I’ll tell you, cartas don’t get any more magna than this – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime presentation of the Magna Carta at your Legion of Honor Museum going on now through June 5th, 2011.

“The Magna Carta - May 7, 2011 – June 5, 2011
The Magna Carta (or Great Charter of English Liberties), one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy, is on display at the Legion of Honor May 7–June 5. The document is presented in Gallery 3 under a Spanish ceiling dating from approximately 1500. The Magna Carta coming to San Francisco belongs to the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England, and is one of four surviving manuscripts from the revised 1217 issue. The document is considered an original Magna Carta—not a copy, but an official engrossment or exemplification of the Latin text, sent out by the royal record office to Gloucestershire in 1217 and most likely housed at St. Peter’s Abbey (now Gloucester Cathedral). Seventeen vintage originals still survive from the 13th century, including the manuscript that will be shown at the Legion of Honor.
A landscape-format sheet of parchment roughly sixteen inches wide and twelve inches high, the Magna Carta contains fifty-six lines of hand-inscribed Latin text, and the green wax seal of William Marshal the elder, a guardian of the boy King Henry III, who was then in power. It remains to this day one of the world’s great symbols of freedom and the rule of law. Its declaration that no free man should be imprisoned without due process underlies the development of common law in England and the concepts of individual liberty and constitutional government that created the United States.

Luke Thomas of our Fog City City Journal has the scoop on Board of Supervisors President David Chiu‘s opinion of Mayor Gavin Newsom‘s legally questionable plans to hold over as Mayor.
Check the latest:
“Chiu said he would be “surprised” if the current Board of Supervisors does not vote for an interim mayor on January 4 despite Newsom’s threat to delay his swearing in. ‘A lot of people are looking at that legal question,’ Chiu said, referring to whether Newsom can still claim to be Mayor of San Francisco when his term as Lt. Governor begins on January 3rd.”
Quite bold, non? (Of course, there will be no crisis if nobody objects to having a holdover Mayor, but these statements make it seem as if at least one person will object, anyway.
So, who’ll claim to be Mayor of San Francisco at the upcoming January 5th news conference / celebration for the America’s Cup boat race?
Who knows?

(So if somebody tells you, “Here comes da Mayor,” well, you won’t know whether to look on the street for a giant straight-outta-Hollywood SUV (complete with a gasoline engine bigger than what you used to find inside a giant CultureBus and a huge, hey-look-at-me, Frisbee-shaped TV antenna on top), or in the bike lane for a black Trek quasi-electric bicycle, or in the bus lane for a MUNI. Can you imagine?)
And if David makes good on his talk of running for Mayor for the 2012-2016 term at the end of 2011, he’d be joining Phil Ting and Leland Yee in an unprecedented Asian-American, one-two-three, Ranked Choice Voting juggernaut that very well could electrify a good portion (the largest portion?) of the electorate come November.
So there are your political bookends for year 2011.

If you don’t like the public high school your kids are assigned to, is it too late to get them signed up for the brand-new San Francisco Flex Academy? I don’t know.
In fact, there’s a lot I don’t know about San Francisco’s newest public charter school, the one at 555 Post, the one that’s “expecting to” start classes on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Appears as if you send your kids to Union Square five days a week and then they’ll get learning from a mix of real live teachers and online instruction. It’s called “bricks and clicks,” baby, and it’s ably explained right here.
(And you parents Down South won’t be left out - Flex Academy Silicon Valley is coming online in in San Joser next year.)

San Francisco Flex Academy to Open Downtown This Fall. New Public Charter School Now Accepting Enrollments for Students in Grades 9-12
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 23 — San Francisco Flex Academy (SF FLEX), an exciting new public charter high school and one of the state’s first full-time “hybrid” schools, will open this fall in downtown San Francisco. SF Flex is currently accepting enrollments for students in grades 9-12 and is expecting to start classes on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
The school is conveniently located in downtown San Francisco at 555 Post Street, easily accessible by MUNI and BART.
The school will offer both onsite classroom instruction with highly qualified, credentialed teachers and state-of-the-art online learning provided by K12 Inc., America’s largest provider of online school programs for students in kindergarten through high school. There is no tuition to attend this public charter school.

So far, they’d been advertising with stuff like this at Alice 97.3 FM and a poster campaign – I saw something on a light pole at McAllister and Van Ness a couple months back.

It’s on! The SaveMUNI.com First General Meeting is on!
Excellent, excellent SF FYI Net has the deets:
When: July 19, 2010 – Monday 6:30 p.m. Where: Northern Police Station, 1125 Fillmore Street, San Francisco
What: Save Muni.com’s first general meeting. Discussion and voting on Supervisor Sean Elsbernd’s ballot measure designed to remove the salary-setting for Muni drivers from the City Charter. A ballot proposition can only be endorsed if it receives the approval of 2/3rds of the members of the Organization in attendance at a General Meeting. Those who participated in the December 5th planning meeting, or registered at the March 6, 2010 Save Muni Summit, or both, constitute the voting membership of SaveMuni.com and have a vote on endorsement. Supervisor Elsbernd and the Union have been invited.“
Look for the Elsbernd side to win by a Raul Castro-like percentage on this vote, based upon the stringent requirements for suffrage. Still, everybody loves a thunderdome, everybody loves a MUNI cage match.

Hey, you know what would be nice? Flying you and eight of your friends on a medium sized corporate jet, say a Challenger 604, from California to Princess Juliana International Airport on the Dutch part of the island of Saint Martin.
How much would it cost? Well, just make an offer on a Virgin Charter empty leg flight. Somebody’s already offered about $11 a person. You can beat that, can’t you? Remember to tell your friends that they’re on their own when they want to go back to California. Just avoid those turboprop planes, and you’ll be styling.
You can’t win if you don’t play!
