Explaining to the Employees of Yammer Microsoft How They’re Not Really “Giving Back” to the Mid-Market Area

I don’t know, you can look right here for one version of the story about why Yammer Microsoft is doing so, so, soooooo many great things for San Francisco.

Or you can ask Microsoft Yammer why it doesn’t want to pay its fair share of taxes.

Leave us begin.

In 2004, the Mayor of San Francisco signed a law that closed a tax loophole.

Later on, that very same Mayor took a lot of money from the owner owner of a building with which you Microsoft Yammerers should be familiar, the Twitter Building:

That kicked off the whole tax boondoggle that Microsoft Yammer is taking advantage of now.

Oh, here it is:

“THIS COMMUNITY BENEFIT AGREEMENT 2013 MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING is made as of January 1, 2013 in the City and County of San Francisco, State of California, by and between YAMMER, A SUBSIDIARY OF MICROSOFT(“Microsoft”) and the CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO, a municipal corporation (“City”) acting by and through the City Administrator”

And it goes on and on talking about all the things that Microsoft is obligated to do for non-profit organizations that just happened to have endorsed Appointed Mayor Ed Lee.

So, well meaning white people who appear to be so, so, soooooo very proud of giving monitors worth (let’s hope) at least the contractually obligated $10,000 agreed to by MS….

….my question to you is this:

WHY DON’T YOU SIMPLY PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES INSTEAD OF DOING ALL THIS POLITICALLY-CONNECTED, PAT-YOURSELF-ON-THE-BACK RIGMAROLE?

I’ll do all the legwork if you’ll give me some basic tax and income information. So maybe some years that could end up being a lot of money. I’d say, ooh, IPO! That’s going to cost Microsoft SF a few million bucks. And then you’d cut a check for the general fund.

There’d be no Ron Conway-type exception for you.

What’s that? You can’t afford to pay the oppressive taxes and loophole closures signed into law by the San Francisco Mayors of Yesteryear?

You know, I don’t believe that, Yammer Micro$oft.

What’s that, you’d rather move to Brisbane or someplace in San Mateo County?

Well, then be my guest. (You know, most people pricing apartment rentals in town lately would welcome your departure. You think I’m joking? No, I’m srlsy.)

What’s that, you like “giving back” to the corrupt Twitterloin, ’cause you think it’s a kewl thing to do and whatnot?

Fine, do that AND pay your fair share of taxes to the General Fund, why not?

That would be groovy.

But what you’re doing now is getting involved with SFGov corruption in the most corrupt big American city west of Chicago.

Just saying.

Free Hawaiian Music in Japantown Today Until 6:00 PM: Kōkua Japan Concert to Benefit Japan Disaster Relief

Free event in Japantown’s Peace Plaza to include Hawaiian music, Polynesian dance and diverse Bay Area bands

SAN FRANCISCO, California — In response to the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan, a group of concerned citizens from the Bay Area’s Hawaiian and Asian American communities have organized Kōkua Japan San Francisco, a fundraising concert in Japantown’s Peace Plaza from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011. “Kōkua” means “help” in Hawaiian.

Donations to the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund will be solicited at the free event, which will also raise funds through raffles of donated merchandise and T-shirt sales. The nonprofit Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival will collect the monies and deliver them to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC), which administers the earthquake relief fund along with Union Bank. One hundred percent of the fund will be distributed for direct assistance to residents of the affected area of Japan.

The entertainment on the Peace Plaza stage, at Post and Buchanan streets, will be emceed by NBC Bay Area newsman and stand-up comedian Mike Inouye. The lineup includes: * Hawaiian music groups: Steven Espaniola & Friends, Faith Ako & Friends, Side Order Band featuring Chris Kamaka & Asa Young, ‘AHAmele ‘Ukulele Band, Ho’omana and JD Puli & Friends * Polynesian dance troupes: Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu (hula), Ke ‘Olu Makani ‘O Mauna Loa with kumu Meleana Manuel (hula), Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniākea (hula), Merahi O Tehani (Tahitian ‘ōte’a) * Diverse musical acts: Feelosophy (funk, soul), Project Gojira (fusion), Native Elements (reggae), Stymie & the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra (funk, rock, ska.)

Local merchants have donated items for raffle prizes, while Hawaiian Airlines is flying in 200 special “Aloha” T-shirts for sale with the help of the Hawai’i Lieutenant Governor’s office, which is coordinating the islands’ Aloha for Japan fundraising effort. The T-shirt, which uses a rising sun for the “o” in “Aloha,” will sell at Kōkua Japan San Francisco for $25, from which the $15 profit per shirt will go to earthquake relief. Sponsors include Aloha Warehouse, Colortone Digital, Hawai’i Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, Susie Kagami, Osaki Creative Group, and Sound Innovations. Thanks also go to Sandy Lee of the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department.


San Francisco Restaurant Community Comes Together to Help Crime Victim – Benefit at Ragazza January 24th

Haighteration has the story this AM about how the San Francisco restaurant community is coming together to help one of its own, someone who is still reeling from a crime committed late last year:

“In late November, a beloved member of the Ragazza staff, and broader San Francisco restaurant community, was the victim of a terrible crime. To help this individual get back on their feet, Ragazza, along with several other establishments, are hosting a fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit the crime victim. Funds will be raised through several sources.”

“1. On Monday, January 24, Ragazza will donate 100% of sales proceeds to this cause. For this evening, Ragazza will hold an intimate benefit dinner, with a special menu designed by Chef Sharon Ardiana.  The meal will be served family style, with antipasti, salad, pizza, entree and dessert.  Seatings are at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm or 9:00 pm.  The cost is $35/person, including wine, excluding gratuity and tax.  As of 1/13/11, the 7pm seating is sold out.  To make a reservation or to be put on the 7pm waiting list, please email Laurie at laurie@aocsf.com.

2. A variety of items will be auctioned off on eBay, between Friday, January 21st and Monday, January 31st. Auction items include special meals at notable San Francisco restaurants, cooking lessons, private meals prepared by Bay Area chefs, art, photography, wine and other items.
