Exit the Sandman – Our San Francisco Ballet’s Coppélia is Leaving This Sunday, March 27th

Friday, March 25th, 2011

The reviews are all in for Coppélia 2011 at our San Francisco Ballet but the joint is leaving us in just two short days.

Only four shows left! Which will you see?

Check it:

Casting for Saturday’s opening performance was stellar all the way. Together, Maria Kochetkova and Gennadi Nedvigin add up to a frisky pair of teens. For Nedvigin, Franz is simply a career triumph, notable for purity of style, antic spirit and elegant showmanship. Kochetkova is a naughty but nice Swanilda, an authentic stylist capable of dazzling us with strings of bourrees, smooth cambrés and airy jetes.
San Francisco Chronicle

“Maria Kochetkova as ‘Swanilda’ was sublime. Her acting chops have soared to a new level in this delightful romp that also demands the skills of a top drawer diva ballerina. Her petite frame and sweet visage make her the ideal choice for the role of a bride-to-be who must prove the fidelity of her lover who has suddenly developed a thing for a life-size mechanical doll.”
San Francisco Sentinel

And then check this, from the San Francisco Examiner Critic Janos Gereben. And Becca Klarin says it’s Super Duper. And those Marin Mommies, they like it too.

Will you gasp and then applaud along with the rest the crowd when the curtains lift on the empty set at the opening of the Second Act? Maybe.

Will you lose count on how many ballerinas are on stage at one time during the Third Act? Definitely.

Coppélia is fantastic.

See you there!

Cut-Rate Pre-Valentine’s Ballet: Special Half-Price Performance of Giselle Had People Lined-Up Around the Block Last Night

Monday, February 14th, 2011

I don’t exactly know why, but our San Francisco Ballet opened its doors last night for a last-of-the-season performance of Giselle.

First, it was all like this, with the will-call line going down Van Ness and then curving around to Grove:

And then it was like this – here’s the view from first class, courtesy of McNitt.

(Oh, so that’s what it looks like from up there. I’ve never been.)

And then it ended with a standing ovation for Maria Kochetkova (@balletrusse – she has 110,000 Twitter followers at this point) and everybody else involved.

Truly a memorable evening it was.

Hey, why not head over to the SFB right now and score three performances for $78 ‘n stuff?

And don’t forget about enchanting story ballet Coppélia coming March 19th, 2011.

See you there!
