San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Democratic Club is hosting a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Town Hall tonight at the LGBT Center on the corner of Market and Octavia. CCA is:
“a system adopted into law in the states of Massachusetts, Ohio, California, New Jersey and Rhode Island which allows cities and counties to aggregate the buying power of individual customerswithin a defined jurisdiction in order to secure alternative energy supply contracts. Currently, nearly 1 million Americans receive service from CCAs.”
The special guests will be Assembly Bill 117 (2002) author Carole Migden, District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, District 9 Supervisor David Campos and San Francisco Bay Guardian Executive Editor Tim Redmond.

San Francisco Supervisors David Campos, David Chiu, John Avalos and Eric Mar all addressed members of the Harvey Milk Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club the other night at the LGBT Center on Market Street.
The freshmen emphasised the importance of adding progressive women to their group, and they just might get that from Districts 6 and 10 after the November elections next year.

Profoundly nativist, certainly. Racist? Well, as always, You Make The Call. (I mean, the bulk of the people we’re talking about here aren’t coming from Europe, that’s for sure.) A vote on this matter is on the agenda and CAPS is trying to pack the chambers with their supporters right now - we’ll just have to bide our time to see how this one turns out.

“San Francisco Supervisors Play ‘Race Card’ in Response to TV Spot Linking Population Growth and Environmental Degradation
Supervisors’ Position is at Odds with Legendary Environmentalists, Including Gaylord Nelson and David Brower
San Francisco Board of Supervisors members Eric Mar and David Campos are attacking a Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS) ad campaign connecting population growth to environmental degradation. Mar and Campos have scheduled time for the Board of Supervisors to consider a measure condemning the ads today, Tuesday November 10th. CAPS will deliver the latest research regarding population growth and its effects on our environment to the Board of Supervisors prior to the meeting.
Mar and Campos’ position is at odds with a plethora of research and a long list of legendary environmentalists including the founder of Earth Day, Gaylord Nelson and the Sierra Club’s first Executive Director, David Brower. “Often, when someone doesn’t have the facts on their side, they resort to name calling,” explained Diana Hull, Executive Director of CAPS. “Obviously, this is an emotional issue for Mr. Mar and Mr. Campos but as community leaders, they should know better. In America, we welcome all viewpoints.”
The ad campaign makes the point that the number one factor driving U.S. population growth is immigration. Further, when immigrants come to America, their carbon footprint expands to four times what it was in their home countries. The ads suggest that curbing immigration isn’t the solution to global warming but it’s a start.
Along with many highly respected environmentalists, both Gaylord Nelson and David Brower highlighted immigration-driven population growth as a major factor affecting our environment. The 2008 CIS study on which CAPS’ ads are based is the latest in a litany of research reinforcing the common sense conclusion that population growth affects our environment. CAPS’ calls to Mr. Mar’s and Mr. Campos’ offices to introduce them to the research and the facts went unreturned.
“There are many daunting issues facing California and the San Francisco area, so I’m surprised that Mr. Mar and Mr. Campos see this as the best use of taxpayer time,” commented Hull. “With 12% unemployment and families having trouble putting food on the table, it seems like job creation would be a better use of the Board of Supervisors time.”
This attack on the ads comes just hours before the campaign is scheduled to conclude. However, based on the positive feedback CAPS received from San Francisco residents, Hull is considering bringing the ads back to the San Francisco area.

Look out NIMBY’s - the San Francisco Bicycle Plan is coming to YOUR neighborhood, whether you like it or not. That’s the conclusion you’d come to had you made it this morning’s Bike to Work Day rally on the steps of City Hall. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition put on quite a show for a couple hundred-something in the crowd, most of whom parked their colorful bikes thusly:

SFBC Executive Director Leah Shahum MC’ed the rally, speaking of NIMBYs and the Bicycle Plan. The battle is joined, or it will be starting next month, probably. Get up to speed with the 2008 San Francisco State of Cycling Report put out by the SFMTA.
Lots of Supes were there:
District 1 Supervisor Eric Mar briefly addressed the crowd, talking about improving cyclist safety, mentioning the lower Haight Wiggle he uses to get back and forth from the Richmond District.
District 3 Supervisor and Board President Davis Chiu doesn’t think changes should stop with the proposed Bike Plan. He wants to Go Further. Lots of cheers for that.
District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu showed off her fashionable fuzzy white helmet to the delight of the crowd.
District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi always makes these events - he hasn’t really gotten much sleep since the recent birth of Theo Aureliano Mirkarimi.
District 8 Supervisor Bevan Dufty cited recent changes to the streetscape, including Pavement to Parks.
District 9 Supervisor David Campos was pleased to see the outreach to people living in the Mission.
District 11 Supervisor John Avalos gave a shout out to District 6 Supervisor Chris Daly. He also said, “Bikes Rule.”

It was standing room only last night in front of the California State Building in San Francisco as members of the press assembled to hear details of the plan to allow for more oversight of the BART Police.
Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and Senator Leland Yee said they consulted with public safety expert San Francisco Supervisor David Campos in order to craft new state legislation.
