Of course you’re too young to remember San Francisco back in the 1980′s, Gentle Reader, but I’m not. It was a time when we really only had one celebrity chef: Jeremiah Tower.

He was kind of a jerk, as you might be able to tell from this vintage bit here.*

Like I say, it was the 1980′s so why not start up a “Romantic Polynesian Cuisine” joint at a former garage on Auto Row and name the place after the garage and use the same historic sign out front, right? The heck with what those people at Warnaco / Speedo USA might think. Like I said, kind of a jerk.

Anywho, the Speedo’s Garage sign is gone but the edges are still there, waiting to get filled in, with something:

And what’s at this location today? Jodi Liano’s San Francisco Cooking School.

Anyway, that’s what crosses my mind when I ‘m crossing Van Ness. A fellow can remember a lot of things you wouldn’t think he’d remember.**

“Senior Counsel and Director of Legal Aid Firm (downtown / civic / van ness)

This is an opportunity to found a legal aid organization. In Amador v. California Culnary Academy, students alleged they were led to believe the $46,000 12-month culinary education they received would make economic sense based on their post-graduation job opportunities. For most students that proved untrue.

In connection with the $41.8 million class action settlement of the case (judgement is expected to become final later this month), $2 million has been earmarked to provide student-debt-related services to class members. These class members need help dealing with their creditors. The director will set up and manage the firm under the oversight of the trustees of the fund, Ray E. Gallo and Robert W. Mills. The objective is to effectively manage and compromise the class members’ debts by all legal means. Also, through other fundraising efforts, we hope this new firm may live beyond its $2 million founding budget to become the first agency to focus on providing remedies to the economically disadvantaged when they suffer consumer-related tragedies like those at issue in Amador.

The ideal applicant is an attorney with 10 or more years of experience who enjoys being in a courtroom and has significant experience supervising other lawyers and staff members. Big firm training and top 10 schooling are preferred, but anybody smart and scrappy is welcome to apply. This will be a small firm environment, and effective use of technology will be essential, so you should be someone who welcomes those things.

The job may be available as early as July 1, 2012 and requires a commitment of at least two years. The location of the firm will be determined in consultation with the Director once hired.

Scharffen Berger Chocolate Baking Class with Celebrity Chef Elizabeth Falkner a Huge Success at CUESA Kitchen

Before Scharffen Berger Chocolate was purchased by Hershey, you could go on a free factory tour in Berkeley. Good times.

These days the factory’s gone, but Hershey’s says it’s making the same old stuff in Indiana on a national scale. OK fine.

Anyway, over the weekend, celebrity chef Elizabeth Falkner was on hand at the Ferry Building to offer Scharffen Berger Chocolate cooking tips and also to promote a contest. See below.

San Francisco Restaurant Community Comes Together to Help Crime Victim – Benefit at Ragazza January 24th

Haighteration has the story this AM about how the San Francisco restaurant community is coming together to help one of its own, someone who is still reeling from a crime committed late last year:

“In late November, a beloved member of the Ragazza staff, and broader San Francisco restaurant community, was the victim of a terrible crime. To help this individual get back on their feet, Ragazza, along with several other establishments, are hosting a fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit the crime victim. Funds will be raised through several sources.”

And check out all the local businesspeople who are contributing, below.

“1. On Monday, January 24, Ragazza will donate 100% of sales proceeds to this cause. For this evening, Ragazza will hold an intimate benefit dinner, with a special menu designed by Chef Sharon Ardiana.  The meal will be served family style, with antipasti, salad, pizza, entree and dessert.  Seatings are at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm or 9:00 pm.  The cost is $35/person, including wine, excluding gratuity and tax.  As of 1/13/11, the 7pm seating is sold out.  To make a reservation or to be put on the 7pm waiting list, please email Laurie at laurie@aocsf.com.

2. A variety of items will be auctioned off on eBay, between Friday, January 21st and Monday, January 31st. Chocolate takes center stage at the California Academy of Sciences during NightLife on December 16th

Submit your recipe by June 30th, 2010 and you just might win the First Annual Foster Farms West Coast Chicken Cooking Contest in San Francisco come September. Do it for the lulz but mind the red tape:

“The contest is open to all California, Oregon and Washington residents over the age of 18. Contestants are encouraged to submit their unique chicken recipes featuring fresh Foster Farms chicken and local ingredients, wherever possible. Entries will be judged by members of the food media and culinary professionals. I know what your thinking, your thinking Chinese Chicken Burgers with Rainbow Sesame Slaw. Well it’s been done already in a recent national contest, so try to think of some unique recipe using degredients from your area. It’s all local these days, right? And a story, you gots to have a cute story to tell the judges while they’re noshing. (Work in something about your grandmother, that’s always a winner.)
