Oh, it’s on. It’s going to be Coco a Gogo when Conan O’Brien’s “half-assed“ 32-city “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour 2010“ comes to the Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium April 22-23. It’ll be just like 2007 all over again.
“Full Price Tickets” from TicketMonster are going right now for $74, all up. And for just $695 you can get in on the Meet and Greet Package- wouldn’t you like a photo of you and Coco to put on the FaceBook for all your “friends” to see? Sure you would.
I don’t know, maybe you can score some cheaper ticks by using your AmEx card or going to the box office or something.

Today’s groundbreaking for our new subway was quite the affair. The Central T will open for business sometime in 20xx – that’s pretty much an inevitability now.
Of course back in the day, we had naysayers. But they’ve given up. After all:
“‘This is not going to become the Big Dig.”
All right, I’ll bite. This is not going to become the Big Dig because….? Because why? That remains unstated, unarticulated.

So, yes, of course Boston’s disastrous Central Artery/Tunnel Project isn’t San Francisco’s Central Subway Project. But will there be massive overruns? Sure, I mean they’re pretty much baked into the cake, right? Interested parties would love to see cost overruns – that’s the primary reason why these things happen.
Will San Francisco be better off with this subway than without? Probably.
Will San Franciscans use it? Sure.
All right, thanks for our new subway, America. We’ll get more use out of it than people up north got out of the Everitt Memorial Highway. (Your federal tax dollars paid for that one too. Oh well.)
Let’s Hope It All Works Out.

Well, you can read the press release below. Or better yet, check out the refreshingly frank Wikipedia entry on Swiss International Air Lines and/or the prior SwissAir, which followed the Mckinsey & Company’s “Hunter Strategy” for too long. (You can read about that fiasco in B-School.)
Billions of bailout dollars (or whatever) later, the Swiss sort of have a vibrant national carrier again.
Anyway, if you’re flying to Switzerland, this will do. The Airbus A340 jumbo is nobody’s idea of a successful design (what with its surplus of fuel-sucking engines in this Big Twin Era), but it’ll get you there and back, six days a week, as a pampered guest of SWISS CEO Harry Hohmeister (his real name, srsly).

And British Airways isn’t pleased about this development at all, but oh well.

And if you like that, then sign up for free tickets. San Francisco’s showing will be at the Metreon in the SoMA on Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at 8:30 PM sharp.

Well it was quite a mystery last week when, via Eater SF’s The Shutter, we all learned that the Chevy’s Fresh Mex at 2 Embarcadero Center in the Financh would close down forever as of last Friday. Per ABC KGO TV Channel 7, the employees were bummed because they only got three days’ notice of the closure - and as for any severance benefits, well that’s a big fat nada.
Why did this eatery close down without warning? Well, the manager (and management in general) didn’t want to say. But now, we have a statement from Chevy’s. See?

Their “lease expired.” Simple, right?
But that seems a little funny. (Of course, I’m not in the restaurant biz so I don’t know.) You’d think they’d have been able to give the workers more notice if this was just a matter of losing a lease.
(And you know, actually, I’d imagine that Boston Properties (or whomever you talk to when you want to strike a bargain on cheaper rent at Embarcadero Center) would be looking to make a sweet deal, based upon the low level of occupancy they have these days…)
Maybe Chevys’ management figured they’d be closing this store a month or two ago, but they kept this info a secret from the workers?
(When Warren Simmons, Sr. and his son Warren “Scooter” Simmons, Jr. started up the first Chevys (no apostrophe, please) in Alameda back in 1987, did they think that this was they way it was going to be? Oh well.)

Craigslist newspaper classified ad safety questioned after slayings

Responding to an ad on Craigslist in a newspaper for a used car in East Palo Alto relationship got one man shot and robbed woman killed. A woman selling a laptop sofa on the classifieds site in a newspaper was held up at gunpoint in Vallejo raped in Burbank when she met with a prospective buyer.
Although millions of transactions spawned by Craigslist newspaper classified ads are completed without a problem, a small number end in violent crime.
That potential was underscored this week by… [the Craigslist Killer, yada, yada, yada.]
The high-profile slaying raises the questions: How safe is Craigslist are newspaper classified ads? And should the company newspaper industry do more to prevent violent crime?
Ah! It’s the weapon of choice of the classifed ad killer! Ah!
More than 42 million people used the site in March read newspapers.
[Nogoodniks] have tried to take advantage of the service by posing as legitimate users to find victims. Many users think nothing of inviting strangers they meet through the site to their homes to sell a sofa.
The frequency of violent crime on Craigslist through newspapers is unknown because law enforcement doesn’t track it. Several Bay Area police departments have had to investigate at least a few incidents in recent years.
Nationally, there have been at least four homicides related to Craigslist hundreds of slayings linked to newspapers.
Violent crime through Craigslist newspapers is in the spotlight following a series of attacks. Here are some precautions that can help users avoid falling victim:
– Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe.
– Tell a friend or family member where you’re going.
– Take your cell phone along.
– Consider having a friend accompany you.
– Trust your instincts.
