. We cannot seat or refund you for an invalidated ticket.

If you have any questions, please call 1-888-746-1799 before purchasing.

*Oh, that’s just a saying – our schools won’t actually win.

Today is Your Day to Get Tickets for Book of Mormon at the SHN Curran Theatre – American Express Only – 10AM Start

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

The Book of Mormon, the so-called “best musical of this century,” is coming to town November 27 – December 30th, 2012 at our SHN Curran Theatre on Geary in Union Square.

This thing is going to sell out with extreme prejudice due to:

1. All those recent Tony awards, including Best Musical 2011;

2. Extremely good reviews;

3. A relatively small theatre (The Curran is big but the Orpheum and the Golden Gate are bigger); and

4.  A short, five-week engagement – this show will bug out of here for Portlandia on Dec. 30th, 2012 NO MATTER WHAT, no extensions

And for the first time in my life, I can articulate a reason to have an AMEX card. The remaining decent-priced good seats at (those not already promised to SHN Members) will get sold today starting at 10:00 AM.

Choose or lose…

The Second-Best Bay Area-Related Press Release of 2012: Elisabeth Thieriot Manages to “Survive” “False Accusations”

Monday, July 30th, 2012

Remember this bit from earlier in the month?

Area Whacko Elisabeth Thieriot Hosted a Mayan Spiritual Leader in Tiburon and She Wants You To Know ALL About It

Well, she’s back.

But first, a little background. It seems the world will end on December 21, 2012:

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on 21 December 2012. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none have been accepted by mainstream scholarship. A New Age interpretation of this transition is that this date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, or Earth’s collision with an object such as a black hole, a passing asteroid, or a planet called “Nibiru“.

OK fine.

Area whacko Elisabeth Thieriot is working on, in her words, “saving humanity” so you gots to listen to her.

(Especially when UHF Channel 36 cuts into a Friends rerun on a Sunday afternoon.)

Deets below.

And please remember, you only have 144 days left before you’re going to have to KYAG:

SAN FRANCISCO, July 27, 2012 — MBL Media Productions, an Emmy Award-winning, full-service film and video production company, is proud to announce the premiere of “It’s A Red Carpet Life…The Mayan Prophecy,” where host Marybeth La Motte will discuss the concept and production process behind the filming of “Decoding B’aqtun.” The documentary, filmed in Guatemala in April 2012, uncovers rarely seen Mayan artifacts from the sites of Tikal and Quirigua, Guatemala.

In the episode airing this Sunday, July 29, at 5:25pm PDT on KICU TV36 (directly after “FRIENDS”), La Motte interviews the Head Elder of the Mayan Council, Apolinario Chile Pixtun, and Elisabeth Thieriot, President, Elicosma Productions and also the film’s financier and executive producer. “We encourage viewers to tune in and find out about ‘Decoding B’aqtun,’” La Motte shares. “The unique opportunity to learn more about the Mayan calendar and culture has been a rewarding experience for our team and we can’t wait to share the insight with our audience.”

In his interview with La Motte, Pixtun explains why the Mayan culture designed its calendar thousands of years ago and how it holds true today. He also recaps the development of a substantial friendship with Thieriot and his respect for her concentrated effort in the face of adversity throughout production.

In the second half of the interview, Thieriot explains the Mayan prophecies of 2012, clarifies what society has achieved in the last 5000 years, and gives a sneak peek into what the movie discloses about the Mayan calendar. She also candidly discusses production hurdles and surviving false accusations and blackmail from a previous film’s production in Mexico.

Gee, How Out-of-Touch is Randy Shaw, You Know, San Francisco’s Government-Paid and Government-Loving “Journalist?”

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Well, let’s take a look:

OK:

1. You still have “Best Local Website” up there, srsly? Wasn’t that like from half a decade ago? Don’t you know that people are laughing at you over this? Oh, what’s that Randy, your lickspittle spent hours and hours and weeks and weeks trying to get an entry for BeyondChron into Wikipedia and it didn’t work and part of the reason why is that you’ve never gotten a journalism award, is that the reason why you cling? OK fine.

2. Uh, didn’t Aaron Peskin just save San Francisco well over $100,000,000? I think so. But you think he’s a failure because he can no longer “dine” with corrupt Willie Brown? Is that the measure of success, Randy?

3. Uh, the Board of Supervisors isn’t voting on the America’s Cup deal today, owing to the news what came out 24 hours ago. Didn’t anybody tell you, Randy? Boy, you’d think a big-city news editor such as yourself would know about stuff like this…

Hey Randy, does your house in the East Bay Hills really have six bedrooms and four bathrooms?

Maybe you’re a one-percenter?

Mmmm….

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Well, as they say:

There’s nothing like a three-time Tony Award winning musical about a civil rights titan who used his distinctly original brand of big-band music to fight against injustice to usher in inspiration during the holidays.”

Indeed.

Now I missed Opening Night of Fela yesterday at SHN‘s Curran Theatre in Union Square, but Rachel Masters was on the scene:

“Amazed by Fela @SHNSF. Beyond incredible story, music & dance. Thank you to the cast for such a moving performance! “

Get all the deets right here, from Elena Park.

Oh, and don’t miss this update: ‘Fela!’ joint sends buzz through audience.

“NBC Bay Area Expands Investigative Reporting Capabilities - Award-Winning Investigative Reporter Tony Kovaleski To Lead New Investigative Team - Jenna Susko Joins Station As Investigative Reporter

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 11, 2011 — NBC Bay Area today announced that it has added two investigative reporters to the station’s news staff, significantly increasing the station’s investigative reporting capabilities in advance of launching a new unit early next year.

Bay Area native Tony Kovaleski joins NBC Bay Area to lead the station’s investigative team after working at television stations in Phoenix, Houston and Denver.  While in Denver, Kovaleski exposed problems with emergency services at Denver’s airport and uncovered inappropriate gifts given to government appointees.  Kovaleski’s reports resulted in significant changes in airport operations and in tighter regulations governing gifts and travel.  As the winner of the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia award in 2010, the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Journalism, the Sigma Delta Chi award, the National Headliner award and more than 26 Emmy Awards including this year’s Emmy for Investigative Journalism, he is considered one of the country’s premiere investigative reporters.  Kovaleski is a graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in Journalism.

Investigative reporter Jenna Susko comes to NBC Bay Area after working at television stations in the southeastern United States.  She has built a reputation for quality investigative reporting with stories about poor oversight of FEMA funds across the Gulf Coast, mismanagement in a court system allowing criminals to easily get cases dismissed and security flaws at a local school system.  Susko has a degree from Florida State University in Communications and English Literature.

“As we increase our investment in high-quality local journalism, we are very pleased to welcome these two investigative journalists to the Bay Area and into our newsroom,” said Richard Cerussi, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area.  ”Tony and Jenna are the first of many new team members who will allow us to bring Bay Area viewers more of the kind of in-depth investigations that result in positive change.”

San Francisco’s Presidio Once Again Wins Preservation Design Awards: Officer’s Club and Landmark Projects

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

All the deets, below.

Via Presidio Trust

“PRESIDIO TAKES HOME TWO PRESTIGIOUS PRESERVATION DESIGN AWARDS
OFFICERS’ CLUB AND PRESIDIO LANDMARK PROJECTS HONORED

Presidio of San Francisco (October 4, 2011) — An innovative approach to historic preservation of the Presidio’s historic Officers’ Club has earned the Presidio Trust a Preservation Design award from the California Preservation Foundation (CPF). The award in the Culture Resources Studies and Reports category was one of two the Trust received at the CPF’s 28TH annual awards ceremony Saturday night. The rehabilitation of the Presidio Landmark was also honored in the Preservation category. These projects were among 27 winners in nine categories statewide.

It is the third consecutive year the Trust has earned a Preservation Design Award.

“It is a great honor to receive these awards from the California Preservation Foundation,” said Craig Middleton, the Trust’s executive director. “We take great pride in preserving the historic fabric and character of the Presidio and it is extremely gratifying when those efforts are recognized by an organization such as the CPF.”

The award for its Non-Destructive Evaluation Report, honors the Trust’s ground-breaking use of technology in preservation of the adobe walls inside the historic Officers’ Club. Using thermal imaging technology, similar to that used by fire departments to find hot spots or people in trapped in burning buildings, the Trust was able to map moisture levels and cavities inside the walls without having to drill into them or tear them down. Guided by these “maps” crews are now able to repair the walls using new adobe bricks.
“This is true preservation and conservation at its best and it’s exciting that the California Preservation Foundation has recognized that with their award,” says Christian Wallace a Project Manager for Planning and Historical Rehabilitation with the Trust.

The oldest and most loved building in the Presidio, and the oldest in San Francisco, the Officers’ Club is undergoing a complete rehabilitation that includes the repair and restoration of all significant historic spaces, the construction of new exhibit space and event venues, and seismic upgrades and improvements to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities. Work is scheduled to be completed late next year and the project is expected to receive a LEED gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

While the award is a first for the rehabilitation of the Officers’ Club, it is the sixth award for the Presidio Landmark project since its completion in July, 2010 and comes on the heels of a Gold Level Building Design+Construction, Reconstruction Award. The Presidio Landmark awards recognize the Trust, and its partner, Forest City Development, for the rehabilitation of the former Public Health Service Hospital and its transformation into 154 residential apartments.

The Trust and its partners in historic rehabilitation have now won a total of seven Preservation Design Awards since 2000. Past winners include:

Ø 2010 Cultural Resource Study Award—for the Cultural Landscape of the Presidio’s Fort Scott
Ø 2009 Rehabilitation (Large Category) Award—for the rehabilitation of a former army airplane hangar for La Petite Baleen, a children’s swim school
Ø 2009 Craftsman/Preservation Technology Award—for the restoration of the Presidio’s historic Arguello Gate
Ø 2006 Rehabilitation Award—for the rehabilitation of an historic warehouse for Senspa, a stunning day spa
Ø 2000 Rehabilitation Award—for the rehabilitation of the Presidio Fire Station

Founded in 1977, the California Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of California’s diverse cultural and architectural heritage. With over 1,500 members it is the leading voice for historic preservation in the state. Since 1984 the foundation’s highly competitive Preservation Design Awards program has honored exceptional historic preservation projects for excellence in design, construction, planning and technology.

The Presidio Trust was established by the United States Congress in 1996 to administer the Presidio of San Francisco, an urban national park site located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Presidio is one of the largest and most ambitious historic preservation projects underway in the United States. The Presidio’s historic buildings represent the nation’s most comprehensive collection of military architecture, dating from the Civil War through the Cold War, including homes and barracks that reflect how the military social hierarchy and domestic life evolved in the Presidio. Since 1994, approximately 75 percent of the park’s historic structures have been rehabilitated for new uses. The Trust has won numerous awards for planning and historic preservation.”
