I know, why don’t you take out all these spaces and replace them with a separated bike lane or something, SFMTA?

After all, Transit First, right?

Oh, what’s that? These are the spaces that the Board of Supervisors and their aides park in for free every day so that’s where you just happened to end your campaign of completion?

But don’t you care about safety, SFMTA?

Mmmmm….

“This project seeks to implement aesthetic and safety improvements for all users of Polk Street between McAllister and Union Streets. In accordance with the City’s Transit First policy, improvements will primarily be focused on people who walk, use transit and ride a bicycle along Polk Street. The project is funded by Proposition B General Obligation Bonds and is part of an overall citywide effort to curb pedestrian and bicycle collisions and to provide a safe north-south connection for people on bicycles. Pedestrian and bicyclist collision and injury data on Polk Street point to a corridor in need of safety improvements for all those who share the road. In fact, the southern portion from Sacramento to McAllister Streets is part of the 5% of San Francisco streets that have more than half of the City’s most severe pedestrian collisions.”

WELL, THAT’S YOUR OPINION, ISN’T IT, WILLIE? HEY, HOW’S IT GOING WITH RENAMING 3RD STREET “WILLIE L BROWN, JR BOULEVARD” THE WAY YOU SO DESPERATELY WAN?. YOU KNOW, LIKE THIS:

OH, WHAT’S THAT? YOUR IDEA “BOMBED?”

WELL GEE, WHY WAS THAT? WAS IT DUE TO HOMOPHOBIA? NO. SEXISM? NO. RACISM? HEY THAT MUST BE IT, RIGHT? ALL RIGHT, GO ON, WILLIE.

If it makes the ballot and loses, it will be a disservice to Harvey’s memory.

It will only create divisions within the city. Not because Milk was gay, but because renaming the airport after him makes no sense.

WELL, I DON’T KNOW. IT CERTAINLY WOULD MAKE SOME SENSE. THE QUESTION IS ABOUT WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS.

Moscone Center is named after Mayor George Moscone because he negotiated the deal with various factions to get the place built, and a lot of low-income housing along with it.

WELL THAT WASN’T A GOOD IDEA NOW WAS IT? PERHAPS WE SHOULDN’T NAME ANYTHING AFTER POLITICIANS? AND WHY IS JFK AIRPORT NAMED AFTER JFK?

Harvey had no relationship with the airport. What Campos is doing is trying to heighten Milk’s symbolic stature as the liberator of gays.

WELL, IS THAT A CRIME?

It’s a mistake, and I hope enough gay leaders say so before this splits the town.

NO, WHAT YOU HOPE FOR IS THE WILLIE L BROWN JR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. WHY DON’T YOU JUST COME OUT AND SAY IT?

The real cost of renaming SFO for Harvey Milk would be the losing the equity of the highly-recognized SFO “brand.”

What’s it worth? IDK, but it’s on a par with the annual budget of the City and County of San Francisco.

SFO is a “world-class” IATA code, right up there with LAX and JFK, right?

Also, what if we kick-off an SFO renaming campaign for Harvey and the process gets hijacked by San Francisco Shadow Mayor Willie L Brown Jr.?

You know he wants something like that, right?

Real bad.

Just saying.

PS: Oh, and what would the new IATA code be? MLK? Well, that code is already taken, by someplace in Montana. And also, well, MLK, just don’t go there, girlfriend. If you wanted to say something like “SFO, An International Airport from Harvey Milk” or something like that, the damage would be lessened.

Wow. A supposed “leader” of the Run Ed Run Draft Ed Lee for Mayor movement, a person who was rewarded with a Supervisor position for selling out her progressive values, just got a big fat vote of NO CONFIDENCE last night, courtesy of the Democratic Party of San Francisco.

Though comprehensive official minutes of the DCCC’s special meeting at California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium will be forthcoming, member and committee reports included several updates on: the upcoming fall campaign; the hiring of a new executive director; current party finances and fundraising plans, including an event centered on President Obama’s nomination acceptance speech; voter registration; the redesigned party website and expanded communications efforts; and amending practices to meet many standards codified in the Brown Act and S.F. Sunshine Ordinance.  The DCCC also voted on a vendor for its fall slate card program.  

Public comments included numerous speakers advocating individually and on their organizations’ behalf for local candidates and measures; a monthly update on Organizing for America; concerns that the California Democratic Party endorsed Proposition 35 without consideration to official opponents and concerns from the sex worker community.  Two speakers called on DCCC members to address themselves to community concerns that policies governing the Castro’s Rainbow Flag do not comport with Presidential proclamations and other exigencies that merit lowering the flag to half-mast when appropriate.  

The lone new business item was a resolution passed by a majority of DCCC members that condemned inflammatory and offensive anti-Muslim advertising on Muni vehicles, and called on city officials and MTA authorities to change policies to prohibit such hate speech in the future.

Members John Rizzo and Hene Kelly closed the meeting by memorializing the late Milton Marks III, a highly regarded Community College Board member and former DCCC colleague, who passed away Aug. 9 at the age of 52.  The meeting was adjourned in Marks’s honor.

So how can she say she’s a “progressive?” She’s a Progressive Sellout, sure, but not a progressive, not anymore, not if you start off as a Green Party member and then go Democrat and then cross the aisle and work for the San Francisco Repulican Party’s choice for Mayor for the sole reason of getting appointed as District Five Supervisor after Ross Mirkarimi won the Sheriff’s race?

Hey Christina, is Ed Lee a progressive too? Oh really? Then what do you call John Avalos?

Hey Christina, if you’re a progressive, then why don’t any progressives endorse you? You ever think about that? Have you seen this one:

District 5 supervisorial candidate Julian Davis is emerging as the progressive standard-bearer in that competitive race after today receiving the endorsements of a trio of top progressive politicians: Sups. John Avalos and David Campos and attorney Matt Gonzalez, the former board president, mayoral candidate, and D5 supervisor.” 

So, yes Christina, you’re more progressive than London Breed, the other person Mayor Ed Lie considered appointing. But he appointed you for a reason. He appointed you to vote as you please on whatever small, picayune issues that you want, but to vote with him on the votes that he really cares about.

That’s what makes you a sellout. You’re using your sort of hippy-dippy background to try to fool the voters of D5.

Oh well.

*I thought that this address might be his HQ and I wanted to see if the building was residential or commercial. Turns out that his HQ isn’t around yet but it will open up at 10AM this Saturday in the Lower Haight area, possibly at the location of the former Vapor Room, anyway, somewhere around there.

SAN FRANCISCO (July 27, 2012) — California Democratic Party Chair John Burton administered the oath of office to the newly elected members of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee Wednesday night at the first general meeting of the local Democratic Party’s governing board following the June 5th Primary Election.  

Veteran Democratic activist Mary Jung was unanimously elected to serve as the San Francisco Democratic Party’s chair, and several DCCC members were elected to fill leadership roles that will be critical to the local party’s success heading into the November 2012 General Election.  Top priorities discussed at the public meeting include re-electing President Obama, returning the Speakership to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi by helping reclaim a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and pushing to expand the number of Democratic voters citywide.

Why is McDonalds Charging Sales Tax on Donations? Anyway, the New San Francisco Happy Meal is Exactly the Same as the Old

Well here it is, the before and after of the San Francisco Happy Meal from McDonalds.

Today’s the day that the San Francisco’s Healthy Meal Incentives Ordinance kicks in. The upshot is that now you have to donate 10 cents to Ronald McDonald House in order to get the toy.

But uh oh, is Micky Dee’s charging sales tax on the donation? Yes it is. I cry foul.* (Uh, San Francisco McDonaldses, can you do that? Do you need to rejigger your registers?)

This sign was just put up. It’s all “10 cents adds a toy.”

Now I’ll tell you, I can recall buying a Hamburger Happy Meal in Palo Alto last year for exactly two-fitty ($2.50). It had more fries plus the free toy (but it didn’t have apple slices or a slice of cheese for the burger.) Anyway, prices be going up, it seems.

Oh well.

*So, the only reason to charge sales tax is if the 10-cent purported “donation” is actually for the “retail sale of tangible personal property,” right? So which is it, a donation or a sale? I mean if I donated money to Ronald McDonald House on Scott Street, they sure as Hell wouldn’t tack on sales tax, would they? Mmmm… I paid ten cents extra to get a toy, right? Thinking out loud here, could it be that, as far as San Francisco is concerned, the 10 cents shows that the toy isn’t included “for free” and therefore the sale need not comply with the HMIO, but as far as the state of California is concerned, McD’s is just selling the toy for 10 cents, so therefore, obviously, a penny needs to be collected and forwarded to Sacramento for each sale? (But of course, if you walk up and offer your 10-cent donation for just the toy, they’ll say, “No dice.” They used to charge $2 for toy only purchases). Have the legal advisers for area McDonalds restaurants thought this through? I don’t know. Anyway, the approach they’re taking appears to be a giant F.U. to the City and County of San Francisco. I’ll tell you, the path they’re on is full of rusty nails and garbage pails. Just saying. But hey, what about McDonalds Corporation in Oak Brook, Illinois? Did they sign off on this? I wonder. (Did they indemnify the local owners? By contract, or, you know, some other way. I’m just curious about who came up with this ten cent idea.) Anyway, this is me thinking aloud, just raising issues. I can’t wrap my head around “ten cents adds a toy” and how that relates to state tax law. Like when I got my Android phone plus two-year contract for $50, I had to pay another $50 or so in sales tax because the phone is worth far more than $50. For example…

Well here’s the news from last week:

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced the recipients of the 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants, totaling nearly $96 million. Twenty-seven communities and organizations will receive Community Challenge grants and 29 regional areas will receive Regional Planning grants. The goal of HUD’s Sustainable Communities grants is to help communities and regions improve their economic competitiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.”

Our San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission scored $5,000,000 worth of these grants, so some feds dropped by to celebrate this afternoon.

Here’s what John Avalos has to say about health care:

“As Mayor, I will create a task force of experts to help me keep Healthy San Francisco strong and viable to serve individuals who are left out of health reform, especially our immigrant residents. We must stand up to profit-driven corporations and their lobbyists to finally close the loopholes in Healthy SF. I will also make sure sure the employer spending requirement of the Health Care Security Ordinance is not adversely affected by the Federal Health Reform.”

Here’s Mayor Ed Lee’s downtown-oriented proposal:

“MAYOR LEE INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE ACCESS & PROTECT JOBS

San Francisco, CA—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today introduced legislation at the Board of Supervisors to close a loophole in San Francisco’s Health Care Security Ordinance (HSCO). The legislation preserves the City’s groundbreaking universal health care access and protects jobs.

“This legislation begins to close a loophole and lays out a framework that honors our commitment to health care access for all while protecting jobs in our City’s small businesses,” said Mayor Lee. “I thank Supervisor David Campos for identifying this loophole and President David Chiu for working on a solution. I know we can all work together to achieve the same bottom-line objective; providing universal health care access and protecting jobs in our City. I look forward to working in partnership with Supervisor Campos, Supervisor Chiu, and all members of the Board in crafting a viable solution.”

Mayor Lee’s legislation provides more health care access while protecting jobs in the City’s small businesses. The legislation will address the loophole in employer deposits into workers’ Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA). Workers with an HRA are able to draw down the funds in those accounts for a range of health care expenses from reimbursement for health services to payment for health insurance premiums to buying into our Healthy San Francisco program.

Mayor Lee’s plan focuses on increasing the accessibility of HRA funds to reimburse privately purchased insurance or to pay for participation in Healthy San Francisco. Mayor Lee has secured commitments from the business community to communicate with their members about the importance of making these types of expenses eligible under individual businesses’ HRA plans. Additionally, Mayor Lee’s plan includes a robust data-gathering effort through the Office of Labor Standards Enforcement to determine how widespread the problem is, and therefore to best tailor a policy solution. By increasing access to health coverage options we ensure that San Francisco workers can more fully exercise the benefit provided them under the HSCO.

Mayor Lee considered the impact to City small businesses and its likelihood of costing employees their jobs while ensuring that businesses comply with the HCSO. Unlike other approaches which the Controller reports could eliminate nearly 500 jobs, this legislation strikes a balance that closes the loophole, provides health care to everyone, protects jobs, and grows the City’s economy.

Mayor Lee will continue to work with all parties – from workers, organized labor, small business owners, Department of Public Health, and the City’s elected leaders – to find the appropriate solution on this important public policy challenge to close the loophole.”
