“15th Annual International Conference on Hoarding & Cluttering Kicks-Off Mental Health Month in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2013  – The Mental Health Association of San Francisco (MHASF) hosts 15(th) Annual International Conference on Hoarding & Cluttering (ICHC) on May 2(nd) and 3(rd) at the Parc 55 Wyndham San Francisco-Union Square hotel.  Originally pioneered as a local, one-day conference in 1998, fifteen years later, it has evolved into a 3-day innovative, international, multidisciplinary and culturally responsive event bringing together advocates, researchers, clinicians, landlords and people who are personally struggling with hoarding challenges to foster learning and successful strategies that save lives, counter stigma and improve public welfare.

ICHC is the only ongoing annual conference in the world focusing solely on the complex issues, impact, and stigma associated with the disorder, drawing together stakeholders and experts across fields with a addressing effective solutions to the personal and public burdens that can arise from compulsive hoarding, cluttering and acquiring behaviors. ICHC features practical solutions, cutting edge innovations and emphasizes communities working together to better understand issues and promote the development of effective task forces, and engagement of diverse stakeholders.

May is Mental Health Month, and represents a milestone for the field as the American Psychiatric Association releases the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V) recognizing compulsive hoarding and cluttering as a significant and legitimate mental health condition. There is a three-part definition to compulsive hoarding behavior: 1.) The accumulation of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions that appear to be useless or of limited value. 2.) Living spaces become so cluttered that they can’t be used for the activities they were intended for. 3.) The hoarding behavior causes distress and impaired functioning

The 2013 ICHC conference is a source of learning, but it is especially a significant and unique opportunity for the many people who are isolated by their condition. People with hoarding and cluttering challenges often feel alone, ashamed and helpless. As a recent participant reflected many people aren’t aware on “any kind of help at all.”

President Barack Obama Picks Paula R. Collins and Alex Mehran as New Board Members of the Presidio Trust

Here’s the news of the day from our Presidio Trust, or perhaps it was last week’s  - I’m kind of slow on the the uptake sometimes:

“PRESIDENT OBAMA TAPS BUSINESS, CIVIC LEADERS FOR PRESIDIO TRUST BOARD – NANCY BECHTLE RE-APPOINTED BOARD’S CHAIR

Presidio of San Francisco (August 14, 2012) — President Barack Obama has named two prominent Bay Area leaders — Paula R. Collins and Alex Mehran — to the Presidio Trust Board of Directors. The White House also re-appointed Nancy Bechtle as board chair. Ms. Collins and Mr. Mehran are replacing outgoing board members J. Michael Shepherd and Bill Wilson.

Paula R. Collins is the chief executive officer of WDG Ventures, Inc., a real estate development company in Northern California, and president of Portfolio Real Estate Consulting.

Part of the original project development team for the Moscone Convention Center, Ms. Collins is a founder and director of Presidio Bank in San Francisco, a member of the national board of the Automobile Association of America and has served as an appointee to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Visiting Committee for the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In addition, she is co-chair of the Board of Directors for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, a member of the board of the Special Olympics for Northern California and has served on the Board of Directors of the BRIDGE Housing Corporation. Ms. Collins has been awarded the prestigious Silver Spur Award by the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research organization, in honor of her dedication to improving the quality of life and economic health of San Francisco; and has been honored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and the San Francisco Business Times. She graduated cum laude in urban studies from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts and received her master’s degree in city planning from MIT. Ms. Collins replaces Mr. Shepherd on the board.

A Bay Area native, Alex Mehran is the president and chief executive officer of Sunset Development Company, a San Ramon based real estate development, investment, construction and management company founded by his father almost 60 years ago.

Mr. Mehran is chair of the Contra Costa Economic Partnership, a trustee of the San Francisco Ballet and a member of the University of California, San Francisco Chancellor’s Associates. In addition, he is a past chairman and current executive committee member of the Bay Area Council and is a former trustee of the Urban Land Institute and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Mr. Mehran received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College, where he graduated with honors. He earned a law degree, also with honors, from England’s Cambridge University. Mr. Mehran replaces Mr. Wilson.

“Alex and Paula are joining the board at a very exciting time – the Presidio Trust is now financially self-sufficient and we are seeing the benefits of a decade worth of investments in the park,” said Craig Middleton, Presidio Trust Executive Director. “Alex and Paula will be instrumental in helping us expand the public benefit of the Presidio to the local community and the nation.”

A fourth generation San Franciscan, Nancy Bechtle grew up across the street from the Presidio, and, as a child would scale the base’s walls to play in Julius Kahn Park. Once, she was even kicked out for riding her horse on the base. Appointed to the Trust’s board by President George W. Bush in 2008, Ms. Bechtle was first elected chair in 2009. She is chairman of the board of the Sugar Bowl Corporation, serves on the board of directors for the Charles Schwab Corporation and is a former chief financial officer and director of J.R. Bechtle and Company. A past president and chief executive officer of the San Francisco Symphony, Ms. Bechtle has served on the symphony’s board of governors since 1984 and has also served on the board of the San Francisco Opera Association. In addition she has served on the board of the National Park Foundation, holding the board’s citizen chair from 2005 to 2007. Ms. Bechtle recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco and has received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the California Arts Council and the Investment in Leadership award from the Coro Foundation, among her many other honors.

“I am pleased to welcome these very talented and accomplished people to the board,” said Nancy Bechtle. “The experience that Paula and Alex bring will be great assets as the Trust expands its public-serving programs while continuing to keep an eye on ensuring the park’s self-sufficiency.”

The Presidio Trust is governed by a seven-member board of directors. Six members are appointed by the President of the United States. The seventh is the U.S. Secretary of the Interior or his designee. An executive director reports to the board and oversees a staff with expertise including environmental science, historic preservation, operations and maintenance, landscape design, planning, resource management, real estate development, public affairs and programs, law, and finance.

The Presidio Trust was established by the United States Congress in 1996 to administer the Presidio of San Francisco, an urban national park site that is located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The areas overseen by the Trust include expansive open space and spectacular views, a 300-acre historic forest, and rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The park comprises nearly 6 million square feet of buildings, including 469 historic structures that contribute to the Presidio’s status as a National Historic Landmark District.”

Either Ed Lee has made a mistake or C.O. is a sellout, it’s got to be one or the other.

“Top Five Food Trends Spotted at Winter Fancy Food Show

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 17, 2012 — The top five food trends for 2012 have been identified by a panel of trendspotters at the 37th Winter Fancy Food Show, which ends today in San Francisco.  It is the largest marketplace for specialty foods and beverages on the West Coast, with 80,000 products on display from 1,300 exhibitors from the U.S. and 35 countries.

OMG, Fancy Food Show 2012 at Moscone Center a Huge Success – Continues ‘Til Tuesday – Our Great Recession is Over

The Winter 2012 Fancy Food Show from the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade that continues through Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 at Moscone Center is unbelievably huge.

Like this. Can you see the Canadian Pavilion and the German? This is less than 10% of the exhibit hall space. It would take you hours to check out all the exhibitors:

Now if you want, you can pay your $60 to check things out for yourself, but expect to find a trade show – it’s not oriented towards consumers at all. But every last food trend you could imagine (and some you could not) is in the house and everybody’s handing out samples and related swag.

And every last nook and cranny of Moscone North and South is filled up. The place is hopping. I expected to see at least a few attendees bummed out over the state of the economy, but I didn’t. The Great Recession is Over, people.

This truly is a world-class* event, as defined.

Bon courage, people of Fancy Food Fest ’12!

*The tedious cliche “world-class” was overused in the 415 already by former Mayor Gavin Newsom and those in his administration and, now, the current Ed Lee holdover administration (which is basically the same people but with rearranged titles) has stepped up its use. IRL, not everything what touches the City and County is “world-class,” capiche? And, IRL, not everything what touches San Francisco needs to be “world-class.”

So, why don’t we save this term for events and organizations where it truly applies, like for outfits like the San Francisco Ballet (oh, the debut of Onegin kicks off the 2012 Season on January 27th, get your tickets here) for instance? All right, carry on.

Enter The Nevius: He’s Thoroughly Impressed With This Week’s International Pow Wow Tourist Convention Convention

You know, until I read The Neviusese’s* latest joint, I didn’t realize that San Francisco had a tourist industry.

Oh, wait a sec, rather, I had merely forgotten the importance of San Francisco’s number one source of money. Did you know that tourists pay taxes? Wow, thanks for reminding us all, The Nevius! Thanks for hammering the same point over and over again, avec trite quotes from cocktail party chatter, until you hit your word count. (Wow after reading Nevius, I’ll never tax a Happy Meal or vote for a Democrat again, or something.)

But, uh oh, can you call a convention of travel agents a “Pow Wow” in this day and age?

“The term has been used to describe any gathering of Native Americans of any tribe, and as such is occasionally heard in older Western movies. The word has also been used to refer to a meeting, especially a meeting of powerful people such as officers in the military. However, such use can also be viewed as disrespectful to Native culture.”

I’ll tell you, that’s the first thing I thought about when I heard that the 415 would host this year’s effort. Even The Nevius raised an eyebrow over the issue.
