Why It’s Completely Absurd for the SFMTA to Claim that Carshare Car Rental Means “60,000 Fewer Vehicles on the Street”

Monday, July 31st, 2017

Here it is, from Hoodline:

“Data also showed that 17% of members got rid of their cars after joining a car-sharing company, with as many as 24,000 vehicles sold. When taking into account people who did not purchase cars because of car-sharing, there were as many as 60,000 fewer vehicles on the street.”

Well let’s call horse-shit on this.

So, when did “car-sharing” get started in Frisco – over the past half-decade? So here are the latest stats for AUTOS registered in San Francisco County, per the DMV.

Capturesdfsrrrrr copy

2011: 380,621
2012: 385,442
2013: 397,238
2014: 403,246
2015: 407,656
2016: 413,147

Do you see a trend here? Do you see registered vehicles going up by about 6000-something cars per year, year in and year out? That’s the trend lately, for whatever reason.

So where’s the supposed “60,000 fewer vehicles” kicking in from the SFMTA’s inconsequential program? Does the SFMTA really think we’d have 473,000 registered cars but for its heroic car “share” car rental program?

Obviously, our SFMTA really doesn’t know what’s it’s doing. So why not have an independent agency assess how effective its policies are instead of this, this Pyongyang-inspired Ministry of Truth stuff coming from SFMTA spokesmodels who are obviously just winging it day by day, DJT-style.

You know, what I’m talking about is having somebody around saying, “Is this really true?”

Or, in the case of attaining the goal of VisionZero 2024, which will somehow, by administrative decree, eliminate all transportation mishap injuries by 2024 and through eternity, “Could this possibly be true?”

I hadn’t thought of this new biz for a couple years, but now here it is, spotted in the wilds of the Financh:

I guess Bro here just drove a rental Prius to somebody’s home, took out his Bianchi and is now heading home? I think that’s how things work.

I Think ZIPCAR Rental Car is Calling You a Loser Here If You Don’t Drive Around with Friends

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

(Oh, I’m sry, Internet – I should have typed that as “looser,” you know, for clarity.)

Anyway, what do you make of this banner ad?

Capturelkh copy

In my day it was “HANG UP AND DRIVE” but in these days of miracle and wonder, it’s “LOG OFF AND DRIVE?”

And in my day Avis was all “WE TRY HARDER,” but in these days Avis calls itself “zipcar” and it tells you to “GET A CAR AND GET TOGETHER?”

OK fine.

All right, c u ltr, u car-free loosers…

It’s Official: The SFMTA’s Rental Car Partner “Getaround” has Turned One Parking Space into Two – One Simple Trick!

Friday, August 12th, 2016

Smart Cars sure are short, huh?

20160808_171340 copy

This looks like Gay Paree, except our version of the Smartcar Four-Two is actually a little longer than what those Europeans use.

Anyway, I don’t know how workable this is day-to-day, but there it is, two cars / one space.

Our SFMTA is Now Selling Neighborhood Street Parking Spaces for $2000 per Year – Getaround – “Carshare” They Call It

Thursday, December 10th, 2015

It looks like this:

7J7C0009 copy (2)

If you have a car but don’t give our SFMTA any money, then the SFMTA views you as a deadbeat. Our SFMTA wants/needs to grow, and it’s going to get more of your money to do it, just saying.

So what’s stopping it from painting up the Sunset and selling off (aka “manage”) spaces out there as well? IDK

“Car Share” is Car Rental IRL – And Here’s the Proof – And Does the Phrase “Sharing Economy” Actually Mean Rental Economy?

Getaround Rental Car Parked Just Outside Its Designated Space on Fell – Gets SFMTA Citation for Parking During Street Cleaning?

Friday, October 9th, 2015

So let’s see here. The Getaround rental car company is now leasing formerly public parking spaces from the SFMTA, right? It looks like this:

7J7C4997-copy

So now, when a Getaround rental car gets parked on Fell not in near the designated spaces during weekly street sweeping time, it’ll get a fat ticket, as here, one supposes, to compensate SF for the harm caused society for not having leaves swept up for another week:

(As I understand it, the Getaround rental car people have promised our corrupt SFMTA that Getaround would be responsible for cleaning up leaves in its spaces – that’s why Getaround rental cars parked in designated spaces don’t get ticketed during normal street sweeping time.)

So, what’s the difference where Getaround rental cars park on Fell? Something to think about…

“CAR FREE” & “CAR SHARE” – What SFGov _Really_ Means When It Uses These Terms – One Weird Trick!

Thursday, July 16th, 2015

Here you go – “CAR-FREE,” as seen at the western end of JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park:

7J7C1011 copy

Is being without a car a good thing? IDK. The neutral approach would be something like NO CARS, or NO CAR DAY or NO CARS DAY. We should think about a befuddled foreigner in a rental car – what should be our message to him/her? Here’s how other cities do it, you know, in a politics-free manner:

no-cars

See how that works? Yeah, JFK is a road through GGP, and yeah, people have been driving cars on it for well-nigh more than a century, but today is different. Today, this particular day, cars are banned. It’s NO CARS DAY. That’s the message you want to send, IMO. How about instructing these poor souls to USE FULTON OR LINCOLN instead? I mean we know they want to go west, so why not ease their befuddlement? Moving on…

To this – “CAR SHARE.” Did you know that “the sharing economy isn’t about sharing at all?” Let’s check the Harvard Business Review:

“When ‘sharing’ is market-mediated — when a company is an intermediary between consumers who don’t know each other — it is no longer sharing at all.”

So “car share” should be rental car or rent-a-car or car hire or something like that. Just anything but this:

Now why should SFGov favor one rental car company over another, why it should actively be promoting the so-called “sharing economy” is a mystery to me, but oh well.

Oh, here’s something, from Gerry Shih of Reuters:

Conway and Lee have an exceptionally close relationship.”

That’s appointed Mayor Ed Lee and longtime Republican Ron Conway.

Perhaps whoever ordered these stencils was trying to please Ron Conway…

UBER Taxi Guarantees $5000 in Income for Your First Month as a Driver, If You Believe This MUNI Bus Ad

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

Do you have to provide your own ride? If so, then you’d need to subtract out gas and whatnot, right?

IDK. Anyway, this is how our SFMTA makes money to pay its employees who lie about being sick, by taking ads for UBER:

The ball’s in your court, Lyft
