Well it’s in the San Francisco Business Times, so it must be true – the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is moving its headquaters to a new building, the Bong Building.
San Francisco’s historic ten-story Hidden Treasure #44.20 is purple, mas o menos. And it has gold cherubs.
See?

The building’s name is Bong, James Bong.
Look for this bike trailer, or possibly this one, to be hauling stuff from the notorious intersection of Sixth and Market to the Fourth and Market area. (They’ll have to mind the pigeon family living in the traffic signal at the intersection with Mason.)
Bon courage, SFBC!
Meet your new neighbors:

Not sure what the Yelpers have a problem with, but the Haight Ashbury Street Fair went off today without a hitch, just like last year.
Look at the swirling mass of humanity on just one block of Haight Street:

Can you see the superfluity of nuns in white approaching the Fair? Also note the F430 Ferrari supercar (sans license plates), one of many exoticars that made the journey to the Upper Haight today. Also note the sign: “No Open Containers of Alcohol.” Too bad.

Of course, all you need to get around the alcohol ban is a gallon jug of overproofed white rum and a giveaway “water” bottle. As seen on Ashbury.

District Five Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi was on the scene, gathering names for his newsletter distribution list.

Poorbot was looking for handouts:

“SHOW US YOUR BOOBS… please.” “FABULOUS PRIZES.” “DON’T WORRY (WE’RE GAY)” These inebriates residing above the Ben & Jerry’s at the corner of Ashbury were true to their word, tossing down trinkets to all flashers male and female.

You kmow why this San Francisco Native baby is better than you? Cause he had the foresight to be born in San Francisco, that’s why. He won the lottery/ when he was born.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus

And There Your Have It.

Here’s something you haven’t done but you should do: Visit the Sky Terrace atop the Westfield Mall on Market Street. It’s a Privately Owned Public Open Space, so the Man has to let you up there whether he likes it or not.
Hey, why not visit all the POPOS in San Francisco by using this well-researched guide from the people at SPUR and this handy map from the San Francisco Chronicle’s John King and Marcus Chan?
Here it is, featuring the Emporium Dome. Click to expand:

You’re up fairly high and you get an unusual view of the City:

If you look the right direction, you can forget the past 80 or so years of development. Here you can see UC Hastings College of Law and the highest dome in the Western Hemisphere, San Francisco City Hall:

But is this rooftop retreat hard to find? Not really. If you’re out on the street, just go into 835 Market (right next to the Bong Building), tell the security guard you want to go up to the Sky Terrace, and then you’re up there in no time. If you get hassled, keep yelling, “I knows my rights!” Repeatedly. That ought to do the trick.

Will you want to go back? Maybe, maybe not. A lot of these POPOS places aren’t what you call “destinations” – they’re just places to hang out if you’re around.
Anyway, check it out.
“The new Sky Terrace is the perfect setting for an exclusive and urban rooftop experience. It has a private entrance and overlooks the gorgeous dome and cityscape.
It’s perfect for a VIP lounge, wedding ceremony, film location, reception or intimate dinner. Combining the Sky Terrace with Under the Dome creates an event that flows in surprising directions.
Up to 300 guests for a cocktail reception, 175 for a sit-down dinner. 3,000+ square feet. Up to 2,500+ guests when spaces are combined.”
See you there!

Here it is, on 825- 833 Market Street. And guess what - this nine-story(?) building is 101 years young. Happy Birthday, Bong Building! Famous architect Lewis Parsons Hobart built you to last.
But uh oh, there’s a living Hobart relation who feels your remodel isn’t up to snuff. Could it have something to do with the busy Walgreens drug store at 825 Market?
These are the main entrance doors facing Market Street. A vast supply of munchies are conveniently available at the aforementioned Walgreens to the left. Click to expand:

Let’s see what young Phelps Hobart has to say:
Commercial Building, 1908
825-833 Market Street
“In composition, a steel reinforced poured concrete three part vertical block with Renaissance/Baroque ornamentation. It is distinguished by terra cotta eagles at the mezzanine level and garlands and balconies in the upper zone. The building is of major significance as part of the majestic wall of buildings along this part of Market Street. The front of the ground floor is an unsatisfactory remodel.”
Well! Anyway, three cheers to all the tenants who have to put up with the drug references and the mockery that must come from working in a purple building. Let’s salute the workers at San Francisco’s Bong Building:
