Good-Bye William R. De Avila Elementary, Now It’s “CHINESE IMMERSION SCHOOL, CHINESE IMMERSION SCHOOL, CHINESE IMMERSION SCHOOL”

You know, back in the aughts, I was thinking that De Avila Elementary / Dudley Stone School was going to keep its name after it reopened to become a Chinese-language immersion school. But no, the name of this place, if you had to say it in just three words, is “CHINESE IMMERSION SCHOOL.”

It looks like a private school, non?

Now mostly, they prefer to teach Cantonese, as opposed to Mandarin.

The answer to WHY’S THAT has to do with local politics.

OTOH, if you want to get all nuanced, then:

Why Cantonese First?

I can think of a few other reasons, but anyway…

So there’s your branding, and now I know why nobody understands when I mention the de Avila school…

Brandi Chastain Graces de Avila Elementary: National PTA + Jamba Juice = ?

Well, it was on this morning at William de Avila Elementary School on Haight Street, where the Chinese language immersion students got to drink fruit smoothies from Bananaman and also got to meet soccer heroine Brandi Chastain. It all had to do with the National Parent Teachers Association‘s Healthy Lifestyles Month. All the deets below.

Parents, including knuckle-knocking DCCC member Tom Hsieh, Jr. (Mayor Gavin Newsom’s friend, camera left), were encouraged by Brandi Chastain to get up and start jumping around, to the delight of the students:

Mayor Gavin Newsom Opens New Chinese Language Immersion School in Haight-Ashbury

This was the mise en scene today at San Francisco’s brand new Cantonese dual language immersion school on Haight Street.

It’s called the Chinese Immersion School at De Avila.
