Free Hot Dog Day at Zog’s Dogs on Post Street a Huge Success

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

So there I was on Market Street yesterday pulling my old scam – I go up to the Zog’s Dogs at One Post Street near Montgomery and I says:

‘We’re gonna order then Yelp about it – what discount can you give us?’

With a quickness I had a free dog in my paw. See?

Of course, it was broken in the middle, just like our Bay Bridge, but quite tasty nevertheless. The regular price might seem a littley pricy if you’re used to Costco’s inflation-fighting $1.50 Hot Dog and a Coke Deal. I prefer the taste of Zog’s, I’d have to say.

Fixing the Cracked Up San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge – A Close Up Look

Monday, September 7th, 2009

See the crack? The red stuff will soon take up the slack, and that will be good enough until this part of the bridge gets imploded in 2013:

You might not even notice this temporary repair as you go speeding by.

Those are the only photos you can get from CalTrans now, as they took down all the others down after they made it onto Northern Calfornia’s biggest blog. Oh well.

And hey, how about that other stuff that CalTrans and everybody is working on? Watch it live right here on the KGO-TV.

Actually, it looks like they’re already done.

“Mike Sucks Big Titties” – Bay Bridge Has More Cracks, Offensive Graffiti Than You Might Imagine

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

All right, first thing up is the crack issue. So, CalTrans couldn’t have seen this crack before? Maybe they should shut down the bridge annually for a day or so if that would help them to do inspections more better? I mean, an eight year old digital camera that you can buy on the craigslist for $75 could be used to inspect for damage as obvious as this – all you’d have to do is walk around on the deck.

Actually, CalTrans wouldn’t even need to shut down the bridge, just a few lanes. It might not have been practical to snap a couple thousand photos in the pre-digital era, but it sure as heck is now. Try harder, CalTrans!

And I promised you some offensive graffiti, so here it is. This photo from yesterday shows some tagging on the bridge near Yerba Buena. See? It says, “MIKE SUCKS BIG TITTIES…”

Coming soon to a “hostile work environment” harassment lawsuit near you:

Perhaps Mike Whiteside’s pals could spend their time looking for more cracks instead of engaging in these kinds of  monkeyshines?

…and here’s the mise en scene at Centre Court in the mini-stadium. This is a pretty good transformation of Piers 30-32. You don’t get the total SoCal experience as you might in counties Los Angeles, Orange (yes, The O.C.) 0r Fun Diego, but it isn’t bad at all:

Hunter/House and Kaslow/Wooliver Win Inagural Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup and Break into Main Draw of AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot Wine
Main Draw play begins 8 a.m.  FRIDAY

SAN FRANCISCO (August 13, 2009) – Two beach volleyball teams have earned their shot at professional beach volleyball stardom Thursday at the inaugural Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup. Colleen Hunter and Meghan House (St. Louis), and Colin Kaslow and Tim Wooliver (Austin) have played into the Main Draw of the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot Wine, professional beach volleyball’s only stop in the Bay Area.

The Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup featured the best players from sixteen volleyball leagues around the nation, each of whom qualified to play in San Francisco in the hopes of getting their chance to make it into the main event, the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot Wine.

On the women’s side, Hunter and House defeated New York’s Dana Fiume and Ginger Schuster 18-21, 21-17, 16-14 to take home the first-ever women’s Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup title.

“We’re in shock,” House said. “As soon as the ball hit that net, we just started bawling.”

Hunter and House, now seeded 24th in the Main Draw, will take on ninth-seeded Angie Akers and Tyra Turner at 8 a.m. on Friday.

On the men’s side, Kaslow and Wooliver defeated St. Louis’ Phil Goedecker and Wayne Scott 13-21, 25-23, 15-10 in the final.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Wooliver said. “That’s why we play, to eventually make it to the AVP.”

Kaslow and Wooliver, also now seeded 24th, will attempt to upset ninth-seeded Billy Allen and Braidy Halverson.

Friday marks the start of Main Draw action at the AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Barefoot wine. Athletes set to play include Santa Clara native, Stanford graduate and two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh and 2008 gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, as well as Beijing Olympian and Orinda native Nicole Branagh. Stanford graduates Matt Fuerbringer and Ashley Ivy will also take to the sand Friday.

The AVP Crocs Tour San Francisco Open presented by Bud Light continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Piers 30/32 in San Francisco. Sunday’s men’s and women’s finals will be broadcast live on Comcast Sports Net Bay Area, starting at 2 p.m. PDT.

Tickets are available at www.avp.com, www.sfgiants.com or at the onsite box office.

Along the piers they have more tents set up than you would find at a typical Quidditch World Cup. They were handing out free Barefoot Wine yesterday:

Know Your Giant Floating Cranes – The Bay Bridge’s Left Coast Lifter Up Close

Monday, June 8th, 2009

SF Citizen’s CitizenShip One was able to get up after the winds died down this past weekend, so enjoy a close-up view of the business end of the largest crane to ever hit the West Coast, the best coast. Maybe this bad boy will put and end to the delays and help get the eastern span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge finished on (the revised, revised) schedule.

img_7013-copy

The Left Coast Lifter is painted red white and blue reflecting the fact that it’s straight out of Shanghai, China.  It can lift about 2000 tons (American short tons, the best kind).

Keep up the good work, LCL.

The New Bicycle and Pedestrian Path on the Bay Bridge Looks Awesome

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Of course it’s only been two decades since the Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, so it’s only natural that we’re still working on it. Let’s check out progress on California’s Bridge to Nowhere So Far.

That’s Treasure Island you can see ‘neath the Bay Bridge’s northern cable, and there’s Azkaban in the background. Click to expand:

But guess what - a “15.5-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian path will run along the eastbound deck of the 2-mile long structure.”

Can you see the white bicycle and pedestrian path there on the near side of the new eastern span?  They even have balconies. Check it:

Man, that’s going to be awesome. What’s the speed limit going to be for those going downhill?

Try to imagine it filled up with cars though, as that’s how it’s going to be, 24-7. Think back to the old days when traffic was so light you could pull over and conversate, at least that’s the way it was according to this segment of Shadow of the Thin Man from 1941 (at about minute 8:30 or so). (And all the trains were underneath on the lower deck, but that’s another story.)

(One time, I managed to change a tire (illegally?) on the upper deck of the suspension span, but that’s another story. A scary story)

But hey, what about a bike path on the western span? Well, that’s still pie in the sky these days. Maybe in a couple MORE decades…

The Reason Why San Francisco Has Cable Cars

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The reason why San Francisco put in cable cars in the first place was general hilliness, as here on California Street in Nob Hill. See the tracks near the middle of the street?

But none of these blocks makes the list of the steepest in San Francisco and it’s not too far, so you can always hoof it up this short distance instead (unless you’re wearing pretty shoes).
