Our Long Parochial Nightmare is Over: The Vandalized Slides at Panhandle Playground 94117 have been Replaced by RPD

Well the slides at the Panhandle Playground have been replaced after three months of absence.

1. Perhaps the RPD spokesmodel meant that the entire slide complex was being repaired, as opposed to the $2000 plastic slide itself. I don’t think it would have made sense to repair the slide itself, due to liability issues for starters. This is a brand-new slide, one that’s similar enough to the original.

2. So some wealthy, non-profit people came by with clipboards to say that this particular playground currently earns a “D” grade? Well, OK fine, but if you talk to the people who actually use the place, they, more or less, give it an “A” grade, you know, except for the slide that wasn’t there all summer long. Mmmmm… What’s up with that?

3. Supervisor London Breed’s office was unresponsive to the email contact sent by a group of concerned parents, apparently. So she gets an “F,” or an Incomplete perhaps. (I’ve worked at two similar offices, with about ten or one hundred times as many constituents, and if the elected in charge found out about something like this then there’d be a 20-minute yell-fest and/or a passive aggressive note sent to a (lower-case “s”) supervisor to “fix this.”) So, obvs, a “communication issue” occurred, I just don’t know how common this is with her office.

4. RPD has a policy to not repair anything in a playground if it’s due to be revamped in the next two years? That’s my understanding. Does that mean that this playground won’t get revamped anytime soon? That’s my understanding. Why’s that? Read on, Gentle Reader.

5. What RPD really wants is area parents to get together to raise something on the order of [bites right pinkie finger] one million dollars, you know, the way they do things in rich areas of SF, like Sea Cliff (ala the new Mountain Lake) and Presidio Heights. Only then will RPD put your playground at the top of the fix-it list? OK fine. The funny thing is that most of the money that gets used to refurbish existing playgrounds is paid for by the non-rich, from some bond. But all this doesn’t matter for the playground at hand, because:

6. The slide vandalized in May 2014 has been replaced in September 2014 and the users are now satisfied. No $5,000,000 modernization from the RPD is needed, frankly. [Oh what's that, RPD - this old-school playground costs you a lot of coin to maintain? Well, then why don't you fix it up, RPD, you know, using the money we give you?]

Vandalized Panhandle Playground Slide Crisis Enters Its Second Month – Won’t Somebody PLEASE Think of the Children?

Now here’s how the purple slides looked back in happier times, before The Attack of May 2014:

But then, sometime at the end of May, I’m guessing May 30th or May 31st, you know, the weekend, some vandal(s) (I’m guessing “young punks” or “hippies”) put a giant hole in the leftmost slide. Ouch!

So, first it was all like this…

…and then it was all like this – an even bigger hole:

But then on the following Monday (June 2nd), somebody from SFGov (DPW? RPD? SFPD?) came along and added some red DANGER tape:

And then soon after that, up went the plywood and then somebody came along and did a more permanent fix and so that’s how things look today, near the end of June.

Now I’m just assuming that the hole was the result of vandalism, but I don’t figure how else it could have happened.

(Can I blame SFGov for the hole? Nope. Not at all.)

(Can I find fault with how SFGov was/is handling the issue? Nope. Not at all.)

IMO, fixing these slides proper would be a big job, so simply getting another big old piece of plastic might be the best course of action. And that might take a while. I’m figuring a resolution by the end of July is reasonable – sorry kids.

In mitigation, the playground still has one working slide.

In the meantime, WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

Avalos Campaign Speculates Final Tally Will Edge in Their Favor, Pleased With Direction They Turned Race

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Wednesday, November 9th — Mayoral candidate John Avalos responded to results from first round of votes, putting him in a strong second place.

“We are incredibly proud to have run a clean, issue-based campaign, with 99% of the work done by volunteers. We defied expectations, and to have come this far is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers,” Avalos says. “But we are equally proud of the fact that we were able to change the debate, to make sure that the issues that matter to the everyday people in this City are now on the table and are getting the attention they deserve. We are confident that the results will wind up in our favor; I think everyone is in for a surprise.”

In spite of entering the race late, and spending less than a quarter of the budget of the Lee campaign, Avalos saw a surge in both the polls and on the streets. His campaign had enormous grassroots support from a broad cross-section of San Franciscans, with over 90% of donations coming from everyday San Franciscans, and 85% being under $100. This is markedly different from other campaigns who relied on negative character attacks, hit pieces, television commercials, and the efforts of big-dollar unregulated independent expenditure committees to make up the difference.

“This campaign is about building unity, building connections within the community of people who have been left out of the political process. We have been proud and inspired to see people from the Tenants Union working side-by-side with people from the Bike Coalition, to see members of DogPAC working with community members from the Bayview,” says Rosi Reyes, campaign spokeswoman. “These connections are integral to ensuring a new era of progressive policymaking in San Francisco, and we believe it is just a glimmer of what is to come with an Avalos administration.”

In addition to generating enormous grassroots enthusiasm, Avalos garnered some of the most-coveted endorsements in town. He was endorsed by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the San Francisco Democratic Party, the Harvey Milk LGBT Democractic Club, the San Francisco Bike Coalition, and the largest public-sector union, SEIU 1021. He was also endorsed by the United Educators of San Francisco, the California Nurses Association, and San Francisco Rising Action Fund, among many others.”

“PAULSON, FALK TO CO-CHAIR YES ON PROPOSITION C PENSION REFORM CAMPAIGN - Top Labor Leader, Top Business Leader Tapped To Lead Consensus Coalition

SAN FRANCISCO, August 31, 2011 – San Franciscans United For Pension And Health Reform today selected Tim Paulson and Steve Falk to serve as co-chairs of the campaign supporting Proposition C and opposing Proposition D on the November ballot.

Paulson is executive director of the San Francisco Labor Council, comprised of 150 local unions and representing 100,000 workers, and Falk is president and CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, a 1,500-member organization representing the business community.

“We are pleased that San Francisco’s top labor leader and top business leader are working together to lead this coalition’s campaign for pension and health reform,” said Thomas P. O’Connor, president of Fire Fighters Local 798. “Unions and the business community don’t agree on everything, but on Proposition C, San Francisco is united.”

Falk praised Proposition C, which was developed with input from the community, introduced by Mayor Ed Lee, and passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors.

“Proposition C saves taxpayers at least $1.3 billion over the next decade,” said Falk. “This measure is fiscally responsible and it will help keep us solvent.”

Paulson emphasized the measure’s fairness.

“Proposition C provides a safety net for hardworking city employees who earn lower wages,” said Paulson. “It keeps pension contributions stable for those making less than $50,000 a year. Those who make more pay more.”

O’Connor drew a contrast between Proposition C and Proposition D, a rival pension measure.

“Proposition C has widespread support because it was conceived in the light of day, with a public process that encouraged input and ideas from everyone,” said O’Connor. “On the other hand, the backers of Proposition D bought their way onto the ballot with signature gatherers who were paid five dollars a signature and repeatedly got caught on tape lying about what the measure would do.”

Today, San Franciscans United For Pension And Health Reform also announced the other members of its campaign committee. In addition to Paulson, Falk, and O’Connor, the committee includes other business and labor leaders, along with the measure’s sponsor at the Board of Supervisors:

“The Annual Milk-Moscone Memorial March will take place this Saturday, November 27, 2010. The vigil will take place on the anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, starting at 6pm. The vigil will last approximatly 1 hour and the march will begin at the Castro Muni station (Castro & Market Streets) at 6:45 PM.

The March commemorates the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone and is an opportunity for the community to mourn the loss of two of our city’s most progressive elected officials, reflect on their visions for San Francisco, and learn more about their lives through testimony from family and friends of Harvey. The event has been a community tradition annually since the assassinations. The speakers will be:

Harry Britt, former Supervisor, and friend of Harvey
