COMING SOON: “BiRite Cafe at Civic Center Plaza” – Mmmmm, That Sounds … Expensive? – A Million Dollar Microstore with “Bad Ass” Egg Sandwiches

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

You know, for kids!

Check it – this sign makes things official:

The plan comes thanks to a $1 million dollar grant from the Helen Diller Family Foundation to install a family-friendly food purveyor next to the proposed new playgrounds across the park from City Hall, and is also funded with another $10 million from the Diller Foundation.”

Man, I could list you similar upscale concepts that worked fine somewhere else only to die in, say, Union Square and, well, even Civic Center itself. In fact, opening up such an establishment would seem like “a good way to lose a million dollars.” Except if you pay the owner a million as a kind of guarantee, well, gee, that could incentivise entrepreneurs to come out of the woodwork, non?

So, just as our USDOT operates an Essential Air Service program to provide inessential flights of mostly empty aircraft, local do-gooders are helping to provide Essential McMuffin Service to Civic Center, but you know, in an upscale way.

But don’t count on Dolores Park-style ice cream availability – it’ll be soft-serve only, Brother.

You know, for kids!

Anyway, this is new on me.

Leaving you with this, from Actual Local Joe Kukura:

“Any discussion of Civic Center inevitably turns to the area’s chronic homelessness, which has only gotten worse during a phase of construction and repairs to the Civic Center BART station. The Department of Public Health and Department of Public Works have been particularly aggressive about clearing the homeless from Civic Center lately, the latest attempt in a decades-long effort to clean up the area best known for the terrifying final scene from the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers that has only gotten scarier and scarier since then.”

“Electric Trees” COMING SOON to 200 Rose Alley: “Solar and EV Charging” for Renters in Multi-tenant Buildings – The Nitty Gritty

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

I don’t know what to call this part of the Western Addition anymore. Anyway, here’s your notice that things are afoot:

And here’s the nitty gritty from ElectricTrees.

What’s that you say, your electric steed has a ludicrous mode / concomitant large battery? Well, you’re going to have to pay more, pal:

Charging services are offered to subscribers based on the type of vehicle they own and its battery size. The service allows unlimited charging sessions and provides the fastest speed of charging for the subscriber’s registered vehicle. Once a vehicle is finished charging, a notification is sent via phone to the driver. The driver then has 15 minutes to move their vehicle before a parking fee is initiated that increases each hour the car remains in the parking space for a maximum of 4 hours. If the vehicle is still connected or the charging session ends after midnight there is a flat fee to stay in the space until 7 a.m. when the vehicle must be moved.

This could be your future if you don’t have a suburban-style garage / charger set up…

“Retired” Chronicle Writer CW Nevius is Now a Part Time Sports Writer in Santa Rosa – Plus He’s Playing the Marsh

Monday, March 13th, 2017

You can take the boy out of the suburbs but you can’t take the suburbs out of the boy, one assumes.

Anyway, that’s the new news – he’ll be a once-a-week writer a way up there.

And here’s the old news – his one man show at the Marsh

In 1980, I arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle to cover the Oakland Raiders. I had only been to California once in my life (when I was 12 years old), didn’t know a soul in San Francisco, and was scared to death that I wouldn’t be up to covering the “Hell’s Angels of the NFL.” My previous experience was writing for the SECOND-largest paper in Colorado Springs, and four years before that I was a high school English teacher. What followed was a tempestuous, and eventually miraculous, season that seemed like it would change everything. And then life happened.”

Of course, since he moved to Cali, he’s lived mostly in the ‘burbs, way out east. NTTAWWT, but he sort of omits that part of his bio. Anyway, here’s the venue:

Oh, he debuts tonight…

“Retired” Right-of-Center Columnist CW Nevius REBORN as an “Emerging Solo Performer” – “Chuck” Nevius Plays The Marsh March 13th & 27th

His new one-man show at The Marsh inside of the Hotel Utah is called “COMING SOON*” – sounds like it could get a little blue.

So borderline septuagenarian CW emerges as friendly “Chuck,” who will be the cleanup hitter after three one-woman shows.

Let’s hope he hits a home run (and that he pays his MUNI fare on his way to the theatre.)

From MNF to Monday Night Marsh – WALSTIB. (I recommend the $100 per ticket reserved seating option for these shows, Gentle Reader.)

Break a leg, “Chuck.”
