This is a regular Sunday morning, but it was quite rainy.
Go up there as the weather’s clearing and you’ll have the place to yourself.
See?

This is how the Holiday Tree in front of San Francisco City Hall was lit at night two years ago:

Via Steve Rhodes, who, like Visa, is Everywhere You Want To Be.
And here’s how it looks this year, with all the color drained out:

See the difference?
Apparently, it costed five-figures to remove the color from the lights on the Great Christmas Tree of Civic Center.
O.K. fine…

Boy, this experience will be a good one for this city employee to talk about when St. Peter calls his name.

Oh, I’m sorry, turns out that this Christmas Tree isn’t actually a Christmas Tree. I keep forgetting…

The Great Christmas Tree of Civic Center will soon be back to counter the devilry recently inspired by the Great Buddha of Civic Center.
Now, they got rid of the Star of Bethlehem on top a couple years back but Your Favorite Christian Icon is a firmly entrenched San Francisco tradition. Look forward to its return in perpetuity.
It begins:

It used to be decorated gayly, but the WASPs took care of that, remember? We’ll see how it goes this year.
And after that we’ll get holiday lighting at City Hall – it’ll look more like it’s for National Margarita Day but oh well…

This is how the Holiday Tree in front of San Francisco City Hall was lit at night last year:

Via Steve Rhodes, who, like Visa, is Everywhere You Want To Be.
But all that color in Civic Center offended certain WASP-y type people. People like Thurston Howell III et ux Lovey:

So here are the expensive new lights for 2009, or some of them anyway. These colorless lights cost $13,500, per City Insder Rachel Gordon.

That ought to placate the richers for a while.
But couldn’t Rec and Park have put this matter to a vote, maybe online using that social media and whatnot? A penniless blogger could throw up a voting system in about five minutes – can’t Rec and Park do the same? This isn’t a matter of health or safety, right? So it seems appropriate that the Gilligans, Professors and the Mary Anns should have a say as well. Why do we seem to only listen to the Howells?
Oh well.
For 2009 anyway, enjoy your boring, WASPy-white, star-free Christmas Tree, San Francisco. But don’t give up Hope for Change (is that a “traditional” train ’round the tree R&P?) next year.

Here’s what Twin Peaks looks like after the intentional act of arson over the weekend:

This is what it looks like a little higher up from the Twin Peaks Overlook:

It seems like a pink Hindenburg crashed:

And the remaining balloons look like the start of a Christo art exhibit

Anyway, it looks like a few road flares could have done the damage, which amounts to about 150 square feet or so of charring.
Oh well.
