City Target at Geary and Masonic is So Attractive to Drivers, Lots of Them are Making Illegal U-Turns to Get There

Here’s the sitch – drivers southbound on Masonic south of Geary want to get to the City Target lower level parking lot.

Here we go, looking south, with City Target to the left and behind a bit, so drivers need to make a U-turn at the light:

To help with this, our SFMTA rigged the traffic signals (which were paid for by Target, BTW) to start the green light phase of Masonic with a left-only signal for southbound traffic only, allowing one, two, three, or four cars to make a left or hang a Louie, depending on how alert the drivers are.

However, drivers who aren’t at the start of the queue know that it’s simpler and faster to make the U-turn further north, as this car just did:

So now we’re looking north, Gentle Readers, in all the rest of the shots – Tar-GHEY du Ci-TAY is to the right.

So the question is whether this is an illegal turn over the double yellows…

This sedan is making a legal left to go east on Anza as the Jeep in the background is making an illegal U to get to City Target:

I saw three drivers do this in about ten seconds the other day. I’m thinking it’s illegal but drivers are unlikely to get busted for doing it.

Now the bonus part about making a U-turn to use the lower lot is that it’s easier to find parking there and it’s generally easier to exit from, depending on where you’re heading after your shopping session.

I’ll say that once you’ve gone past the lowest parking level, getting out of the City Centre mall and back on your way can be convoluted – like even the best path might appear to be the “wrong” way to go.

Of course, nobody would design a system such as this – it’s just an accident of history. The question is how to handle things.

IMO, the SFMTA handled this sitch the wrong way.

Target to Open Smaller-Format Stores in San Francisco’s Financial District and Berkeley – New TargetExpress Stores Customize Guest Experience


Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) today announced plans to open two new TargetExpress stores in San Francisco’s Financial District and Berkeley, Calif., in March 2015. Target’s first TargetExpress store opened this year in Minneapolis, and the San Francisco-area stores will mark the first time Target is expanding this format outside the Minneapolis area.

The San Francisco store will be approximately 18,000 square feet and located at the southwest corner of Bush Street and Sansome Street, next to the Montgomery BART station, in the heart of the financial district. The Berkeley store will be approximately 12,000 square feet and located at the southeast corner of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way, next to the Downtown Berkeley BART station, near the main entrance to the University of California, Berkeley.

“From listening to our guests at the two San Francisco CityTarget stores, we know the smaller format of TargetExpress will fit right into the busy San Francisco Bay Area lifestyle and enable us to cater to each community’s needs,” said Kamau Witherspoon, senior director, Store Operations, Target.

Target store teams have spent time understanding each local community to determine the right merchandise mix for each store, so both TargetExpress locations will be customized to fit the individual needs of the surrounding neighborhoods. For example, the Bush Street store will feature a large grab-and-go area with sandwiches, salads, breakfast items like yogurt and mid-day snacks for busy commuters on the go. The store will also include a Starbucks and select items from Target’s Made to Matter collection, which features products from San Francisco Bay Area companies like Annies, Yes To and Method.

The Berkeley store will offer a large selection of grocery items, including produce, dairy, frozen, snacks and beverages to serve the students, commuters and residents of Berkeley. Additionally, both new TargetExpress stores will be stocked with essentials in home, beauty and electronics, including a robust assortment of Target’s owned brands. The stores will also include Target’s popular pick-up-in-store service and a pharmacy.

Target opened the first TargetExpress in Minneapolis in July, and has announced plans to open one in the Highland Park area of St. Paul, Minn. in 2015. A third San Francisco Bay Area TargetExpress will also open in 2015, with a location to be announced in the coming months.

“City Target” Store Opening October 13th at “City Center 3.0″ – Geary & Masonic – Mervyn’s Heights is Now Target Tor

I’ll tell you, area NIMBYs got steamrolled on this one. It’s not that certain millionaire, property-owning ladies residing west of the Western Addition and south of North of NoPA are happy about this situation, but they didn’t get any traction due to massive community support, particularly from younger, non-millionaire mom-types, right?

And, I mean if you purchase your Great Estate next to a shuttered Mervyns with hundreds and hundreds of empty parking spaces, well, you gotta figure something’s going to replace it sooner or later.

So that’s it – Mervyn’s Heights is now Target Tor.

And NoPA (which actually isn’t north of the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, take a look at a map sometime) should now be called SoTA, South of Target.

All hail the second coming of City Target to the 415.

The project sponsor proposes to convert vacant retail space (formerly “The Good Guys” and “Mervyns”)
in the City Center shopping mall to a general merchandise retail store (d.b.a. “Target”) offering clothing,
personal accessories, household goods, including home furnishings, electronics and groceries, which is a
“formula retail use” as defined in Planning Code Section 703.3. The proposed project, occupying the
former Mervyns and Good Guys stores, will consist of approximately 106,000 square feet of retail space,
with a potential to add an additional 14,000 square feet if vacant space becomes available within the
shopping center, for a project total of approximately 120,000 square feet. The proposal involves interior
remodeling work as well as exterior improvements including signage, which would require the creation
of a Special Sign District. (The Planning Code text amendment for the “City Center Special Sign District”
under Case No. 2011.0656T will be heard concurrently with the Conditional Use request.) The existing
City Center shopping center has approximately 601 off-street parking spaces and five loading spaces; no
additional parking or loading spaces are required or proposed. Pedestrian entrances to the project are
accessible from Geary Boulevard, Masonic Avenue and O’Farrell Street while vehicular accesses are
provided on Masonic Avenue and O’Farrell Street.”
