Here’s the news from the boys and girls at Justice, below.
Patched up and riding high – the last time we saw the Cosco Busan back in 2007. Will it ever come back? She’s called the MSC Venezia these days, currently working in the Canaries.

Oh well, she’s not the first Hyundai to leak oil into San Francsico Bay, and she won’t be the last.
The full release, after the jump

This is how it goes when you’re a little less than cooperative and you’re arrested for burglary on Duboce near Steiner in San Francisco. You’ll have SFPD ten cops sitting around waiting for the paddy wagon.
When the van arrives you’ll get picked up by four of them and get carried away horizontally and face down.

That’s the difference between an arrest and a Terry Stop, which one officer can do all by his lonesome.
And oh yes, feel free to use the term mother fucker as a noun of direct address as you get spirited away.
It’s your right as an arrestee, after all.

Now, “as you might expect” - that has to do with the Christmas shopping season of course. You very well might expect SFPD cops standing on street corners doing nothing, but I’ve never seen the kind of holiday-season police presence that we have now. Doesn’t seem like the usual San Francisco approach, actually.
Another Brother getting hassled by The Man, or something like that. Lady Gaga was shocked by this Terry Stop(?) (I used to know this stuff, when I learned it back in the previous decade, when you were probably nine years old). And Snoop Dog? He didn’t say a word. Good thing they were protected from falling Hibernia Bank bricks, anyway:

Is this due to a new police captain at the Tenderloin Station? Or is it due to our new police chief? Maybe both?
No se.
On It Goes.

I don’t know, it seems like writer William Langewiesche, currently residing in France, wants to have it both ways with his new book, Fly by Wire: The Geese, the Glide, the Miracle on the Hudson. He wants to rip on Sully, thusly:
“His performance was a work of extraordinary concentration, which the public misread as coolness under fire. Some soldiers will recognize the distinction.”
“Like it or not, [French pilot Bernard Ziegler] reached out across the years and cradled them all the way to the water.”
But then when Langewiesche gets a little blowback, he folds up like a deck chair, talking about how he’s surprised by Sully’s reaction, and how he’s neither pro- nor anti- fly-by-wire, and how he thinks cockpit automation is merely ”a part of the story,” anyway, of Flight 1549. Well, duh, it’s a part of the story.
But that’s Langewiesche’s “Truth About the Miracle on the Hudson” – that’s it, that’s all there is?
Haven’t read Fly by Wire myself. Probably would rather read it more than Sully’s less-techy book (mostly about the his Search for What Really Matters), which I haven’t read either. Oh well.

Obviously, there are pros and cons to Die by Wire. If William Langewiesche is now going around saying that, as he is, then there’s not much of a dispute anymore, we’ll take solace in the certainly that the bruised egos of French Airbus execs (who want Sully to thank Gaia for Airbus every chance he gets) will heal over time.
I don’t know, pretty cheesy (fromagey?) Monsieur William Langewiesche.
Pretty cheesy.

East Bay local Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is back flying for U.S. Airways, but he’s still had time to write a book and go on tour. Sully will be at SFO tomorrow, in case you want to drop by at 11:00 AM. Otherwise, it costs $90k to arrange an appearance these days, so this is a good deal.
After all, Sully is Your Homeboy, right?

The SFO Hudson Bookseller is located pre-security (near the BART Station) in the Main Hall of the International Terminal on the “G” Area side.
October 20, 2009 – Tuesday
When: October 20, 2009 – Tuesday 11 a.m.
Where: Hudson Books, International Terminal (near Bart) San Francisco
What: Sully Sullenberger will be signing his new book “Highest Duty My Search for What Really Matters”

One-third of Outside Lands 2009 is finished and the reviews are universally good, more or less.
But what’s up with the water situation? People need to buy water? Srsly? How about air, is there a fee for breathing?

via minusman
At least they’re not charging $4 for a bottle of water, the way it went at the riotous Woodstock 1999.

Meadows Speedway and Lindley were abuzz yesterday in Golden Gate Park due to preparations for the sure-to-be-delightful Outside Lands 2009, which fires up this afternoon. The thriftiest among us will have to deal with a more robust fencing situation, it would appear. Check it:

You’re looking at perimeter chainlink that’s something like 9 feet high, coupled with crowd control fencing that’s a bit shorter.
Which strategy will win out this year – over, through, or under? Only time will tell…
Also new for this year is a huge signage effort:

Hurrah.
Look for the Critical Mass riders to show up ’round about eight-ish. Guaranteed.
Have a great OL09!
And don’t forget to share your stories with the N Judah Chronicles, in real time. baby. Why not?

About 20-something ornamental bricks rained down from the top of the old Hibernia Bank Building at 1 Jones Street on McAllister near Market yesterday evening, bringing out a mess of SFPD and SFFD personnel. (Get up to speed on this building at SF Curbed and the Socketsite.)
The mise-en-scene. Bricks fell from both of the traingular areas you can see near the top. Click to expand:

See where the bricks used to be, way up high?

Here are some of them on the sidewalk of the west side of Jones Street:

Some of the bricks that landed on the sidewalk at about 30 MPH:

Do you ever want worried-looking police captains and firefighting battalion chiefs hanging out in front of your building in front of yellow tape? No, you do not:

The SFFD made “soundings” as part of its investigation. Did that cause more blocks to fall? Possibly. Is that a Good Thing, that they fell yesterday instead of today on the noggins of passersby? Yes. Why did this masonry fall? Is there a possible suspect in this scene? Yes.

Is Albert Pissis rolling over in his grave about now?
“…Hibernia Bank at 1 Jones Street, completed in 1892, was exceptionally advanced, not only for San Francisco but for the country at large. It appeared a year before the Chicago Columbian Exposition swept the nation with renewed appreciation for classical grandeur and order. With its crisp and dignified detailing, its scholarly composition and white Sierra granite walls, capped with a then-gilded dome, the bank appeared like a manifesto near the incoherent City Hall and the adjacent jumble of brick and wood commercial structures. Architect and Engineer reflected in 1909 that “the (Hibernia Bank) became famous at once and marked an epoch in San Francisco architecture and placed its designer in the forefront of his profession, where he has remained ever since. The building from the first to last shows no sign whatever of immaturity.”

Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger got famous after running into these critters earlier in the year, but you don’t need an airplane to encounter monstrous Canada Geese. Oh no. Just head over to Fremont, CA. They’ve got thousands of ‘em.

First, they got Oakland, now they have Fremont.
Is San Francisco next?
