What, Somebody’s _Starting_ a Newspaper in San Francisco? Presenting Issue One of “HATCH Beat” from Liz Fedak of Illinois

Saturday, May 17th, 2014

Well, here it is, an actual real 8-page newspaper “serving Cole Valley, Alamo Square, Hayes Valley and the Haights” – it’s the brand-new HAtCHBeat, Issue One*

Now meet Liz Fedak, Publisher.

Somebody who tried something like this a little while back was Eve Batey. Her online-only effort didn’t work out.

And speaking of online-only, Hoodline (mostly covering “Divisadero, Hayes Valley, Lower Haight, Upper Haight,” mostly) comes to mind as there’s a lot of overlap there. Liz has carved out an area that we can call District 5 Less The Inner Sunset.

Who’s taken notice already? How about D5 Supervisor London Breed** with her City Hall column and SFPD Park Station Captain Gregory Corrales with his Police Beat?

And add to that an alphabet soup of SFGov departments, including advertisers with big ads such as the Department of Elections and the SF Public Library.

Check it out if you can. You’ll see a bit about Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic (1988-2013) that takes a decidedly anti-RPD position.

That was the wind-up, now here’s the pitch:

Do you have interest in writing, photography or videography? Whether you have experience or not, send an email to editor@hatchbeat.com to get involved.”

Leaving you with the categories to be covered:

Business + Money — HATCH Beat
Parenting — HATCH Beat
Profiles — HATCH Beat
Community — HATCH Beat
Calendar — HATCH Beat
Pets — HATCH Beat
Food + Drink — HATCH Beat
Police Blotter — HATCH Beat
Entertainment — HATCH Beat

I’ll tell you, I was startled to see this small newspaper – it just cruised in under the radar and onto my stoop.

 Bon courage, HAtCHBeat!

*AFAIK

Would Christina Olague Have “Saved Rent Control?”

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

No, not at all.

So why did people hold a rally about former Interim Supervisor Christina Olague saving rent control?

On the steps of City Hall:

I know not.

Now, if you wanted to say that renters as a group, overall, would have been better off with a Christina Olague, or a John Rizzo, or a Julian Davis as Supervisor of District Five, well then you might have something…

I s’pose it doesn’t matter now.

District Five Meltdown: The Problems with the Three Front Runners – Christina Olague, London Breed and Julian Davis

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

[UPDATE: Yoops, this ended up not being the order of finish. Hey, perhaps Rose Pak is merely a paper dragon lady, powerless outside of the Realm of Stencil Voters and Oppressed (by Rose Pak et al) Newcomers? It's sure looking that way.]

In order of finish:

1. Back in the day, Christina Olague accepted the deal that Julian Davis and who-knows-who-else rejected. So that meant that she worked on the Run Ed Run campaign in exchange for the promise of later getting appointed as Supervisor of District Five.

Before, she was the Perjurer’s Helper, but is she now?

I don’t know. We’ll see.

IMO, her rise to power is (still, very possibly) a trap. We’ll see.

Despite recent events involving Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, Christina Olague is still the choice of Rose Pak, Randy Shaw and the rest of San Francisco’s corrupt, government-subsidized, non-profit cabal.

And, apparently, CO is NOT the choice of the Ron Coates / Linda Voight / Ron Conway / Gayle Conway / Republican billionaire / real estate interests side of Willie Brown’s / Ed Lee’s conservative (for San Francisco) Democratic party faction.

You see, there’s a schism, these days, that’s wide out in the open for all to see. So, one side of the faction supports Eric Mar and Christina Olague and the other side supports David Lee and London Breed.

Speaking of which:

2. London Breed is the choice of the Ron Coates / Linda Voight / Ron Conway / Gayle Conway / Republican billionaire / RE interests side of Willie Brown’s / Ed Lee’s conservative (for San Francisco) Democratic party faction.

As she states, she can’t tell the Republican Billionaires of the Bay Area et uxes to stop supporting her, but why would they be spending all that money?

Mmmm…

That leaves us with:

3. Julian Davis, who recently DNQ’ed

Joe, I want to clarify that when you called me yesterday you did not tell me what you were calling about and I did not receive a call back later in the day. I am not going to comment further about anonymous uncorroborated attacks coming from your publication a week before Election Day. Voters I talk to in the streets are intelligent enough to see past the politics of personal destruction. Their concerns are real—a more affordable city, improved public transit and a better climate for small business, to name a few. Your readers would benefit from substantive reporting on these issues and on how the candidates differ on them. Julian Davis

Pwned:

Julian –Shortly after noon yesterday, I phoned your lawyer and asked him about the letter. Immediately afterward, I called you. You said you were on another call and asked if this was urgent. I replied that you should call me back as soon as you could. You said you would, and I was left with the impression you would phone back when you were off your call. That didn’t happen, and I got your voicemail when I called you at 2 p.m. Sadly, you did not call us back before our story went up at 8:30 this morning. This most recent allegation is neither anonymous nor uncorroborated. While the accuser’s name is not printed in our article, it was most certainly affixed on the letters she sent to you and your attorney. I agree with you that our readers would benefit from reporting on “a more affordable city, improved public transit, and a better climate for small business.” I disagree with you that we aren’t reporting on these issues:

Sincerely yours, Joe Eskenazi

So that takes care of that.

Oh, and who else? Thea Selby should have taken steps after news of that $10k of RE money had spread. She didn’t. (Perhaps she’s the other candidate that Mayor Ed Lee is “privately” telling his inner circle to vote for? Mmmm.)

And it looks like John Rizzo made some sort of deal with Christina Olague or whomever functions as the Progressive version of Walter Wong these days. We’ll find out what his reward is apres-election.

That’s my best guess.

District Five Meltdown: The Conservative “Alliance for Jobs and Sustainable Growth” Goes After John Rizzo? Not Rizzo!

Monday, November 5th, 2012

The flipside of this hangar is all about how great Prop A is, go figure.

Too bad San Francisco’s conservative political faction can’t tell us who to vote FOR.

And I thought that JR was everybody’s #2 choice…

San Francisco Chamber of Commerce | Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA – San Francisco) | San Francisco Committee on Jobs | Golden Gate Restaurant Association | San Francisco Small Business Network | Hospital Council of Northern & Central California | NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Developers

And the Number One Litterbug in District Five is … Interim Supervisor Christina Olague – Why Is That?

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

The problem when you pay minimum-type wages so people will pretend to support you is that they don’t really care about earning their pay.

Thusly:

These abandoned flyers area all over the Western Addition these days.

Oh well.

And I’ll tell you, having Rose Pak twisting your arm to venture into D5, well that doesn’t improve your work ethic at all.

London Breed is spending on lit as well in the same area on the same race, but you don’t see her face littering the sidewalks and streets.

And also, you don’t see London Breed lit posted illegally neither.

Why is that?

Mr. Davis, your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?

This post sponsored by Perjurer Helper, When You Need a Helping Hand:

D5 Supervisor Candidate Julian Davis to Star at Sunday Streets Western Addition, September 9th, 2012, 11AM to 4PM

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

I mean, I assume.

Leave us review:

If you voted for Ed Lee for Mayor, your choice for the next D5 Supervisor is London Breed.*

OTOH, if you voted against Ed Lee for Mayor, your choice for the next D5 Supervisor is Julian Davis. Throw in a couple other choices if you want, but make sure neither one is London Breed or Interim Supervisor and Total Sellout Christine Olague. (Or should I say Christine “8 Washington” Olague? Or should I say Christine “Perjurer Accomplice” Olague?)

Easy Peasy.

Come out and say hi to Julian, I’m sure he’ll be there, this Sunday:

Hey, is PG&E a “Sponsor” of this event, on September 9th, 2012, the two year anniversary of PG&E’s San Bruno Pipeline Explosion, the one that killed eight souls? I think so.

(I wish San Francisco had just an average kind of utility monopoly instead of motherfucking PG&E. Speaking of which,  a while back they inquired about how much it would cost to advertise some PR campaign on this tiny blog. I was like GTFO – I ignored it. Interestingly, presented with a similar offer, the San Francisco Bay Guardian said bring it, and so then PGE’s signature blue banner ads started appearing at SFBG.com, I’m seriously. Ah memories. )

Anyway, see you at Sunday Streets Western Addition 2012.

*I’m sure he’d be delighted to have her on board. Now, she’s a little PO’ed these days about how she kind of got screwed over by Interim Mayor Ed Lee earlier this year, oh and by Willie Brown and Rose Pak and all, but  I’m sure Mayor Lee and his minders would adapt to London’s election swimmingly. (Of course Ed Lie said he would stay out of this particular race and of course now he’s now picking sides in D5, you know, just a few months later, but he also said he wouldn’t run for Mayor. In fact that’s why he became Interim Mayor, based on that other promise. Hence the sobriquet Ed Lie.) Anyway, Republican billionaire Ron Conway threw her a few bucks a little while ago – that’s telling, IMO. Oh, and DiFi just endorsed her, and you can’t get any more Establishment than DiFi I don’t think.

Well, It Looks Like We Have Some Actual Campaigning for District Five Supervisor: Julian Davis Has the Mo

Ooh, now let’s check in with weak-willed “Progressive” Christina Olague. Here’s her campaign.

I’ll tell you, if you like Ed Lee’s neo stop-and-frisk policy for the SFPD, then you should vote for Christina Olague, cause, you know, she worked hard to ensure that voters would choose Ed Lee over Supervisor John Avalos in the last mayoral election.

Oh, and here’s her most recent vote of no confidence. Per Samson Wong of AsianWeek:

“EMPRESS HAS NO CLOTHES: Some overconfidence in District 5 Supervisor Christina Olague’s campaign before last week’s August 15 SF Democratic Party county committee endorsement vote. Only days before, Bill Barnes, veteran campaign manager, government staffer and former District 5 candidate himself, came in to corral votes for the supervisor representing Japantown, Haight-Ashbury and Western Addition. One strategic error made – assuming an inflated head count that Olague would snag the important SF Democratic Party endorsement. In reality, no consensus had developed for Olague and her rivals - London Breed of the African American Arts and Culture Complex, Julian Davis of the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center or College Board member John Rizzo. The outcome – a public embarrassment for Olague, the Mayor Ed Lee appointee…”

Or London Breed, that’s the other choice for Ed Lee fans in D5, believe it or not. (She has the support of Republican billionaire Ron Conway, so that’s your big fat clue regarding how she rolls.)

Choose or lose, D5.

Shadowy “PROSF” Association Leader Hosts Meeting with Christina Olague Last Month, Gets Repaved Block This Month

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

This here is the flyer posted on a street in the “West Panhandle” area last month by the more-or-less anti-SF “PRO-SF” Homeowners Association.

Well, a slightly modified, Run Ed Run version – don’t click to expand

And this here is this month, on the same block, the very short block where the leader of PRO-SF, a Helen Lovejoy type, a person who worked against the harmless, SFPD-supported Panhandle Bandshell music project back a half-decade ago just happens to reside.

You see that? A quick repaving job, just for one block, just ten weeks before the District Five Supervisor election:

Now, are other blocks getting repaved? Yes, occasionally. But not anywhere close to here. And now the DPW pavers are gone. poof. Who knows when they will return. Next year, next decade? And hey, was this block so bad to begin with? Nope.

Is this process of where to pave when, you know, highly politicized? Yes, pretty much – it’s the same with the SFMTA and other agencies.

Is there a connection between the location of the real estate of a single fussbudget and where DPW decides to repave this week this month this year? I don’t know.

But other Chicago-style, Blagojevichy stuff goes on about town, so why not this too?

Hey District Five! If You Voted for John Avalos for Mayor, then You Shouldn’t Vote for Christina Olague – Here’s Why

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

This here is the Google Maps StreetView view of where District 5 Supervisor Candidate Julian Davis was living* last year.

Do you see the signs for John AVALOS for Mayor? They’re all over the place:

Hey, didn’t D5 go for Avalos over Ed Lie** two to one? I think so.

Hey, didn’t Christina Olague actively support Ed Lie OVER John Avalos, the second-place finisher?

So how can she say she’s a “progressive?” She’s a Progressive Sellout, sure, but not a progressive, not anymore, not if you start off as a Green Party member and then go Democrat and then cross the aisle and work for the San Francisco Repulican Party’s choice for Mayor for the sole reason of getting appointed as District Five Supervisor after Ross Mirkarimi won the Sheriff’s race?

Hey Christina, is Ed Lee a progressive too? Oh really? Then what do you call John Avalos?

Hey Christina, if you’re a progressive, then why don’t any progressives endorse you? You ever think about that? Have you seen this one:

District 5 supervisorial candidate Julian Davis is emerging as the progressive standard-bearer in that competitive race after today receiving the endorsements of a trio of top progressive politicians: Sups. John Avalos and David Campos and attorney Matt Gonzalez, the former board president, mayoral candidate, and D5 supervisor.”

So, yes Christina, you’re more progressive than London Breed, the other person Mayor Ed Lie considered appointing. But he appointed you for a reason. He appointed you to vote as you please on whatever small, picayune issues that you want, but to vote with him on the votes that he really cares about.

That’s what makes you a sellout. You’re using your sort of hippy-dippy background to try to fool the voters of D5.

Oh well.

*I thought that this address might be his HQ and I wanted to see if the building was residential or commercial. Turns out that his HQ isn’t around yet but it will open up at 10AM this Saturday in the Lower Haight area, possibly at the location of the former Vapor Room, anyway, somewhere around there.

**Everything that man says is a lie. He doesn’t know how not to lie anymore. Check it. “Quite candidly…?” “Quite frankly…?” That’s what he says right before he tells another whopper.
