NoPA Western Addition Millionaires Pressure the SFMTA for Restricted Street Parking – Cost Will be $100-Something per Year

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

camden avery of uppercasing, the haight street blog, has the deets.

Here’s the proposal for a new residential parking permit area:

Of course, the richers of Alamo Squar-ah won’t be paying for parking per se, ’cause parking is free. No no, they’ll be paying to prevent other people from parking in “their” hood – that’s the way you gotta look at it. Who knows how many more Parking Control Officers the SFMTA will be able to bill to the RPP program after this.

And who knows when a simple permit sticker will cost drivers more than $200 per year. I’m thinking by the year 2020 it will be that high.

Anyway, enjoy your NIMBY paradise, NIMBYs!

Why is It That the 99% Pays the CA DMV for Auto Registration But the 1% Ferrari Lambo Crowd Doesn’t?

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Here’s the 99% in Lane 2 – no apparent problems here:

And here’s what’s in Lane 1 a few miles down the very same freeway  - it’s YAFWR (Yet Another Ferraro Without Registration):

Do you know why the richers of California tend to go without license plates on their Ferrari and Lamborghini and whatnot? Well, it’s because of the cost.

Buying a Ferraro like this one to tool around on the weekends for a little while will run you $20-something thousand in “use tax” whether you drive it a little or a lot. So what you’ll need to do is to make some arrangement with your cheesy exoticar dealer – if you think about it for a while, you’ll figure something out.*

And the Tax Man prolly won’t catch you.

So that’s why the 99% pays the CA DMV for auto registration and the 1% Ferrari / Lambo crowd does not.

*Oh, it’s a race car, not a regular car. Oh, as soon as I bought it I took it to, let’s see here, Nevada? Yeah, Nevada. As a 1%-er, I live in the crappy, windblown, high desert of Nevada instead of gorgeous California – do you buy that? Oh, that was a repositioning trip, and, you know, I hated it. I don’t actually like the job of ferrying Ferrari about, it’s such a burden. Oh, it’s…

Nevada’s a really good state to pick, probably the best one. But don’t forget about Oregon – it has its charms as well!

But Maine? That’s a little crazy, hombre:

Pilot Looks Right While Co-Pilot Looks Left – That’s Proper Crew Resource Management When Approaching Van Ness

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

I guess these red Co-Pilot decals* are the updated versions of those BABY ON BOARD! signs of yesteryear.

“Despite waning in popularity, the signs have entered the American lexicon. In 1993, The Simpsons episode “Homer’s Barbershop Quartet” featured a barbershop quartet tune called “Baby On Board“. The song was written by Homer Simpson in a flashback to 1985 when Marge bought a sign, hoping it would stop people “intentionally ramming our car.”

Crew Resource Management requires an ability to judge distance. The airplane flies high…turns left, looks right:

I really don’t wanna look stupid when I’m sleeping
I never really liked sunny days
The black wings just reach out to me over a distance…
And I can feel the wind from the wings
I see the clouds, I feel the ocean with my feet, and I’m home again
It requires an ability to judge distance
The airplane flies high…turns left, looks right

*Our Noe Valley SF helpfully points out that the stickers come with when you buy this model carrier from the Rhode Gear. That would explain it then.
