The Aging, Unreliable Harley Davidsons of the 100 Year Old SFPD Motor Division

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

These cops of the 100-year old Motor Division of the San Francisco Police Department waited all morning for a recent Roe v. Wade abortion demonstration / counter-demonstration to get started and then were, once again, left in the lurch by an obsolete-when-built Harley Davidson motorcycle.

So all they could do is push it onto the sidewalk and worry about it later - unreliable equipment is no picnic, of course. That must be why they get paid the big bucks to ladle out bowls of rich, creamy justice, with the average officer pulling down a six-figure income

Harley David/ son of a bitch, not again! Click to expand:

Even if you maintain these old-school Harleys correctly, they are hard to keep on the road. The biggest selling pointa they have are tradition and heritage, it seems. Vendors of reliable models from Honda, Kawasaki, and BMW must be frustrated… Oh well.

Happy Centennial, SFPD Motor Division!

A Grown Man on His Stand Up Tricycle in San Francisco

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Now you might think this fellow zooming down Golden Gate Avenue (not too far from where Patty Hearst spent a few terrifying months) is standing on a California Chariot, but you’d be wrong because this backwards tricycle appears to have pedals and a drivetrain.

Complete with his “Wild Kid” T-shirt, this man has got it going on, leaning this way and that down Ignatius Heights.

For those about to trike, we salute you.

Will Radiohead Give Away Concert Tickets to Bicycle Riders in San Francisco?

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Radiohead’s recent attempt to give away concert tickets failed in France because people were too lazy to pedal their bikes on over to pick them up. Quelle horreur!

But things will be different if Radiohead tries the same stunt in San Francisco this summer.

A rainbow over Golden Gate Park from the San Francisco Botanical Garden. The park will be In Rainbows once again when the Outside Lands music festival starts up on August 22nd.

In fact, if Radiohead tries to give away tickets to people who cycle to some office building in San Francisco, a riot will probably break out.

There Will Be Blood, or at least a squabble or two. But, rest assured, all available free tickets will get distributed and used.

See you there!

Build a Trail, Go to Jail in Marin County, the Home of Mountain Biking

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Only in Marin! That’s right, Marin County, the birthplace of mountain biking, and home to nuclear-tipped missiles, endangered deer, and marauding mountain lions (nee cougars), can’t abide you people building your own single-track MTB trails.

Michael Philip More is getting a ten-day jail sentence for illegally building a quarter-mile trail at the end of Robinhood Drive in San Rafael.

Approximate path of the trail - the white line is a quarter-mile long

Does Michael More wish there were more singletrack MTB trails in Marin? Given that MTBers are mostly confined to fire roads in Marin County, signs point to yes.
