They used to stop at 5th Street, but now they don’t – they go farther this year.
Hurray!
Won’t this please our corporate overlords at Twitter? (Probably not, but, you know, can’t hurt to try.)
All right, come to the annual lighting ceremony with the Mayor this Thursday evening, if you want:
“Snowflakes on Market – Lighting Ceremony
Nov. 17, 2011 through mid-January 2012
More than 140 five-foot-wide energy-saving LED illuminated snowflakes will decorate Market Street’s signature “Path of Gold” light poles this winter from Second to Sixth streets. A lighting ceremony, featuring dancers from the San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker, is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. near the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market streets. The event is free and open to the public. For information, visit www.marketstreetassociation.org.
It will go a little something like this, probably.
Dixitque Gavin fiat lux, et facta est lux:

Those are Nutcracker-starring “Snowflakes” from the San Francisco Ballet. (The run starts up again December 9th this year.) Jessica Carter is the snowflake in the middle, so I’m told.
Happy Holidays!

One or both of these people work security at the Old Navy Flagship store at Fourth and Market.
Seems as if the O.N. security staff was keeping as busy as the overworked clerks, what with all the descriptions of perps being bandied about on walkie talkies
Oh well, it’s a living.

Apple’s Black Friday discounts are bigger than expected for 2010.
Now, I wouldn’t ever recommend you starting down the path of Apple for a real computer (something like a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro or an iMac*) but you might find something in the iPad-or-smaller-category appealing.
Act now, today only:

*Why? Cause Apple’s competition is generally harder, better, faster, stronger, cheaper and will be for the foreseeable future.

Don’t miss your chance to see OVO from Cirque du Soleil down at the Le Grand Chapiteau tent in the parking lot of AT&T Park. Hurry, the whole shebang is heading down to San Hoser next month.
OVO is fantastic.
Here are a bunch of photos from Adam Lau, but it’s hard to show what the show is like without video. And even then, you still don’t get the sense of how close you are to the action.
OVO’s been going been going for a week or so, but people were calling yesterday’s performance Opening Night – the food was free for some reason and there were a lot of San Francisco Swells and/or People You’d Recognize in the crowd, including Olympic Gold Medal-winning Kristi Yamaguchi - she’s now Twittering about how she was in “constant awe“ last night.
Myself, I liked the suspended rope bit from Maxim Kozlov and Inna Mayorova best but the whole show was great.
The kiwi ants were memorable…

…and the very flexible spider was off the hook:

All the fun ends January 24th, 2010
See you there!

Not officially or anything, but the DPT /SFMTA / SFPD folks who normally work on keeping inbound Market Street free of cars from Eighth Street to Fifth Street took a break last Friday (yes, Black Friday). So it was like totally wide open to traffic, temporarily anyway.
This was the result: a string of slow-moving vehicles for as far as you could see, all the way to the Ferry Building. Click to expand:

Note the new signs. The previous versions talked about how “private vehicles” were banned from continuing. The current versions allow ”buses, taxis, trucks, and bikes” on Market. So that makes things more clear for the tourists.
Speaking of whom, Our Visitors just ignore the signs. They understand that they need to keep out of the bus and taxi-only diamond lanes, but they don’t seem to get the idea that they’re not allowed to proceed on Market the way they used to. It seems they need a crew of MUNI Parking Control Officers to tell them what’s up.
Oh well.
(Myself, I got doored by one of these cars a couple minutes after I snapped this photo. I was on the slow lane of the beige portion of the street to the right of the vehicle when the passenger door opened - it was an against-the-rule dooring just like the Incident at the Juicy Couture.
Oh well.)
