This San Francisco Park Ranger had his hands full the other day handing out $88 red zone parking tickets in Golden Gate Park right in front of the Conservatory of Flowers.
Would our tourists all park here if they knew they weren’t supposed to? Probably not. Do the markings on the pavement make sense really? No.
Is the current Bicycle Plan injunction a good excuse for the ridiculous way JFK Drive is marked for traffic and parking these days? Don’t know, You Make The Call.
A target-rich environment on Saturdays, that’s for sure.

The Golden Gate Express
The Conservatory of Flowers’ popular garden railway exhibit steams back into
town for the holidays
SAN FRANCISCO — All aboard The Golden Gate Express for a San Francisco
holiday experience like no other! Golden Gate Park¹s Conservatory of Flowers
brings back its enormously popular garden railway exhibition this winter
with many new features and surprises created by local garden railroad
aficionados and artists from SF Recycling & Disposal, Inc.¹s Artist in
Residence program. It¹s a celebration of the city of San Francisco as a
model train, cable car, streetcar and more wend their way through a lush
landscape of dwarf plants and zip past mini versions of the city¹s landmark
buildings created entirely from recycled materials. New this year also are
some only-in-San Francisco special effects including the sounds of the city
and the twice-daily arrival of the fog. The Golden Gate Express will be on
view November 19, 2009 through April 18, 2010 and opens with a preview gala
November 18, 2009.
All the deets, after the jump.

This is the scene in Golden Gate Park just outside the lovely Conservatory of Flowers, where a fitness team jumps rope and spars with boxing gloves, just like Rocky Balboa or something.
Are these the people who do sidewalk bowling pushups? Are they training to get into shape enough to consider applying for Hummer-equipped Hit the Hill with Jim Diruscio?

Here’s the situation. This recent photo shows an interstate bus parked in the westbound bike lane of John F. Kennedy Drive in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Of course the curb is painted red so people shouldn’t park there, but they do.
So where should a bike rider go? Well, around the bus of course, but that seems a tad on the dangerous side. For some odd reason, somebody decided that JFK should have the widest bike lanes in all of Christendom. And there’s an old tunnel under the road so it has a little kink, as seen here, right in front of the Conservatory of Flowers.

When you’re mapping things out in an ivory tower (ala the abysmal Octavia Boulevard) it’s a little tough to see how things will work out in real life.
In real life, pugnacious-looking, Norman Maileresque bus drivers will park their 8.5 foot wide rigs wherever the Hell they want.
So, is there another way to handle the striping on this piece of road? Maybe compromise on bike lane width? Maybe take out parking on the eastbound side of the street? Anything?

This is what butterflies and moths look like at the Conservatory of Flowers in the daytime, but some of these critters only come out in the evening. So you need to get on over to the Night Safari program that they have going on the first and third Thursdays of the month. They’ll be open all day and then they bring out the flashlights at 8:00 PM.
The Conservatory at night is proving to be a popular event for families but also date night option for young couples.
Check the video here.

Look at this thing – it’s like a stuffed animal. It’s a cecropia moth and boy is it big. Like this big. And here’s what it looked like in its fourth phase of being a caterpiller.
San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park is having its Butterfly Zone Special Exhibit these days, so you should check it out.

And don’t forget about the Night Safaris on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

See you there!
