Why is This Lady CHP Officer Standing on the Central Freeway? The Better to Stop and/or Tase You

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

I have no idea how anyone could think that it was a good idea to end America’s primary east-west interstate freeway at Market and Octavia, but that’s what we have with the two-lane Central Freeway off-ramp these days.

Anyway right at the end of the off-ramp, the shoulder turns into a right-turn-only lane. And that’s right where this California Highway Patrol officer was standing the other day, with her prowler blocking your path.

Thusly.

“The current standard issue firearm for CHP officers is the Smith & Wesson Model 4006 TSW in .40 S&W. Each CHP patrol car is equipped with a Remington 870 Police 12‑gauge shotgun and a Colt AR‑15A2 in .223. Additionally, some officers are authorized to carry a taser.” If she has a Taser, she would be carrying it like this.

So I guess she was looking for CVC 21755 Pass on Right Safely violators?

Due to the perpetually congested traffic conditions there’s no place for you to hide after seeing the black and white Crown Vic.

It’s a living.

Anyway, I’ve never seen this kind of law enforcement technique of standing about on a freeway and waiting for the perps…

So This _Isn’t_ What Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom’s Mini-Motorcade Looks Like – But, Why the Lights, CHP?

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

[UPDATE: According to somebody who ought to know, this is not what a Lt. Gov. motorcade looks like these days. So, my bad.]

I don’t know, why are the lights on on these CHP prowlers?

To make the people inside feel good?

Looks that way.

I mean, this is the entire motorcade, so it’s not like cross-traffic is being stopped or anything.

I mean, don’t you want to be kind of low profile? Oh, I see, you feel that not enough people pay attention to
you, so everybody stare at me while I ride to the Starbucks?

OK fine:

IMO, our California Highway Patrol shouldn’t always do what the Lt. Gov VIPs want.

IMO.

But here’s why it’s generally in the interest of the CHP to patronize electeds.

Oh well.

(Oh, and next time you roll through town, CHP, in addition to the flashing lights, you should honk your horns and activate your sirens, like every minute. Hurray!)

OMG, They Made a Movie About the AC Transit Bus Fight – On Netflix Now – Entitled “Bad Ass” – $$ for Epic Beard Man?

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

This incident in the East Bay a few years back…

…has been made into a movie called Bad Ass:

Which I guess is old news.

But the new news is that you can watch this flick for free now via the NetFlix.

It’s just released. See?

“This movie is: Exciting”

(But, sorry streamer-only NetFlix people, right now you can only have them mail you the DVD or the Blu-Ray – you can’t just stream this to your device.)

And no, I don’t think Vietnam Tom Bruso, or anyone else on the bus that day…

…will get a dime out of Bad Ass.

That’s Tinseltown for you…

When You Have a Corrupt “Member CHP 11-99 Foundation” License Plate Holder, You Don’t Need a License Plate, Right?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Or so it would seem.

The funny thing is that this car is out of production so it’s not likely to have been driven off the dealer’s lot today.

Anyway, as seen on Market Street:

All right, all the deets:

I don’t know, the big problem with paying $2500 or whatever to become a member of the CHP 11-99 Foundation and then putting the license plate holder thing on the back of your car was that it looked like you were trying to get out of speeding tickets. Why?

‘Cause, some of your membership money got/gets used for “Emergency, Death, and Scholarship Benefits to California Highway Patrol family members.” Here, check the Wiki that the CHP11-99 Foundation wrote about itself:

“The California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation is an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, charitable organization that provides Emergency, Death, and Scholarship Benefits to California Highway Patrol family members. Since the CHP 11-99 Foundation was incorporated in 1981, the members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors have provided over $16 million in assistance to current, retired and Fallen in the Line of Duty CHP employees and their families. For over a quarter century, the important work of the Foundation has been enabled through the generosity of tens of thousands of individual donors and volunteers and by institutional grant funding. The organization’s name is taken from the radio code “11-99″ which means “Officer Needs Assistance – Send Location to All Units”

Now, supposeably, the bad old days when the appearance of A Culture of Corruption are behind us but you can still see these license plate things on brand cars, right here in 2011. And you can still buy the license plate holders second-hand as a kind of Get Out Of Jail Free kind of deal.

Shouldn’t all these licence plate holders be recalled so that CHP11-99 can get back to being a less-corrupt appearing organization?

As seen in 2011, and of course, on a Mercedes. (Saw one on a Camry one time – that’s what you call anomalous or something.)

The Special, So Very Special, Official License Plates of Your California State Senators and Assembly Members

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Your horrible Department of Motor Vehicles has all the deets on those “A” and “S” license plates you might occasionally notice about town.

Let’s see here:

A is for Assembly, S is for Senate, numbers represent the district concerned, R is for Retired and E is for the Extra car that Retired Senators sometimes acquire.

It’s all from CVC section §5002.8, which got approval from…. the California Senate and Assembly, believe it or not. Special they are.

Here’s a helpful chart:

Now I’ll tell you, even some CHiPs don’t know how to read these plates, so don’t feel bad.

Here, you can practice on this car. Oops, it’s from Massachusetts. Oh well. It looks special as well, tho.

I think that’s how you can save yourself a lot of money – just use out-of-state plates like so many others do…

Happy motoring!

Corrupt-Appearing “MEMBER 11-99 FOUNDATION” License Plate Holders Still Showing Up on Brand-New Luxo-Cars

The Scene of a Possible Pedestrian Fatality on 101 North Approaching Cesar Chavez

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Read about this accident at the high volume ActionNewsSf  Twitter page:

“TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Accident involving a pedestrian on the North 101 off ramp. CHP lists the incident as a ‘possible fatality.’”

Lots of CHP cruisers were on the scene just before 9:00 PM tonight. You can see officers focusing a flashlight on one area while taking measurements near the dark-colored Honda Civic sedan.

Not sure what happened but obviously there’s not much room on the shoulder for walking down to Bayshore if your car breaks down.

Will update.

Per unconfirmed reports to 911, an African American man on crutches walked up the offramp. Appears that he may have died.

[UPDATE: Joe Eskenazi has the sad story of Willie Speights.

Jerry Brown Takes Down: “Operation Knockout” Arrests 94 Norteños and Sureños in Salinas

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

California Attorney General Jerry Brown can’t abide gang wars in Steinbeck Country. So today he’s telling us about the people in his Gang Suppression Enforcement Program, along with a whole bunch of other California and federal peace officers, arresting 94 suspected Montery-area Norteños and Sureños.

And to keep things going, Jerry just announced a local, Salinas-area gang task force.

Anyway, there was a big press conference today – look at who all was there.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello (Northern District of CA), Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo, Salinas Chief of Police Louis Fetherolf, Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue and a host of others down in Salinas :

Check it:

“Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today discussed “Operation Knockout,” in which agents from Brown’s Gang Suppression Enforcement Program (GSEP) of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement arrested gang members after an eight-month, wide-ranging investigation and sweep targeting the most powerful gang leaders in the Salinas area.”

Brown Announces Major Gang Takedown in Salinas

SALINAS – Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced that more than 200 agents from his Gang Suppression Enforcement Program and other law enforcement agencies today arrested 37 members of two vicious gangs responsible for a rampage of violence — including more than three dozen murders and 200 shootings — that terrorized the citizens of Salinas and nearby areas.

Today’s mass arrests culminated an eight-month operation, code-named “Operation Knockout,” aimed at apprehending members of the Norteños and Sureños gangs that turned Salinas into a hub of murder, robbery and drug dealing.

The operation targeted the most dangerous gang leaders in the Salinas area. In addition to the arrests made today, agents seized 40 pounds of cocaine, 14 pounds of marijuana, nine ounces of methamphetamine, $34,000 in cash, and 12 guns. An additional 57 arrests were made before today’s sweep.

“Operation Knockout was designed to restore safety to the streets of Salinas,” said Brown. “Citizens in John Steinbeck’s hometown deserve better than having to endure a violent crime rate that’s three times the national average. We owed it to the people of Salinas to arrest these out-of-control gang members and ensure a heightened sense of personal security throughout the city.”
