I like these repurposed parking meters – they ought to be religious icons (if they aren’t already, somewhere in the world.)
Anyway, these crossarmless Celtic Crosses are bike racks now taking the place of parking meters.
See?

Hurray!

I’ll tell you, I never before noticed this painted oval at our relatively new “Skating Place” in Golden Gate Park near 6th And Fulton.
It’s the Green Line of Golden Gate Park ’cause it divides the skaters from the skateboarders, apparently.
See?

Here’s a veteran skater laying down the law to a couple of Sk8tr Boies with skateboards. Boarders should stay inside the line and skaters (both inline and regular) should stay out.

Or something like that.
OTOH, if Heather Graham ever comes back to town, she can skate wherever she wants, right?
Rollergirl as Bond Girl. Gold! I love goooooold!

Anyway…
Can’t we all get along?

This is what Hands Across the Sand looked like today over at less-foggy-than-expected Ocean Beach way out there in western San Francisco.
“Ocean Beach, San Francisco, CA – Ocean Beach across from the Beach Chalet, 1000 Great Highway Joining hands at noon. The Ocean beach event includes spelling out a large “Don’t Drill” using people to make the letters. It will photographed from the air. Be there by 10:30 for that.”
Yes, that’s media hound Frank Chu in there:

We’ll just have to wait to see the photos from the air. (Did they use a petroleum-burning twirlypopper to take the photo, or maybe they used a kite? We’ll have to wait and see…)
[UPDATE: They used a twirlypopper, a Robinson actually, which is kind of a helicopter. A Republican one, ironically, from the Frank D. Robinson Helicopter company. Let's see here, Robinson's delivered something like 900 choppers so far and they've only had 262+(!) fatal accidents, per the Wiki. Wow. Also, it would be nice if this R44 model had inflatable floats for over-water operations, but oh well. A kite, and a DSLR (plus a surfboard, if necessary) also could have worked, by the way. I know it would have been less exciting...]

In between downpours yesterday, made it over to the Asian Art Museum where they were getting ready for Orchids: A Tribute to Doris Duke, starting today and running through Sunday, October 25, 2009.
Turns out that Doris Duke was heavy into orchids, she was “collector, cultivator, and preservationist” all in one. Plus, some of her pieces will be on display in the Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam & Burma, the new exhibit starting this Friday, October 23rd. So why not turn the AAM into a mini Conservatory of Flowers for a little while, huh?
Orchids: A Tribute to Doris Duke
Tuesday, October 20 through Sunday, October 25
Main Lobby, North and South courts
FREE with museum admission

Roll credits:
“Orchids (Orchidaceae) are flowering plants commonly found in Southeast Asia and other tropical parts of the world. This is a botanic description of orchids, but for most of us orchids are the most exotic of plants with an enormous diversity of shape, size, color. Doris Duke, who collected many of the artworks presented in Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam and Burma, was an avid orchid collector, cultivator, and preservationist. As an homage to Doris Duke and her passion for collecting, for the first time and for five days only, the museum will present a striking display of orchids. The display features arrangements by members of Ikebana International and Ikebana Teachers Federation, San Francisco Orchid Society, San Francisco Garden Club, Asian Art Museum Flower Committee, de Young Flower Committee; floral designers, orchid aficionados, and others.”
See you there!

See those letters in solid-colored circles at the bottom of the Kaiser Permanente “thrive” bus stop ad near Geary and Gough? That just might earn Kaiser a cease and desist letter from Lester G. Freundlich, Senior Associate Counsel, Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Just check out beloved local website Muni Diaries here and here to learn of the metaphorical long-distance beat-down 40WithEgg recently received all the way from the Empire State.
The problem comes from using circled capital letters while referencing a transit theme.
Well let’s see dare ah, you’se got an “A,” in dare - what’s youse guys doin’ wit our freaking “A”? Click to expand:

Of course, you’d think that Kaiser would have looked at this issue already, but you never know.
These days, Joe Moore appears to be off of the thin ice for now, but who knows what the future will bring. Will he get sued by MUNI?
Possibly. Oh well.
Give those New Yawkers Hell, Joe. And Kaiser, you too.
Let’s close with a sample of a scary cease and desist letter. Cheers.
Dear Mr. Smith:
Your above store was selling through website www.Cafeshops.com a variety of T-shirts based upon Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s trademarks for various routes of the New York City subway system.
The symbols for the routes of the New York City subway system are MTA intellectual property which may not be used on products without a license from MTA. In the absence of a license for these products, you must immediately cease to sell the unlicensed products.
On the basis of the above, at MTA’s demand, www.cafeshops.com has removed your shop from its site.
This is to demand that, if you are manufacturing or selling these products through any other channel, you must cease and desist immediately.
Please respond immediately in writing to me at the address indicated below or by email at the address indicated below, by completing the applicable statements on page 2 and returning this letter to me.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lester G. Freundlich
Senior Associate Counsel
Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Did you know there’s a giant 78-foot long sundial gnomon pointer-thingee jutting up out of the highest part of Bayview / Hunters Point? I didn’t.
But there it is, sitting in Yelp-rated Hilltop Park. This is what it looks like at the top of 275-foot tall Hunters Point Ridge with San Francisco Bay / Estuary in the background.

Can you see the new/old Cavallo Point Lodge and Fort Baker in the upper part of this view from San Francisco? What you can’t see is the Golden Gate Bridge just to the left.
Some people like CP a lot – it has a different feel than the City yet it’s less than three miles away from San Francisco‘s bustling Marina District.

Bring your money and your appetite and you’ll do fine.
